Lizzie & Neil’s Summer Camp Wedding

* Lizzie, Pediatric Nurse, & Neil, Law Student * Photographer: Christina Richards Weddings (APW Sponsor) * Soundtrack for reading: “Froggie Went A-Courtin’” by Bruce Springsteen *

One sentence sum up of the wedding vibe: Like a fun day at summer camp, but with booze, better food, and all your favorite people celebrating you and the one you love the most.

Other cool stuff we should know about: Things worked out for this day in ways we couldn’t have possibly thought up. No inclement weather plan? Eighteen hours of rain will stop minutes before your ceremony! No wedding planner? Don’t worry, a counselor from the camp and your best man’s girlfriend will pull off amazing feats to transform a children’s day camp into a wedding venue while you are getting ready with your sisters and taking the first few pictures with your groom. Planning to do your own hair? Your wedding officiant will step in when your hands are too shaky and set you up with a lovely summer wedding ‘do. Need an awesome, unique surrey to travel around in with your groom? The camp director will pull it out of his shed the night before, and ask, “Oh, would you like to use this old thing?” while you make a little happy squeal. Feel like things could end still up to be a bit of a hot mess? Your photographer will manage to capture the most fun, beautiful, tender moments of a wonderful day, and convince you that you wouldn’t have changed a single thing.

Favorite thing about the wedding: Lizzie: Exchanging our vows during the ceremony. We both wrote our own and didn’t share them until we read them in front of our family and friends. I was far from composed, but it was an incredibly real and memorable moment. Also, seeing everything we had worked on come together, and our guests having a great time!

Neil: Is it bad if I don’t say my bride? No? Then softball.

Editor’s Note: We had this wedding on today’s calendar in advance of last week’s events and made the choice to keep it in, as planned. While the timing was unintentional, we’re glad we’re able to celebrate Boston in this way. Because while not actually a Boston wedding, Lizzie & Neil’s wedding is pretty damn Boston proud.

    I. Love. This.

I love your color palate and those red dresses, the cute little frog your guest is holding in the pool and the man juggling corn and you playing softball in heels and your handsome groom’s red shoes, but most of all I LOVE the giant smiles on your faces as you walk down your aisle as a married couple.

    Congratulations.

Edit: I just noticed the soundtrack. Amazing.

    THIS IS SO MUCH FUN.

A guest wide game of softball? I’d be so in.

    • Maddie

I would play the everloving sh*t out of a game of wedding softball.

My groom would probably end up getting beaned in the head and breaking his nose (or throwing his shoulder out of joint) and we’d wind up after-partying in the ER.

        • One More Sara

A friend of mine pulled the ultimate wedding fail at his bachelor party 2 weeks before the wedding. He fell off his bike, ended up in the ER DRESSED AS A NURSE. (He only needed a couple stitches, which he covered up by switching his part to the other side)

HA HA HA HA, i mean, I shouldn’t laugh at his pain, but I LOVE THAT.

A softball game at a wedding?
    FTFW.

    Congratulations!

Thanks for sharing this today! Such fun memories :)

This is fan-freaking-tastic. If we had another wedding, THIS is what I would want it to feel like.

    Congratulations!!!

  • Nicole Marie

I am in LOVE with this wedding. These pictures just radiate joy.

And this is possibly RADDEST EVER collection of non-dancing-related wedding celebration activities. I’m still in the “pre-engaged” phase, but I already have overwhelming anxiety over the fact my guy and I both HATE dancing and between the two of us have about as much rhythm and grace as a sloth in roller skates. Thank you for sharing this!!

    • DanEllie

“about as much rhythm and grace as a sloth in roller skates”
That is a fabulous description! Love it to no end :)

I was a guest at a wedding where we played lots of games (apples to apples was one of the favorites) after dinner. They had badmitten too, but the brides got in only one match before it started raining. The board games were the plan regardless of weather though.

Aaaaah!! This is totally my ghost ship wedding… love itttttttt

      Indeed.

  • Sheila

As someone with Boston roots, I have to offer up appreciation for the Citgo sign just above the “green monster.” Nice touch! (Go Sox!)

  • Abby Mae

I love EVERYTHING about this wedding! So beautiful and happy. I really hope my wedding next month feels a little like this. Congrats to both of you!

  • http://nerdycare.blogspot.com SelkieKel

Ah ha! I spied the Citgo sign and had my suspicions as to this wedding’s Boston-ness. Absolutely adorable all around. After last week, we can do with some extra smiles and warm fuzzies.

As a Bostonian, I vouch that this wedding does, in fact, reflect plenty that would make the city proud!

This wedding makes this former camp counselor’s heart go pitter patter!

Any wedding with s’mores is an absolute winner in my eyes! What a bright, cheerful wedding day. Congratulations~

You can’t see me right now but I am typing with my tongue because MY HANDS ARE TOO BUSY FLAILING WITH EXCITEMENT.

You had softball AND corn on the cob at your wedding??? I AM IN LOVE.

Can I ask for a follow up How They Did It post, specifically about the long-ish cocktail hour? Because I’d really like to do something like that, but, like, how did y’all manage it? What did you tell your guests to prepare them for such frivolity? Were you concerned that your guests wouldn’t want to just chill out and play games for a while?

  • Toni1835

This is one of the coolest weddings I’ve seen. What a fun day for everyone. I love the whole relaxed and playful vibe. Congrats!

Eeeeeeeee, look at you pitching in your wedding outfit! This day looks like an astounding amount of fun.

  • http://www.superfantastic.blogs.com Superfantastic

This looks like the most fun wedding ever. Swings! Smores! Wedding softball! But I am most excited about your song choice! I strongly considered it for my father-daughter dance. My dad used to call me Mouse when I was little and he’d sing that song to me. I had no idea there was Bruce Springsteen version.

  • VivaLuisa

Who is that dapper gentleman in the Twins cap? GO TWINS!

  • http://whataboutsara.com Sara

How freaking happy is this wedding?! Love it all.

  • Paranoid Libra

I am sorry you all can say that the soft ball game for the win, but effing MINI GOLF and SMORES!!!! FTW!!! and swimming???? It’s like a perfect second wedding for me and hubby especially the mini golf as we have a never ending tournament going….I am currently up 1 game.

So much happy, so much fun, and most importantly so much LOVE!!!!

  • Corrie

    Oh man. This is….

    …AMAZING.

Pitching a softball game in a wedding dress? BADASS. And the accompanying song totally made me feel like I was there with all of you. (Let’s be real – I WISH I could’ve been there with all of you!)

  • Jenna

I am loving on all of this. Beautifully simple…I’m sure it was the best day for the two of you and all present!

  • fermi

I seriously am in love with the wedding ceremony backdrop of ribbons, might steal!

  • Paige

This made me cry. So much joy! So many smiles! So much happiness and fun and being carefree and in love with life! Thank you for sharing!

  • Rachelle

Um, what?! Amazing. SUMMER CAMP WEDDING FTW!!!!!

  • Erin

THIS IS AMAZING! I second the call for a “How They Did It” post! Lizzie and Neil, are you selling any of your decorations?!? :) I LOVE everything about this!
