APWs LAMBDA Legal Fundraising Drive | A Practical Wedding

I’m in New York, my bags are unpacked, and I’m getting ready to make Yay New York stellar. Elizabeth of Lowe House Events and I have been working ourselves into the ground for the last seven weeks making this happen, and right before we left we sat down to talk about why. In the end, there are two things that are deeply important to us: getting these two couples legally married, and raising money for LAMBDA Legal. We picked LAMBDA because their work doesn’t just support marriage equality, but spans impact litigation, public education, and advocacy for the LGBTQ population. They are working to make sure that we are all equal enough, and I think that’s some of the most important work of our time.

This week, we’re spearheading an APW fundraising drive for LAMBDA. We’re hoping that all of you, no matter where you are located, will kick in support for Yay New York by giving a donation. This weekend, the APW regional parties (updates on that soon), raised almost $1,000, and now we’re opening this up to the whole APW community. You can give directly to LAMBDA Legal through APW’s First Giving Page. We’ll be running this drive all week as we make this party happen. And at the end of the week, we’ll get to show you what you, as a community, have given and built. Here we go…

    *Feels guilty that she’s broke.*

Now I’ll go and find that shame-blaster. When I have a job, I’ll help. Until then, y’all are going to have to accept my prayers and love as the best donation I can give.

Pew! Pew! Pew! Shame = Blasted.
Non-financial support is just important, if not more so! Let me tell you what you can do for FREE – Talk to anyone and everyone, and tell them why it’s important the LGBTQ folks get all the same rights as everybody else. When you go to a wedding or fancy event, wear a white knot and explain what it stands for. Introduce your LGBT friends to all those family members who think they’ve never met one. As Harvey Milk said, “If they know us, they don’t vote against us.”

PEOPLE change minds. Money doesn’t – it simply allows some people to make this mind changing thing their full-time job, so it can happen faster.

Or give a dollar. I used to work in fundraising, and literally every dollar counts. It’s easy to think, “I’m too broke to help,” but if everyone who visited APW today, or read this on RSS gave a dollar, we’d more than double our goal.

Clicking over to donate right now, thank you for providing the link (I meant to donate something earlier but sometimes I just need that here-it-is-right-in-front-of-you-now-do-it link help). I am so sorry to miss this, especially because I am usually right here in NYC. Heading upstate for a long weekend visit with my parents on Thursday, I just couldn’t make it happen any other way. Have a wonderful time and congratulations on making this happen-from all of us who will be there in spirit!
