So If you can believe it… and I have a hard time believing it… I was quoted in Glamour Magazine this month on, of all things, ugly bridesmaids dresses. I’m sure you’re not surprised that I said something along the lines of, “Your friend’s getting MARRIED for f*cks sake. Have a drink, toast her joy, and get over it (at least for the duration of the wedding). It’s not like anyone thinks that orange 80′s bubble dress reflects on your personal taste.” Except I didn’t swear. Because I’m very well behaved in mass media. And what they didn’t quote me on was my opinion that your friend is going to owe you a lot of very strong margaritas with very good tequila as soon as she comes to her post-wedding senses (and who doesn’t love tequila?)
And, as if that wasn’t enough, reader-of-the-week* Carly got APW mentioned by the Alaska Dispatch, which said nice things about the site, and you guys:
APW features thoughtful, well-written posts about all kinds of issues that might get lost in the excitement of planning a wedding — like what’s the difference between getting married and being married? What does it mean to be a wife, whether you’re in a heterosexual or same-sex union? How do you integrate the traditional institution of marriage with a contemporary feminist philosophy? Not only is the writing smart and engaging, the readers who comment are articulate and intelligent, and actual discussion (!) takes place in the comments. APW is a site I can see myself continuing to follow long after my dress has been hermetically sealed and put away for my unborn daughters to someday turn their noses up at when I offer it for their weddings.
So. For those of you keeping track, that means that David is getting his JD the same week as I got quoted in a major women’s magazine for the first time. Annnnndddddd….. the world feels like it’s spinning too fast this week for me to breathe it in, to get a grip, or just read all the amazing comments.
And what I mean to say is, posting is going to be a little slower for the rest of the week. I’m going to aim for posts that *don’t* get hundreds of smart thoughtful comments. You know. Just for fun.
Because my actual, real-life marriage is going through a big change this week, and I want to be there to pay attention (and celebrate my husband). I’ll be back next week with some amazing stuff, and some wedding graduates I’ve been waiting to post since SEPTEMBER. No joke. In the meantime, raise a glass to David, won’t you? I’ll see you then.
*And you know what you get as reader of the week? A margarita. Obviously.
(I know. Women in bikinis. What can I say?)
