Matthew & Mathew

Matthew & Mathew | A Practical Wedding

When longtime reader Sara (who is APW’s resident SEO maven, but also invented the term wedding dropoutfell in love and had a babygot engagedand even threw Meg a book party in Denver) found out that we were accepting submissions for Pride, she stayed up all night interviewing her best friend Matthew and his husband Mathew. This is the result. It may just be the funniest, most touching thing we’ve ever published.

One sentence sum up of the wedding vibe: A ravishing evening with the who’s who of Denver’s elite… *giggles, tons of giggles* …and the Oxford Hotel had to throw our sheets out. Oxy Clean wasn’t gonna fix that.

The Info—Photographer: Bridgett Rodgers / Location: Denver, Colorado / Venue: The D&F ClocktowerSuits: Already owned, from Men’s Wearhouse / Sara’s Dress: Express / Food: Three Tomatoes Catering, who served delicious food and used the three-story space really well / DJ: Affinity for Music, who completely personalized the music, did not up charge, and also served as event managers

Other cool stuff we should know about: If you write your own vows, you better be prepared to do the embarrassing man-cry in front of people. I wasn’t sure what gay guys walk down the aisle to, so I sent a question to APW, but I didn’t hear back. So then I Googled “what gay people should walk down the aisle to” and I just got a ton of results that were dildos. So I just ordered a bunch of dildos. And named them after Hollywood starlets. But seriously, the resources for gay men getting married is sadly limited. Let’s fix that.

Favorite thing about the wedding: Having everybody we love in one room at the same time celebrating. This was just a few months after a bitter battle at our state legislature to legalize civil unions. Despite the ceremony not being “legal,” that didn’t matter. Nothing could repress our love and commitment to one another.

    Squeeeeeee!

  • Karen

Needed this today! C’mon Supreme Court!

  • Lindsay

All I can say is fabulous! Definitely looks like a great time! This is my favorite line: “Despite the ceremony not being “legal,” that didn’t matter. Nothing could repress our love and commitment to one another.” What matters is you love and are committed to one another, and no one can take that away from you.

“Matthew, Amazing Human Being & Mathew, Incredible Human Being”

CONGRATULATIONS you amazing and incredible human beings!

  • Emily

You guys are adorable. And that last photo is totally foreshadowing what’s about to happen to those hotel sheets. HA.

” she stayed up all night interviewing her best friend Matthew and his husband Mathew. This is the result. It may just be the funniest, most touching thing we’ve ever published.”

Where’s the interview? Or is that the wrong intro (for a Wordless Wedding)?

    • Maddie

She interviewed them with the wordless wedding questions. That’s why there are so many giggles.

    • Liz

I completely agree. Beautiful wedding! But she stayed up all night asking 3 questions? Funniest most touching thing you’ve ever published? I was expecting much more interview!

      • Maddie

Sorry to disappoint guys! I just wanted to convey that the answers were a result of a long late night of interviewing and giggling. Though I stand by the part where I think it’s one of the funnier more touching wordless weddings we’ve ever published!

        • Paranoid Libra

Seriously how is referencing dildos not funny?

      • meg

It’s a pretty strict rule that we only say awesome things on people’s wedding posts. Saying you ‘wanted more’ or what have you, is a bummer thing to say about someone’s wedding, even if you meant it in a nice way.

But mostly, I’d like to take a moment to point out that APW-ers are always clamoring for more content from guys. I literally don’t think we’ve EVER ran something from a guy where someone didn’t complain it wasn’t wordy enough, or they wished their was more nuance, or more political correctness. Not to be blunt but, if you want content from guys, you have to embrace what guys actually have to say. A lot of times it’s way less than us ladies.

        • Heather

Wanting more from the post (after the intro) is a comment about APW, not the wedding.

LOVE. love love. Wishing you nothing but happiness and joy! Congratulations!

Can we have an APW Supreme Court Coffee Club tomorrow morning to watch scotusblog together? I’m gonna need company.

    • M.E.

Yessssss. I have been glued to SCOTUSblog the last two days and now tomorrow morning I have to go to court of all places (for work, not trouble!) during the reading of the opinions! Ack! Will be there for coffee club in my mind. Hugs, everyone! And congrats M&M! I luuurrvvee the clock tower.

    • meg

We’re going to have that right after the decision. I can’t be monitoring a comment conversation while I’m waiting on the SCOTUS blog! I gotta FOCUS. But around 7:30, once I’ve had some emotions and typed out a few sentences, meet us here.

  • Crayfish Kate

I LOVE this! Everyone looks so happy & having the time of their lives.

Also, your clock tower venue looks AWESOME.

“Oxy Clean wasn’t going to fix that.” That’s my favorite line. Sounds much better than the honeymoon night I’m anticipating, which I am pretty certain we’ll spend sleep.

No truer words could be spoken about love!

“But seriously, the resources for gay men getting married is sadly limited. Let’s fix that.”

    YES PLEASE.

  • http://cloverandlace.com Helen

Yessss: “Despite the ceremony not being “legal,” that didn’t matter. Nothing could repress our love and commitment to one another.”

    This is exactly it. Exactly.

    Congratulations a thousand times. :)

  • Rachelle

They do weddings at D&F Tower?!?! How incredibly cool! It looks amazing and fun and meaningful.

And I’m going to totally agree that APW needs more gay male contributors! How do we rally some up?

  • Kayla

This is one of my favorite posts of all time.

I laughed in my head at “So I just ordered a bunch of dildos.” I damn near spit out my coffee at, “And named them after Hollywood starlets.” And then I cried at, “Nothing could repress our love and commitment to one another.” And adorable couple plus hilarity plus desk tears? Yes please.

    Congratulations to Matthew and Mathew!
