Just some background – Patrick and I dated for 7 years before we got married and we lived together for 6 months. Like Meg says, I was surprised by how much we had to talk about. There were no great surprises uncovered, but the meetings and the designated time to talk through things were very important for us.

Oh I don't know A. I've got to differ. It's not what it sounds like. It's not working through your "issues" it's talking about the real stuff (like do you have your living will notarized?). David and I have been friends for 14 years, and together for 5, and it was the BEST thing we did hands down.

I'll post more on it at some point.

To the anonymous poster who said that "every engaged couple should go thru counseling" - I have to disagree with this. Not every couple needs it - it's a really personal decision to seek counseling.

My future-mister and I have been together 8 years... if we don't have it figured out by now... well, you know the rest.

So while I do think counseling can be beneficial for couples that have only been engaged a short while or even a year or two, I don't think it is "necessary" to start your marriage off on the right path.

Just my friendly .02. ;)

Thanks for that bit of encouragement. That's what I'm working on with my own wedding & it's so helpful to see that others have succeeded.
