Meg on NPR!

by Meg Keene, Editor-In-Chief

Meg on NPR! | A Practical Wedding

Ok you guys, BIG NEWS. Like, all caps big. On Thursday (1/26) between 2:40 and 3:00 pm, EST, I’ll be talking about the book on Talk of the Nation on NPR. Not only that, but you can call and tweet in to participate. I knowwwww! This is, in sum, the most exciting professional thing that has ever happened to me, the kid who grew up without a TV and with only NPR. Think of this as me bringing the book tour to you, wherever you are in the world.

Here is how you can get the goods:

And, fun fact, I’m being interviewed by guest host Jennifer Ludden, who works NPR’s family and feminism beat. Perfect, amiright? I’m thrilled and delighted to be interviewed (the Talk of the Nation team has been extremely fun to work with), and I’m even more excited to imagine you all listening in!

And More…

Also! There is more press!

  • On Wednesday (1/25) I’ll be on WGBH Boston’s local NPR show, The Emily Rooney show at 12:10 pm EST. You can listen live here, if you’re not local.
  • On Friday (1/27) I will be on Martha Stewart Radio’s Sirius channel. So! If you have Sirius, listen in at 10:10 am EST.

And now you know why I need to go to sleep right now! I’m on the train from Chicago to Boston, and I’ve got a lot of resting up to do. Boston! I’ll see you at Porter Square Books on Wednesday. Brooklyn, you’re totally next.

Oh my gosh, I listen to NPR like it’s my job. Except that my actual job (stupid, actual job) will get in the way of listening live. Ah well, I’ll catch it soon enough after. How fun!

I am in the same boat. Though I do like my job, except when it gets in the way of NPR listening. Thank goodness for podcasts and NPR online. Once the story is up on their website, we’ll be able to click through and listen there.

I know. That’s the saving grace, or I’d be quitting my job right now! (I’m mostly kidding… :) )

Congrats! I can hear it now… “You know I just heard the greatest story about weddings on NPR…”

(That wasn’t you, BTW, that was my mom. In my world, being so big that my mom hears about you on NPR is a HUGE DEAL, so I do mean that in the raddest way.)

I used to work at WGBH! (Not on the radio side, though.) Did you know that Emily Rooney is Andy Rooney’s daughter?

  • Claire

Yay! This is big time. Congrats, Meg!

  • http://www.adventuresindressmaking.com Adventures in Dressmaking

    That is absolutely amazing!!!!

I grew up with NPR on all the time, and it’s still pretty much my only radio station. I’ll be sure to hear your interview!

  • Christa

    1) YAY! NPR! CONGRATULATIONS!

    2) This really isn’t related to NPR, but it does seem generally appropriate to the reclaiming wife side of APW. . . .

    http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2012/01/20/the-gingrich-question-cheating-vs-open-marriage/couples-should-negotiate-their-marriage-vows

Outside of the context of Gingrich’s open (or not) marriage, the idea of taking marriage to mean what it needs to for you and your partner seems pretty reasonable. Marriage no longer ONLY means the wife stays home and cooks and cleans and raises babies, while the husband works from 9-5 at the bank. There is a much larger range of behavior that is now part of a socially acceptable marriage, but one thing that isn’t socailly acceptable in most circles is non-monogamy. Is this a good thing? I can believe that some people aren’t cut out to be sexually monogamous. For some of them, marriage probably just isn’t their thing. For some though, maybe they do need committed emotional support. Picking the default (offical) pattern of centuries ago because asking for what one needs breaks a social norm may not be right for all people. If that norm- the disgust towards anyone who proposes a non monogamous marriage were to change, what might happen?

I know that in the specific context of non-monogamy, there are LOTS of gender, power-balance, insecurity/not-acutally-sure-what-I-want kinds of problems that this brings up. I wonder if those likely negatives outweigh the possible benefits for those who don’t want to be in a monogamous marriage, but still want the emotional security and partnership that a marriage can provide.

I guess what I’m asking is:

Is monogamy itself another one of those cultural narratives that we are sold as “all people must have” or is it truely different?

  • maura

    yay!! congrats!

  • Ms. A

    YAY!!! that’s super stellar.

  • http://nickandnoragettingmarried.wordpress.com Annie

No way! I work at WGBH so I am totally tuning into the Emily Rooney show that day.

    • meg

Wait. You work *at* WGBH? Why don’t you just come by and say hi? I’ll be there tomorrow and Thursday.

      • http://nickandnoragettingmarried.wordpress.com Annie

Totally!! I’m guessing today might be too late, but I’ll be at work tomorrow too. I’ll run across the street and pretend I’m not a total fangirl. ;)
