Ok you guys, BIG NEWS. Like, all caps big. On Thursday (1/26) between 2:40 and 3:00 pm, EST, I’ll be talking about the book on Talk of the Nation on NPR. Not only that, but you can call and tweet in to participate. I knowwwww! This is, in sum, the most exciting professional thing that has ever happened to me, the kid who grew up without a TV and with only NPR. Think of this as me bringing the book tour to you, wherever you are in the world.

Oh my gosh, I listen to NPR like it’s my job. Except that my actual job (stupid, actual job) will get in the way of listening live. Ah well, I’ll catch it soon enough after. How fun!

I am in the same boat. Though I do like my job, except when it gets in the way of NPR listening. Thank goodness for podcasts and NPR online. Once the story is up on their website, we’ll be able to click through and listen there.

2) This really isn’t related to NPR, but it does seem generally appropriate to the reclaiming wife side of APW. . . .

Outside of the context of Gingrich’s open (or not) marriage, the idea of taking marriage to mean what it needs to for you and your partner seems pretty reasonable. Marriage no longer ONLY means the wife stays home and cooks and cleans and raises babies, while the husband works from 9-5 at the bank. There is a much larger range of behavior that is now part of a socially acceptable marriage, but one thing that isn’t socailly acceptable in most circles is non-monogamy. Is this a good thing? I can believe that some people aren’t cut out to be sexually monogamous. For some of them, marriage probably just isn’t their thing. For some though, maybe they do need committed emotional support. Picking the default (offical) pattern of centuries ago because asking for what one needs breaks a social norm may not be right for all people. If that norm- the disgust towards anyone who proposes a non monogamous marriage were to change, what might happen?
I know that in the specific context of non-monogamy, there are LOTS of gender, power-balance, insecurity/not-acutally-sure-what-I-want kinds of problems that this brings up. I wonder if those likely negatives outweigh the possible benefits for those who don’t want to be in a monogamous marriage, but still want the emotional security and partnership that a marriage can provide.
I guess what I’m asking is:
Is monogamy itself another one of those cultural narratives that we are sold as “all people must have” or is it truely different?
