Introducing: APW Playlists!

by Maddie Eisenhart, Managing Editor

Beginnings from practicalmaddie on 8tracks Radio.

We’ve said it once and we’ll say it a million times: the APW staff is just a small part of what makes this site awesome. The rest is you guys. So we’re always looking for ways to tap into your brains and share your smarts with each other, particularly if this shared knowledge helps your fellow APWers cross some things off their wedding to-do lists.

Which is why I’m psyched today that we get to introduce a brand new feature to APW: Playlists crowdsourced from directly within our community. Each month we’ll round up the soundtrack songs from the previous month’s wordless weddings (because man, you guys pick the best stuff to listen to at work). And then in between, we’ll also be crowdsourcing really helpful lists of things like first dance songs, songs you can rock out to, parent dances, etc. and compiling them into playlists that you listen to anywhere you have access to the interwebs.

So! First up, the sweet sounds of January, brought to you by eight of APW’s finest:

“Beginnings”

  1. “You And I” by Ingrid Michaelson from Bridget & Kevin’s San Francisco City Hall Elopement for Introverts
  2. “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea” by Neutral Milk Hotel from Kaleigh & Mark’s Mountaintop Wedding
  3. “First Day of My Life” by Bright Eyes from Sarah & Chris’ Hurricane Sandy Wedding
  4. “Raining at Sunset” by Chris Thile from Julia & Ballard’s Rainy & Rustic Wedding
  5. “Digital Love” by Daft Punk as covered by Vitamin String Quartetfrom Kate & Micah’s Texas Lovefest
  6. “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by The Proclaimers from Jody & Rob’s Handcrafted Canadian Country Wedding
  7. “Heavenly Day ” by Patty Griffin from Erin & Rob’s Kid-Friendly Wedding with Alpacas
  8. “She Is” as covered by Sufjan Stevens from Brigid & Ximena’s Church & Croquet Wedding

Next, our first crowdsourced playlist will be first dance songs! Leave a comment below with your favorite first dance song, and we’ll round up some of our favorites and put it together in a playlist that you can access online.

Happy listening, y’all.

Our first song was the Talking Heads – This Must be the Place (Naive Melody) covered by my super rad brother’s band. We didn’t do a first dance because I don’t really like dancing but when it started planning I grabbed David and my sisters and we silly danced in a circle and I cried.

    • savychacha

This is what me and my husband danced to as well! We have really different tastes in music, but from the first time I heard this song with him, it was kind of “our song”. We would dance to it in our living room and I would cry. Happy tears though! Now every time I hear it I smile and think about him.

      • Kelsey

This was ours, too. The best part for me is twirling around in new-husband arms and seeing all of my friends do their own goofy dances on the sidelines.

  • Cara

Love and Some Verses by Iron and Wine.
Lovely for a wedding, first dance or parent dance.

  • Jess

    Aww, this is adorbs.

Our first dance song was “Northern Sky” by Nick Drake. Runner-up was “Time Has Told Me,” also by Nick Drake.

  • http://themoderngal.com The Modern Gal

We danced to When I’m Sixty-Four by the Beatles. It wasn’t the easiest song to dance to, but I think it’s a sweet and not overly sentimental song.

    • http://www.foreveryoungadult.com Erin

That’s what we’re dancing to, as well. It couldn’t be other than The Beatles for us, anyway, and it pretty much highlights how we hope our relationship will go.

    • Brigid

I used to work at a Country Club in college, and worked at lots of weddings. Once couple used this for their cake cutting song. As they were both widowed and in their mid-to-late 40s, the song was both sweet and kind of cheeky. It was one of the best weddings I’ve ever “been to.”

      • http://kristinyc.wordpress.com kristin

We used it for our cake cutting song! It was great!

  • SweetAdeline

You are the Best Thing – Ray Lamontagne

    Boy can that guy sing!

    • http://sweetandwildchild.blogspot.com jackie

      Ours was that too :)

  • http://landlockedlove.blogspot.com Kelly

Our first dance song was “I Could Write A Book” by Harry Connick Jr. from the When Harry Met Sally soundtrack. (The song is originally from the musical Pal Joey, but I love this version–and the movie–and the lyrics seemed apt, since we met while working in book publishing).

  • Jae

Our first dance was “Crazy Love” by Van Morrison

    • http://www.bridesanstulle.com Sharon

Ours was the Thea Gilmore cover of ‘Crazy Love’!

      • carrie

Ours was also a cover, Jason Manns and Jensen Ackles. Dean Winchester totally sang at my wedding.

        • Maddie

How did I miss this comment until now?

  • http://authenticwhitt.wordpress.com Jen W

Our first dance was to “God Only Knows (What I’d Be Without You)” by the Beach Boys. Not actually “our song”, but our song makes J weep anytime he hears it, so we went with something more upbeat.

    • Teresa

This was our first dance song as well! Though, in the months since our wedding, the song we cut the cake to (I Will by The Beatles) has become just as meaningful and sentimental to us as God Only Knows.

  • Bubbles

    OOO I LOVE THIS GAME.

Friends of mine used the song from the ballroom scene in the movie Labyrinth, which I thought was awesome.

I’ve always liked “Two of Us” by the Beatles.

TheBoyfriend suggested “I’ll Follow You Into the Dark” by Death Cab for Cutie for our first dance.

    • Susan

I will follow you into the dark is what I’m walking down the aisle to. It is my most favorite song ever!

    • Maddie

      THE SONG FROM LABYRINTH OMG.

      • http://becomingbrown.wordpress.com Jennifer Lyn

There was a couple at Dragon*Con this year who got married during the conference weekend and had a whole Labyrinth theme wedding. The girl was in a Sarah costume and the guy was Jareth.

    • Emily

This reminded me that my friend walked down the aisle to the Princess Bride theme song! (Storybook Love – Mark Knopfler: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ifSUhwmIMU )

      • carrie

Our party walked down to that. It still makes me a little teary eyed. :-)

        • Becca

          I’m doing this!

    • http://unexpected-moments.blogspot.ca/ Sheryl

I Will Follow You Into the Dark reminds me (always) of one of my favourite new year’s memories, slow dancing around the living room with my now husband. Thanks for taking me back there!

    • Em_perk

We did I will follow you into the dark as well, when we realized that our song (slow show by the national) wasn’t working out. We got super lucky that a member of the band we had for the wedding loved that song and already knew it. He did a beautiful job, and I get the warm fuzzies every time it pops up on pandora now.

      • Grif

Slow show by the national is a top pick for my walking down the aisle song – the break down at the end specifically. Why didn’t it work out for you? It is such a beautiful song. So is the Death Cab song though, that’s a great choice as well.

    • LZ

We totally danced to “I will Follow You in to the Dark” by Death Cab — It was great!!!!

  • Caitlin

We danced to “All the Things You Are” by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein. It’s been recorded by a lot of different folks. We had a live band perform it, but I really like Ella Fitzgerald’s version.

    • Peabody_Bites

I wanted this SO much, but our ska band wasn’t sure it would work. Perhaps rightly….

  • Sam

Our first dance will be “Three Little Birds” by Bob Marley. It’s ‘our’ song b/c he sang it to me once over the phone early in our relationship when I was upset and freaking out about something (who knows what). Not sure it would work for a general first dance though. I really want to use ‘three little birds’ as a desert topper, but I keep thinking that people will think I’m pregnant!

    • http://www.stalkingsarah.com Stalking Sarah

Eh, so what if they do! Maybe just don’t put them all in a row, but rather in a triangle formation or something. As long as you don’t have two big birds and one little one, I doubt anyone would make that connection. I mean, I think it would be pretty unusual for someone to announce a pregnancy via dessert topper! But then again, so what if they do!

  • Emily

We’re going to go with “Excuses” by the Morning Benders – one of the bands we’ve seen in concert together, and this song just feels very us. I like the epic strings too.

    • Itsy.Bitsy

      Mm, love this song!

  • http://www.stalkingsarah.com Stalking Sarah

We did a first dance to “Hallelujah (I Just Love Her So)” by Ray Charles. Neither of us was interested in a slow song, and this one is upbeat and fun — plus it’s actually quite short! It’s happy and joyful and wonderful. And even though it has a male singer and reference to a female love, we were quite happy and comfortable using it for our song. Sometimes it’s not about the pronouns or genders, it’s about the kind of happy it makes you.

Also: One of my favorite day-of wedding memories: On our wedding morning, before we did anything, we put on a playlist of favorite music. Unexpectedly, our first dance song came on first. We got out of bed and danced to it, just the two of us in our pajamas in the hotel room. It was an amazing way of taking a moment to just be present.

There is a lifespan of days that we danced to that song — the first time I put it on in the kitchen and we danced to it, the time we put it on and thought about it as a first dance song, all the times when we knew it would be our first dance song and practiced it while dinner was cooking, etc. There will be more dancing to that song, I’m sure. But while dancing to it at our wedding was the most grand and public iteration, I think my favorite one will always be the private, just-for-us moment from that morning in the hotel room.

  • Ali

Not engaged yet, but my guy and I call Barbara Lewis’ “Baby I’m Yours” our song and, possibly, our first dance song The Arctic Monkeys do an unbelievably tender cover of it!

    • http://asashaparty.blogspot.com thesasha

      That was almost our song!

We used “This Will be Our Year” by The Zombies, performed by my stepfather (A music teacher/musician who once met The Zombies)

      Other songs we almost chose:
The Way I Am by Ingrid Michaelson
All for You by Sister Hazel (I used this for our save the date…it weirdly fit the timeline of our relationship and how we feel, and I have a deep love of 90s pop)

Songs I thought would be hilarious and perfect but were vetoed:
      Wannabe by the Spice Girls
      Gold Digger by Kanye West

Songs that I love and would make great first dance but he did not consider for us:
      Forever by Ben Harper
Til You’re Dead by Melissa Ferrick
      Ice Cream by Sarah McLachlan

      • http://thegreatwideworld.blogspot.com Becca

We used OK Go’s cover of “This Will be Our Year” as our exit song! It’s so perfect.

First dance song was The Luckiest by Ben Folds which is forever long and kinda slow, but so perfect for us since Boyfriend played it to me on piano the first month we dated.

    • Sarah

I think I’ll be walking down the isle to the Arctic Monkeys version!

  • LoLauren

I read this while listening to 8tracks…needless to say I am SO PUMPED for this. Thank you!!! and that picture? You’re killing me over here.

Also- That’s how strong my love is. Otis Redding

  • Another Meg

“Carry this Picture” by Dashboard Confessional, sweet song and very easy to slow dance to.
Also, “International Small Arms Traffic Blues” by the Mountain Goats.Weird but perfect for us.

    • http://www.stitch-witch.net Christina McPants

I may have used the International Small Arms Traffic Blues in a romantic mix CD I gave to my now wife.

  • Melissa

We danced to “Sea of Love” by Cat Power. It was lovely.

    • Adi

I love that song!!!! It was on my playlist :)

  • Erin

We danced to “Stuck on You” by Meiko, it was a fun little song that got our wedding dance party off on the right foot.

  • http://hitchdied.com Robin HitchDied

“I’ll Be Your Mirror” by the Velvet Underground, hipster-approved by has stood the test of time, hella romantic message especially because our relationship has had to weather my depression, allows for hip shimmying within a slow dance, and is only about two minutes long.

  • http://www.stitch-witch.net Christina McPants

“Go Places” by the New Pornographers. It’s a waltz, but a fantastic song. Seriously considering getting a verse tattooed on me.

  • http://www.xwebseries.com Cali

We danced to “I’ve Had the Time of My Life” from Dirty Dancing.

It was perfect for us, because we aren’t really into slow dancing but we still wanted a romantic song. We got to rock out and do all sorts of silly things on the dance floor, and it really got the party off to lively start. It was a blast!

    • Colleen

This was our last song & it was The Funnest! (Our exit song was “Dance Myself to Sleep” from Sesame Street.)

First dance was The Luckiest by Ben Folds

    • carrie

This was our last song and I was so afraid it was going to be super cheesy, but it was so. much. fun.

  • j

Think I’m In Love – Beck. One of the sweetest love songs ever. And it’s good to dance to.

  • http://dressingfordinner.blogspot.com Gemma

We had I Only Have Eyes For You by The Flamingos, which we decided on years ago, followed by Tenth Avenue Freeze Out to get everyone dancing!

  • http://blog.jayleephotography.net Josh+Ali

“Can’t Help Falling In Love” by Ingrid Michaelson was ours. Such a sweet version.

  • http://www.saravictorious.com Sara

Our first dance was James Brown’s I Got You (I Feel Good). We had planned to do a traditional slow dance, but it just wasn’t feeling like it fit. I had a ballroom dance instructor friend who owed me a favor, so he ended up choreographing a swing dance to I Got You for us, which turned out great!

It’s amusing because I think our first dance is one of the moments that people remember the most from our reception, but they don’t remember it accurately – as the years go by, stories of the dance keep becoming more elaborate, which always makes me grin. We had tossed around the idea of getting a video of the dance, but now I’m so glad that we didn’t. I’d much rather have the larger-than-life memory, than the imperfect reality. :)

  • Kess

I freaking love “You and I”!

My SO and I went on our first backpacking trip and while I was packing for said trip (I had time off, he didn’t) I pretty much was listening to that non-stop. I sang it pretty much the whole way on our 9 hour drive, with my SO joining in enthusiastically. It was the soundtrack for that trip.

Definitely going to be on our playlist somewhere.

  • http://youlovelucy.tumblr.com youlovelucy

Yes!! I just started messing around with 8tracks too, this is so exciting!

Our first dance song was “Forever” by Ben Harper. :)

    • http://youlovelucy.tumblr.com youlovelucy

Side note: This new series is just another thing that works so well for my goal of listening to 1,000 new songs this year.

      • A Single Sarah for certain values of single

For that goal, I recommend listening through the SXSW torrent. It should be released sometime this month. So many new artists!

I should work on my goal of listening to all the SXSW tracks from a year in the matching calendar year.

  • Claire Elizabeth

These choices are all so great. APW’ers have superb musical taste.

If I Should Fall Behind – Bruce Springsteen (The husb hearts the boss)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1n7Zwz-ABXU

For our recessional we used Million Dollars by Joel Plasket
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjD564Q52jc Can-con FTW!

  • Kayakgirl73

Better Together by Jack Johnson was our first dance song.

    • http://breadandcheesepease.com Chariseq

My cousin played an acoustic version of Better Together for our recessional – such a good just-upbeat-enough song!

    • Katherine

It’s going to be ours too :-) LOVE that song!!

  • Susan

Our first dance is going to be Keepin’ It Real by Mason Jennings. It became “our” song on one of our first long road trips together. It’s going to be hard to dance to but no song could be more perfect!

  • Kelsey D.

I don’t think we’ll be using it for our wedding, but I’ve always thought that “The Ballad of Love and Hate” by the Avett Brothers would be a good first dance song. It’s a little moody, though.

  • Alexis

This is such a good idea! We went disco for our first dance with September by Earth, Wind & Fire. I just love that song and while we did indeed get married in September, the funky, upbeat tune helped us embrace the awkwardness of our guests watching us step on each others toes with big goofy grins on our faces. We also invited everyone to join us about halfway through the song. Home by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros was a close second choice that we played as the last dance.

  • http://poppiesandicecream.blogspot.nl/ Amanda

Our first dance song(you can see us dancing here) was “I was made for you” by She & Him. I really love the old 60s vibe to it, and every time I listen it it makes me smile so much.
    Here’s the full song.

  • Meghan

ACK! We all walked down the aisle to “Heavenly Day”. It is so pretty it makes me ache, and to this day (two and a half years later) I can’t listen to it without grinning stupidly and welling up. It is perfection.

Our first dance was “Bright Smile” by Josh Ritter. He’s the best, and how do you say no to the line “Just pin your heartbeat up against my heartbeat and you’ll see how well we rhyme”?

  • http://blog.halfacregoods.com Erin

Our first dance was to Grow Old With You by Adam Sandler from the Wedding Singer. Super short, to the point, and reflective of us. Huzzah!

    • Jessica

      Ours too! I LOVED it.

  • Joy

“You Send Me” sung by Sam Cooke.

  • http://www.cupcakefridayproject.com Mel

“Still in Love With You” by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy :D Though I kind of wish we had danced to “Everlong” by The Foo Fighters (our favorite band).

  • MissStumptown

Ours will be “Sea of Love” as covered by Cat Powers. It’s short and sweet, plus its slow tempo and ethereal feel will provide a nice contrast to the song directly after it, “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen.

Others considered: “Earth Angel” as covered by Death Cab for Cutie, “I Found You” by Alabama Shakes, “Best Thing for Me” by Release the Sunbird and “Eyes” by Rogue Wave.

  • Rachel

Our first dance song was “January Wedding” by The Avett Brothers. We had a good friend’s blue grass band perform at our wedding reception. Because we got married in the fall, the singer changed the lyrics to October instead of January. It was absolutely perfect.

  • JESS

Ours was “The Promise” by Tracy Chapman, an especially relevant song if you’ve done long distance or, like us, are from different places. The lyrics are so sweet and the melody is beautiful.

  • Corrie

YESSSSS!!!! I love this idea so much! I actually started adding all the wordless wedding songs into a Spotify playlist since December, so this just makes it even better! THANKS APW!

  • Dori

“At Last” (the Beyonce cover, which was sung at Obama’s inauguration, and which holds special meaning for that reason, and also because it’s just a gorgeous song.)

  • Brigid

Our first dance will be Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes,” which has been “our song” since the first week we were dating.

  • tennymo

This is a fantastic idea! My old soul loves these:

    Blackbird, The Beatles

I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free, Nina Simone

Oh Me, Oh My!, Aretha Franklin

But we actually went with Lauren Hill’s cover of Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You for our first dane. It was fantastic, everyone in a circle around us was pumping their fist and belting it out when the beat dropped and the chorus came in. Even grandparents know the words because of the original by Smokey Robinson.

    • Kelly

We also used Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You! (Though the original is Frank Valli, right?) It was perfect- our band started off really slow then sped it up when the chorus came in. One of my favorite parts of the wedding.

  • http://kristinyc.wordpress.com kristin

Our first dance was “The Book of Love” by Peter Gabriel. looooooved it.

    • NF

This was our second choice. We ended up making it our last dance instead.

    • Adi

The original is by The Magnetic Fields and that’s the song I walked down the aisle to. It was perfect :)

    • Alison

This was my best friend’s first dance with her husband!

      • LZ

I walked down the Isle to Book of Love by Peter Gabriel — Now every time I hear it, I get transported to that day. Wonderful!!

  • NF

Since You’ve Asked by Judy Collins–the lyrics are pretty much how I would describe marriage.

  • http://www.missgiggles.com/blog Giggles

Our first song was “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz.

We still pull out our wedding playlist every year on our anniversary and dance to it all over again in our living room.

  • Samantha

First of all, YES! to crowd-sourced playlists. This is fantastic. Best ideas ever here.

Our wedding is in September and my fiance and I are going to ask two of my brothers and one of their girlfriends – all insanely musically talented, and are going/went to school for music industry and performance – to play our first dance song. We are going to have them do an acoustic version of “If you Run” by The Boxer Rebellion. They play it in Going the Distance, which had the awesome timing of coming out during our early years of long distance and thus became “our” movie so it’s super meaningful on two levels. :) On the plus it’s a completely non-obvious first dance song which is great!

  • Kelly

Lets Get it On by Marvin Gaye was our first dance song and it was perfect, and kinda funny. Even funnier was my slightly tipsy father cutting in to dance with me in the middle of the song, and my partner’s mother then dancing with him. I don’t think either of them were paying attention to the words, they were just excited, and we like to laugh about it now.

    • http://themoderngal.com The Modern Gal

That was actually our LAST dance song! My husband and I sort of fell in love over dancing at a local dive bar, and that is always the last song of the night there. We’ve claimed it as “our song” but figured to keep with tradition it had to be the last song of the night :)

  • http://caitontheroad.blogspot.com Caitlin

    Lovely Tonight by Joshua Radin

Home by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

    • http://landlockedlove.blogspot.com Kelly

“Home” was our recessional song! (What we walked back up the aisle to).

      We love it.

  • Jeni

We used the John Lennon version of “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King. So many great ideas here!

    • Sara W

We used Ben E. King’s original of “Stand By Me”. Great song with really moving lyrics!

  • http://landlockedlove.blogspot.com Kelly

APW, I hope you guys collect “last dance songs” as well. I didn’t care much about our first dance song in the scheme of things, but our last dance song ended up being extremely important and emotional for me!

    • Shiri

I loved our “last dance”. I didn’t think we’d have one, but the DJ insisted. We used This Will be Our Year by the Zombies and it was awesome.

      • http://caitontheroad.blogspot.com Caitlin

Our last dance song was “Save the last dance for me” by The Drifters :):)

      • Em

The Foo Fighters cover of this will be our year is AWESOME, also :)

    • Caroline

Please! Meg’s discussion of their last dance made me want to plan a special song for it but I have no real idea what. Ok, I have one idea, but it feels totally inappropriate. I LOVE the song “Freedom Day” by Max Roach and Abbey Lincoln, it’s one of both of our favorite songs. My issue with it is that I’ve never met a song that screams sex quite that loud. It melts me. If you ever meet anyone who thinks jazz is boring, play them that song. It’s aural sex (pun unintentional.) You can sort of living room shuffle to it, but it might be too sexy for a family event. It isn’t explicit, it just feels sexy. (It’s actually about freedom from slavery and oppression, not sex, the album was written intending to be played on the centennial of the emancipation proclamation.)

      • LIZ (SINCE 1982)

My first reaction was “Doooo iiiiiit! Everyone will be drunk by then!”

In all seriousness, I think the happy-vibes from your amazing wedding and party will carry everyone through a little extra sexiness. And then you get to run off into the night with your new spouse and do something about it, ha.

    • http://asashaparty.blogspot.com Sasha

My last dance song wasn’t planned or with my husband, but it was perfect. A friend had the DJ put on “As Cool As I Am” by Dar Williams at the end of the wedding, after the bond was done, and all my college friends and I danced to it (it’s kind of a tradition at our school to spin around crazily to it, and our unofficial anthem.) Getting spun crazily in my dress and knowing they had come from all over because they love me was awesome.

I’d love to hear more last song stories too!

  • Autumn

Ours was Danny’s Song by Anne Murray. The refrain “even though we ain’t got money, I’m so in love with you honey” has been something I would sing to my guy since we were first together. We were lucky and one of our super talented friends played the guitar and sang it for us. One of my favorite wedding memories by far. :)

  • Lu

We did “let’s call the whole thing off” Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. He is British and I’m American so it fit us well and made all the guests laugh a bit.

  • Emily

Not set in stone yet, but we’ve been practicing bouncing around in a semi-coordinated manner to “I Belong in Your Arms” by Chairlift as a possible first dance. We want something upbeat and a little silly since the wedding is at a Children’s Museum.

  • http://twitter.com/leahruthie Leah

Oh I heart this so much.

Our first dance: “The Luckiest,” Ben Folds.

My second choice: an acoustic cover of “Such Great Heights” performed by Tyler Smith (slower than the Postal Service version but faster than Iron & Wine… LOVE!).

  • http://themoderngal.com The Modern Gal

I love the variety of songs! These will definitely result in an awesome playlist. What a great new feature.

APW Editors — I would love to make a request for a Spotify version of these playlists going forward. Spotify makes it very easy to create and share playlists, and it’s becoming a common feature around blogland!

  • http://www.beckymochaface.com Becky Mochaface

Our first dance was to “Brighter Than Sunshine” by Aqualung.

    • Adi

AHH I LOVE THIS! It’s not one my husband loves but I made sure it was on our reception playlist :)

  • http://breadandcheeseplease.com Charise

Ours was Tupelo Honey by Van Morrison. Although the DJ played some abomination of a cover instead and I thought it would be too bridezilla to stop and correct him, and ended up looking angry in all our first dance pictures. I can laugh about it now. :)

  • Caroline

I’m pulling for Sinatra’s Fly Me to the Moon for our first dance song. We haven’t gotten so far as discussing our first dance song (early in planning), but when we dance in our living room, that is one of our favorite songs, and he brings out his private rat pack crooner voice and sings to me. He never uses his beautiful crooner voice in public, he has an entirely different public singing voice, and only a few of his closest friends know he has it. It’s his private singing voice only for when he feels most safe, so it makes me feel so special when he uses it to sing to me, especially for Fly Me to the Moon.

  • Shiri

I Will by The Beatles, but I never remember the title, I always have to sing it to myself to figure out which one it is.

    • Sara W

A friend of ours played this on her acoustic guitar during the reception. What a great song!

  • http://workoflove.wordpress.com Shaelyn

Our first dance was to “Sweet Pea” by Amos Lee, and I continue to smile any time I hear it in a store or when my iPhone is on shuffle. We don’t have a ~song~, so we were looking for something happy, short, and upbeat — and the fact that my husband calls me Sweet Pea was icing on the cake!

  • http://unexpected-moments.blogspot.ca/ Sheryl

We never had a first dance (officially) but I dreamed about Brad Paisley’s “Two People Fell In Love”. His music has special significance to my husband and I, and that song feels like it was meant to be for someone’s first dance.

  • Rebekah

My SO gets the final say, but I’m lobbying hard for “Faithfully” by Journey.

    • Meg

We used “Don’t Stop Believin’” as our recessional, because we’re wacky like that. Good luck with the decision-making! ;)

      • Rebekah

We’re both big Red Wings fans, so I’m sure that one will factor in somewhere in the playlist :)

        • Anya

I tried lobbying. But my fiance is a Penguins fan. :(

  • Claire

    The Winds by Danny Schmidt
Dance Me to the End of Love by Leonard Cohen

  • Lauren

That’s Where It’s At by Sam Cooke. Sexual for sure, but subtle.

And short. Around 2:30. Plenty long for a first dance.

  • Lauren

    “Wagon Wheel” by OCMS.

Rock me, mama, like the wind and the rain, rock me, mama, like a southbound train.

    • Nicole

We used Wagon Wheel during our ceremony and it was awesome!

  • Adi

I walked down the aisle to “Book of Love” by The Magnetic Fields, as sung by my friend Dana
Our first dance was “Love” by John Lennon because I am very tactile and I need touch to feel loved, and one line is “Love is touch” so it’s perfect :)
My father-daughter song was “As I Go” by Richard Swift, and that one made me cry the most!

  • LBD

The Beatles – I Saw Her Standing There. I was all about a happy bouncy joyful song for the first dance. I was 17 and he was 18 when we started dating, and we both love The Beatles.

  • http://www.discoveryourhoneymoon.com/ Morgan

    “Then” by Brad Paisley

Country music has a ton of great wedding songs but just listen to the words of this one and hopefully it will ring true to all of you as it does to us!

  • Kait

We haven’t figured out our first dance song yet but inspired by Meg we’ve picked our last dance. Our last dance will be Come on and get higher by Matt Nathanson. It’s been our song since the beginning and now we just have to decide if it’s going to be Sugarland’s cover (which you have to check out) or the original.

  • http://blindirishpirate.blogspot.com Blind Irish Pirate

AUGH. I am going to be commenter 101, or something, but I can’t help but to share. This is absolutely my favorite thing to do… listen to music and think/dream/remember/desire.

So, our first dance song is actually NOT the one I am submitting, because, hey, we all change. “Bless Your Tombstone Heart” by the Low Anthem.

    • http://blindirishpirate.blogspot.com Blind Irish Pirate

BLAH!!! And Chris Thile, I just died a little.

  • Karoline

We are both super awkward dancers, so for our ‘first dance’, we decided to go with Dela by Johnny Clegg – it’s a fun song, it’s sweet, and it’s the song that plays during the great dancing scene from George of the Jungle =)

    • Nicole

That’s my favorite song of all time!! And it’s the song that I walked down the aisle to. I’m glad I’m not the only George of the Jungle fan out there. :)

  • Lindsay B.

Trying to decide between “You and I,” the Avett Brothers’ “Swept Away” vs “The Greatest Sum”, and Patrick Park’s “You’re Enough” – walking down the aisle to the Avetts though, so I should give someone else a chance for the first dance :)

  • http://www.thedilettantista.com The Dilettantista

Louis Armstrong’s version of “La Vie en Rose” is a current strong contender for first dance song. No, we’re not engaged yet. Yes, we’ve discussed this. Also it is used in Wall-E, one of our favorite movies ever.

  • Megan

Most likely “Buckets of Rain” by Bob Dylan. Must say, I just love reading what everyone else used/will use! So happy to see APW facilitating :)

  • Elissa

I’m really not keen on the “first dance”, as I’m not much of a dancer and the thought of all those people looking at me – ugh! But I thought if I couldn’t get out of it, it would be fun to dance to “Tongue Tied” from Red Dwarf (with the video up on a projector). If we /must/ dance, at least it can be fun and fit our nerdy style. For some reason a parody first dance seems much less awkward than a serious one in my imagination.

  • Amber

My fiance and I haven’t talked much about playlist or first dance or music in general yet, but I’d LOVE to include “Bella Luna” by Jason Mraz.

  • Nicole

We ended up not actually having a first dance, but the plan was Mango Tree by Angus & Julia Stone.

  • http://www.ouatinreallife.blogspot.com Erin

Our first dance was to “Grow Old with Me” by Mary Chapin Carpenter. It was slow and beautiful and also the song my husband was “supposed” to sing to me when he proposed (he ran out of time and didn’t learn how to play it on the guitar so didn’t) which makes me smile with the memories of our proposal and slow dancing in my parent’s living room.

    • Meg

We used this as a singalong during our ceremony. We had the lyrics on the back of the program. It was awkward, because it wasn’t a well-known song, but it was such a sweet moment. :)

  • Jessica

Ours was “The Luckiest” by Ben Folds.

  • Nikki

Were doing a country song! Maybe ‘Thnmen’I by Brad Paisley

  • http://buffalowrites.com Laura

Ours was “Let’s Stay Together” by Al Green. And now it’s playin through my head all over again…

  • Erin

Choosing a first dance song has evolved, from “Stand by Me” by Ben E. King vs. “All your Need is Me” by Morrissey, into an entire playlist of “okay guys, here’s the entire history of us in 100 songs” type of thing, from the moment the guests start arriving until the closing bell. I’ve fallen in love with making the soundtrack of the day a retrospective of us (we go back more than a decade, starting as bashful teenage buddies, so it’s an interesting trip). Meaningful, fun, funny, a little tongue in cheek.

  • Susanna

Hung the Moon by Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors is the most perfect first dance song in existence (not that I am partial or anything). It has all the qualities of a great first dance song; it is short, easy to dance to, and a simple, sweet love song.
The last verse is the best:
I’ll put on that white dress for you, uh huh
Tell the preacher man, why yes I do, uh huh
I’ll stay and I’ll grow grey with you, uh huh
I like the way you hung the moon, uh huh

Still makes me weepy every time.

  • http://futuremrsrobinson,wordpress.com SonjaLouise

We’ve just begun looking a music for our ceremony etc. next January!
At the moment, we really like “Hold On” by Michael Buble – it seems realistic, not like other love song that make promises that could never be kept (most probably).
Looking for songs, that capture the mood, reflect ‘us’ and aren’t OTT or cheesy is…difficult!

  • Mayweed

We had All About You by McFly for our first dance – not a song that ANY of our friends would have expected us to choose but we both love it. (http://vimeo.com/721426)

Our exit song was the far cooler Friday I’m in love by the Cure (the wedding was a Friday!). And our last dance song, which was not planned by me or my husband but my little brother who was our MC, was Champagne Supernova by Oasis – he got everyone to stand round us in a circle while we danced. Unexpected, but a lovely memory.

  • Sophie

We’re planning on Unforgettable, by Natalie Cole and Nat King Cole.

It’s a little tricky for me because of the father/daughter element, and I’m not planning on inviting my father and don’t want to be reminded of him during our first dance.

Maybe just the Nat King Cole version?

  • Liz B.

Our first dance was to “I Won’t Give Up” by Jason Mraz this past August. It seemed fitting since we’d already been dating for 10 years off and on. It was very sweet and makes me smile every time I hear it now.

If we hadn’t chosen that song, it would have been a toss up between “Stay Young, Go Dancing” by Death Cab for Cutie and “The Light” by Sara Bareilles.

  • Kristie

Our first dance was to “My Favourite Book” by Stars. It is sentimental, but not overly so, and appropriately upbeat! It was perfect!

  • Alison

Our first dance was “At Last” by Etta James, which is also the first song that we ever danced to together. My other favorite song of the night was “Just the Way You Are” by Billy Joel, which my brother arranged for his a capella group and then surprised me by singing the solo. It made me cry!

  • Kathryn

Love this idea!! I’ve got three songs because I can’t just choose one:
    - All My Days by Alexi Murdoch (this was our first dance song). I also walked down the aisle to Orange Sky.
    - Indian Moon by State Radio – My husband didn’t like this one as much, but I still think it would make a perfect first dance song.
    - Just Breathe by Pearl Jam – because, well, I pretty much love Eddie Vedder.

    • Brooke

      love Alexi Murdoch!

      • EJ

Oooh! So glad that someone else mentioned “All My Days”. That’s my vote for first dance song. I’ve loved it ever since seeing Away We Go.

  • DeeAnna

Our first dance song was “Just Like We Do” by Eisley.

  • http://www.wrightremedy.blogspot.com Addie

My forever favorite aisle walking/ first dance song is Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” particularly their version with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra.

Maybe cuz it’s a metal ballad and I’m a child of the 80′s but “Trust I seek and I find in you/Everyday for us something new” gets me every time.

  • Laura

Our first dance song was I’d Rather Be with You by Joshua Radin. Short and sweet, then we played Friday I’m in Love by the Cure to get people on the dance floor (and because we got married on a Friday). Loved both, hated dancing in front of people!

  • Rachel

My parents’ song is an old country song from Don Williams — you’re my best friend. It makes me tear up every single time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQDWayLiOEE

Another love song that I adore is Tristan Prettyman — All I Want is You.

We haven’t picked our first dance song yet — trying to find one we can dance West Coast Swing to. Tricky.

    • Brenda

Coming late to this comment, but yay west coast swing! My favourite song for that is Britney Spears Toxic. Possibly slightly inappropriate though :)

  • http://www.sarahhoppes.com Sarah Hoppes

We didn’t do first dances at our wedding, but we had to big parties in our home town, and the party in his home town was pretty traditional (as traditional as a post-wedding party can be), with toasts and first dances. Our first dance was to “This Will Be Our Year” by the Zombies, and we ended up doing parent dances -his with his mom to “When You Wish Upon a Star,” and mine with my dad to “Daughter” by Londoun Wrainwright (the song that plays at the end of “Knocked Up.”

    • http://www.sarahhoppes.wordpress.com Sarah Hoppes

Ours was also a good example of holding your ground for traditions that don’t feel authentic, balanced with making others happy. We felt really awkward about the “clutch and sway” that would be our dance (neither of us are coordinated, and although I enjoy dancing, I have exactly zero rythmn.), so we didn’t do any ceremonial dances at our wedding. We picked songs that had meaning for us for our aisle entrance (In My Life-the Beatles) and exit (When I’m 64-The Beatles), and for a playlist that went before and after the ceremony. We only did dances at his hometown party because it became clear it was something his mom really wanted to see us do, and something she wanted to participate in. (His dad danced with his sister at HER wedding. His mom wanted her time to enjoy that tradition.) My dad liked it, I think, but he has a gruff exterior. As we were dancing he said “I barely dance with your mother, and I kind of think this whole thing is bullsh*t, so you should know you’re lucky I’m even up here.” But, then he cried so maybe he’s the one who’s full of it!

  • Tegan

Our first dance was I’m Glad There is You, sung by Ella Fitzgerald. Its lyrics were (are) so perfect.

  • Carolyn

We did our “husband and wife entrance” thingamagig to the Monday Night Football theme song. BA BA BA BUMMMMMM … BA BA BA BA BAH BUMMMMMMM ….

    It was amazing.

Then we did our first dance to the Ella Fitzgerald/Louis Armstrong version of the Gershwin “Love Is Here To Stay” … my dad and I danced to “Stand by Me” by Ben E. King, and my husband and his mom danced to Lynryrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man” … which was the best of anything she had previously suggested. Such as four Tina Turner songs in a row about red hot love. The best part about it was when it got to the chorus and people are singing along to the line about “my only son” … when my husband’s identical twin brother figured out “HEY WAIT A MINUTE MOM …”

She claims it was an oversight. But now we all know my husband is officially her favorite son.

  • mimi

I love this idea! I was literally just going through Wordless Weddings last week to get songs to add to our playlist, so the timing couldn’t be better! :) APW does it again!

  • D

“Lost Together” by Blue Rodeo was our first dance song. A beautiful song by a popular Canadian band that I’d loved since I was 16.

  • Lauren

“Into the Mystic,” Van Morrison :)

    • Lauren

(Also, I am SUPER excited about this playlist!)

    • http://cuvikingadventures.blogspot.com/ Jenny- Adventures Along the Way

      I love that song!

  • kyley

    THANK YOU! For this!

I don’t love to open youtube at work. Even when I’m not watching the videos, I just feel paranoid about it. So this is super awesome!

One first dance song we are considering is “Ladies and Gentleman, We Are Floating in Space” by Spirtualized.

Also, for entrance/walking down the aisle songs: For those of you who love Pachabel’s Cannon, but don’t love how traditional it is? Consider this song. Srsly.

  • Meg

Our first dance was to Nat King Cole’s “That’s All”. If you’ve never heard it (I hadn’t until my fiance played it for me), it is gorgeous. The lyrics felt especially appropriate for two broke lovebirds. ;)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sooSaQpGnMM

That said, I also love the idea of using “My Baby’s Off the Market” by the Two Man Gentleman Band. I saw a wedding somewhere that used it and thought it was fantastic idea. So cheeky and upbeat.

  • Emily

I love that no one seems to know about this song; it makes it very personal to my partner and I. But in the name of APW, I am sharing it.

Neither my husband nor I is particularly inclined to be mushy with each other — we’re much more likely to “insult” each other when we OBVIOUSLY mean the opposite of what we’re saying. So we danced to Frank Sinatra and Betty Garrett singing “You’re Awful”, from the movie “On the Town”. And it was perfect. :)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcBPX9XndHI

  • Jess

1953 by the Dropkick Murphys is our first dance. We first spoke when he saw me put Dropkick on a juke box in a bar. Then the lyrics perfectly describe the type of marriage we hope to have.

  • Becky

We kind of have two songs. We had decided on “Fly Me To The Moon” by Frank Sinatra because that’s our favorite song of his. At the last minute, my husband suggested “Cricket” by Dance Hall Crashers. He was really sad when we couldn’t find a version of the whole song to download, so he gave up. I surprised him at the wedding by playing the partial song anyway, and loved the look on his face. I love that he picked it for us in a flash of inspiration, and it harkens back to his ska/punk roots.

  • http://cuvikingadventures.blogspot.com/ Jenny- Adventures Along the Way

We used Holly Cole’s cover of All I Want Is You.

Before deciding on that, I searched and searched to find nothing particularly “us” and appropriate for a first dance, then just a couple days before the wedding we were sitting at his computer and he said, “How about this?” It is was perfect. His one suggestion was the one (after all my research for ages). :)

  • EE

“That’s How Strong My Love Is” by Otis Redding. Not only is it a beautiful song, it’s also short, sweet, and sway-able (no fancy footwork required).

  • Meaghan

Ours was What a Heart is Beating For by Chris Rice – lovely lyrics & a triplet meter so we could waltz. :-)

  • http://thebookguardian.blogspot.com AmandaStretch

We danced to my dad singing The Wedding Song by Paul Stookey, accompanied by my uncle on guitar. It’s one Dad used to play a lot around the house, so it was pretty much a no brainer.

  • Dee

Ours will be “Let’s Make This Moment a Crime” by The Format.

  • Sarah

“See Me Through” by Eric Lindell

  • MDBethann

“Just the Way You Are” by Billy Joel and we sort of did the rumba to it. Our guests were impressed by the twirls & spins, but I think our ballroom dancing instructor would have been rather critical of our moves. Wondering to each other what she’d say if she was there had us smiling and laughing during our first dance.

  • Krista

Nina Simone’s Feeling Good, which is less than a minute and a half long. It was a compromise between my husband who didn’t want to spend 4 minutes with people staring at us while we turned in circles, and me wanting to have that moment with him. Plus we choreographed it so we didn’t have a second to feel awkward, just exhilarated. We used the longish intro as a recessional, then started our dance (because we did the reception and ceremony all in the same room).

  • Alyssa

I love this idea! My wife and I danced to They Say It’s Spring by Blossom Dearie.

  • Jen

I’m late to the party but I just wanted to throw mine out there in case it is useful to anyone – we had Eddie Vedder’s The Golden State, which I had never heard until I saw it on Leah’s video (http://www.agirlandaboy.com). We instantly fell in love with it.

  • Kate

So this is late but I couldn’t help myself… is this alright?

    I couldn’t find everything.

    • http://asashaparty.blogspot.com Sasha

haha, I did the same thing, started a while back, came to finish and sawyyour comment. Great minds?

  • http://ladybrettashley.wordpress.com lady brett

oh dear, how did i miss this one? i *loved* the music at our wedding – i still listen to it all the time.

our first dance was “you’re the one” by tracy chapman.

it was the song i wanted right off the bat, but it took me a while to decide that it was okay to use something that’s not very upbeat (turns out all the songs i liked for the wedding were kind of gritty – i feel like they spoke more accurately to the kind of love you go into a marriage with). also, it’s really groovy and sexy, musically.

  • http://www.sarahvanloon.wordpress.com Sarah vL

Just wanted to add to the mix: our first dance song was Patrick Watson’s “Slip Into Your Skin” – a beautiful, ethereal waltz.

One of my favorite lines, “Be the blanket for my bones// Be a place that I call home//…Cause I feel like a different man// I feel it when I’m with you” It’s so beautiful!

  • Hintz

Somehow I missed this thread before… so many songs! We haven’t chosen yet but the few in the running are “Swing Life Away” by Rise Against, “Nothing Else Matters” by Metallica, “Everlong” by the Foo Fighters or “Calling You” or “18th Floor Balcony” by Blue October… no matter which one of those we actually dance to I’m pretty sure they’ll get played.

  • http://newcomfortfood.wordpress.com JenMcC

I’m late to this party too, but I feel compelled to share the following song, which I think is a most excellent first dance song (but my fiance does not agree):
    Let’s Dance by David Bowie

“If you say run, I’ll run with you
If you say hide, we’ll hide
    Because my love for you
Would break my heart in two
    If you should fall
    Into my arms
    And tremble like a flower”

I mean, come on. It’s SO GREAT.

    • Hintz

I love that! my fiance wouldn’t go for it either… but that’d be so much fun

  • Toni1835

If we do a first dance it will be to Dave Matthews Band “You and Me.” Still not sure it’s going to happen.

I also really love Everything by Michael Buble, You’re The Best Thing by the Style Council and Fly Me To the Moon by Sinatra (of course) have always been a fave!

  • http://arealliveladyperson.blogspot.com Krissy

We’re doing Silence is the Question by The Bad Plus. It’s not obviously so, but it is super romantic. :)

  • Abby

We used “Make You Feel My Love” by Adele, sung by one of my husband’s best friends! (Originally a Bob Dylan song, but there are lots of covers in a variety of music styles.)

  • http://RosentholDesign.com Gilly

Every since I was a kid I imagined dancing to the Sleeping Beauty Waltz at my wedding — you know, the “Once Upon a Dream” one. Well, turns out my fiancé is a total Disney nut, we’re doing lots of Disney theming for the wedding, so the song is actually the perfect choice. We’re still picking out some instrumental versions of Disney songs for the ceremony — I’m thinking I’ll walk in to When You Wish Upon a Star.
