Porn For The Bride (yuck).

Well. It’s been a big week and APW. Good. Long. Kind of emotional for me (I still miss the old site a little bit, is that strange?) And next week, I’m considering, you know, actually WRITING something new. Maybe even writing some thoughts about marriage that will let you guys try out the new comment flagging system (because you know someone is going to throw up crazy on the screen). So, I thought I’d take us out on this, awesome note:

Porn For The Bride (yuck). | A Practical Wedding

Oh commenters, bless your souls. Remember when I was b*tching aboutPorn For The Bride‘ (vomit)? This from xkcd. (Thanks Caitlin)

And with that… have a cocktail on me, please. You guys are the best.

A student gifted me that book one Christmas. She worked at a book store and they had a surplus of random books that were headed for the garbage. I couldn’t tell if she was just randomly handing books to people so they wouldn’t go to waste or if she really thought I would dig it. But it was wrapped…. with my name on it…. HEY, WAIT A MINUTE!

  • Theresa

I love that it implies we’re so materialistic that we want $1000 shoes over the marriage. Oh yeah, I forgot that I got married for the KitchenAid mixer and the new dishes. *pppppsssssht* Jerks.

  • Alyssa

oh xkcd why must you continue to indulge my every whim with constant hilarity regarding math and love… http://www.xkcd.com/55/ is hanging in my cube at work. often i believe it reminds all the guys I work with that i actually am a girl :)
have a lovely weekend, and i hope that multiple Friday posts become a staple on the new site. <3 it.

  • ddayporter

    bahahaaha love it.

I think someone already said this, maybe cate subrosa, but APW has really been on fire this week! I hope you are as proud as we all are of this site’s transformation. you could easily have taken it easy this week, since we’re all plenty occupied exploring this new site, but you really took it up a notch and churned out some of the best content yet. hope you take it easy this weekend! looking forward to trying out this flagging concept… bring on the Meg sass.

      Working on being proud… ;)

  • Agirl

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Why have I never seen this comic before? (Clearly, because I don’t read the comments closely enough…) My life is now complete.

(And THIS is why, despite never really wanting to think about planning a wedding ever again, I will never stop reading this blog.)

Things that I look at and have non-sexual fantasies about:

    -The Ikea catalog
-Travel books, for pretty much everywhere
    -Crate & Barrel catalog
    -Williams-Sonoma
    -Pottery Barn
-The Apple store, and all their shiny shiny gadgets
-Banana Republic and Ann Taylor (it turns out I like really, really preppy dresses, which if you knew me in high school would confuse the hell out of you)
-Any and all cookbooks with giant color photos of the food. I will sit there and read cookbooks and drool.
-The Beast’s library in the Disney “Beauty and the Beast.”

Why? Because I like cooking awesome food with shiny kitchen gadgets, I like playing with shiny electronic gadgets, I like clean modern furniture and neat storage ideas, I like pretty clothes that I can’t afford, I want to go everywhere and see everything (and eat delicious food everywhere), and I want all the books in the world.

Things that leave me totally cold: Imagining my fiancé telling me to spend $5000 on a cake. I simply have no desire to do that in the first place. I like cake as much as anyone else, but the best cake I’ve ever had still did not cost anything like that much.

This is, of course, totally leaving out the entire rant about how women only ever have non-sexual fantasies, because of course we couldn’t have sexual ones, that would be bad. I’m not going to share TMI here, but you guys can trust that I do think about other things sometimes than the ones I named above…

Carrie, I have many of the same (non-sexual) fantasies for many of the same reasons (good food while travelling? yes, please!), but this one especially:
“-Banana Republic and Ann Taylor (it turns out I like really, really preppy dresses, which if you knew me in high school would confuse the hell out of you)”
made me giggle because the same is so very true re: “if you knew me in high school”.

I have to ditto agirl for the second time this week. That comic is hilarious. And I don’t want to plan another wedding, ever, either, but you, Meg, are just irresistible. I love the sass and the honesty, so I keep coming back.

  • Marty

Oh man, they did the Porn For Women-type nonsense on 30 Rock a few weeks ago. I was pretty peeved.

My mental life is not so boring that my sexual fantasies involve my fiance doing the dishes, thank you very much.

    Love the comic- thanks!

I know what you mean about missing the old APW a little bit….it felt rogue and subversive a little….but I think you’re doing a kick ass job with this whole site. Congrats!

    • meg

Hopefully we can make this site still rouge. I thought about that a LOT when we were making it.

  • Nina

    Awesome.

    Here’s my favourite: http://xkcd.com/724/

<3 this. Excellent start to the weekend, have a good one.

  • MegsDad

I, of course, like xkcd.com/263/. And the Warning at the bottom of the page appeals to my mean streak.

    • http://www.twitter.com/kahlia kahlia

Meg’s Dad, that one’s great! And about the “advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)” in the warning, I just have to say: ok, yeah, some of them totally go over my head, but I can speak 3 foreign languages (in addition to having translated entire repair and installation manuals for wind turbines), so ha! ;)

  • Caitlin

Oh Meg, you’re a darling. I’m glad so many people here love xkcd as well. And congrats to you Meg on the redesign!

  • Tarynne

    Meg…
I’m sorry. I really miss the old site. I know, I know… I didn’t say anything for the first while, hoping I would get used to it… But the old blog just had a heart, in a scrappy, scrubby way, you know? I know you worked so hard on the style of this… so I feel really bad saying so… but this just looks a bit too commercial for me.

    • meg

You should have seen how the first designs looked. We worked for a month just trying to make it look as personal as we could, while still looking professional. This was the best compromise we could come up with. The bottom line is this project takes, ohhh, 20 plus hours a week (and really needs 40), and I have to get paid to do it, as a one earner household. So, it helps to have the site look more professional, and that’s just how it is, like it or not (and I don’t always like it).

That said, while I also miss the old site, this one has the same heart. NOTHING has changed. Posts are still the same, ads are still the same, everything the same. So. We’ll all get used to the way it looks. Honestly? It facilitates discussions about 100x better, and that’s where the soul really lies.

    • meg

Erg. And I should add… remember when blogger took down my blog? Yeah. I knew it was at risk of disappearing FOREVER… and the back end was just unworkable. So. It kind of had to happen, and I just had to do my best.

      • Molly

Just for balance, I’ll tell you that I looooove the new site. Love. It. The main descriptor I would use is not “professional,” it’s “usable.” And as an information professional, I have to tell you, that’s a huge compliment. I can find things! And when I go wandering around into the depths of the site, I still know where I am! And all your wonderful posts are readable and accessible and I can make the font bigger without breaking everything! I loved the content at the old site but could never really get lost there because it wasn’t set up to browse deeply. This one is. There are many entry points to older posts, to related posts, to advertisers. The old site may have been scrappy but the new site is friendly, and I think it’s a tremendous improvement. A million times yay!

  • Ashley

I love love love this site!! Love the design, love the colors, love the comment section, love EVERYTHING! You are amazing. You have dedicated so much time and effort into this site, and it shows. It is more user friendly from our side, and apparently from your as well. The heart is all here. Full of heart. Full of sass.
