Today I get to share with you one of my favorite weddings in the whole world. I love it as much as I do because it reminds me of these magic garden parties I used to throw in the backyard when I was just 16. I’d spread picnic blankets on the ground, put fairy lights in the trees, and make a cake topped with real roses coated in sugar. Then I’d invite all my best (drama) friends over, and serve tea and eat cake at twilight. They were the best parties in the whole world.
This wedding casts the same magical spell. It’s a simple backyard wedding transformed into something otherworldly by flowers and fairy curtains strung in trees…. and by love and community and commitment.
I’m really excited to bring you Eileen and Matthew’s delectable garden wedding today, as shot by one of my favorite wedding photographers Heather Glison of One Love Photo. Heather shot this wedding five years ago, all on film, and she tracked down and scanned all of the film so I could share this wedding with you today…. which makes it extra magical I think…
Eileen and Matthew got married in the backyard of the home they bought three months before the wedding on Bainbridge Island. The man who sold them the house picked them over all the other offers he got, because they he loved that they planned to hold their wedding there. Now, five years later, they still live in the same house with their daughter Violet.
Eileen’s dress was designed by a dear friend Lisa Defrance and has feathers (mmmmm) on one of the sleeves.
They were struggling finding the right tulle for the veil, and they ended up ordering vintage fabric from France via ebay. The netting on her veil turned into a wrap for the evening (smartsmartsmart) .
All of the flowers were done by another friend, the fantastic Laurie Cinatto who now blogs about crafts ever week at Once Wed.
Yes, yes, you’re thinking… but tell me more about her amazing flower tree, I clearly need a flower tree! The flower tree was made with flowers and ribbon and love (also by Laurie), and you can do it in your backyard too.
Lounging, picnicking, puppies… doesn’t this look like a wedding you would like to be at?
And with that, I’m just going to let the photos tell the story. It’s a story I could read a thousand times. Honest, real, lovely, and quite possibly proving once and for all that their are faeries at the bottom of the garden….

Somehow this wedding whispers it’s own sweet story of love, its laughter carrying on the breeze. What more do you need when you have each other and those that you love?
To see more of Heather’s dreamy and evocative work head over to One Love Photo. I really can’t say enough kind things about Heather’s and her husband John’s photographs or about how kind and down to earth they are, so go see for yourself.

I am bawling. my. eyes. out.
Fairies? Feathers? A FLOWER TREE and a picnic?!
And *please* when we are neighbors in real life can we have fairy parties at twilight sometimes? And bring all of our children? And can we twirl in circles with our arms spread out?

That photo of the little girl in Peter Pan collar and pixieish haircut could have been taken any time in the past 50 years. Are you sure she was human not fairy herself?

I’m agnosic on the fairy/human debate with regard to the little one. Anyone’s guess, really.

I LOVE the idea of the flower tree– how cool would it be to create something like that to put the seating chart on? Pin the names between the flowers… Perhaps a lot of work, but would be so amanzing!
