Emily & Spencer

Chickens! A slide! A human hamster wheel!

One sentence sum-up of the wedding vibe: Our wedding was an inter-generational party fueled on Wisconsin beer, farm-fresh food, and LOVE with a rooftop ceremony overlooking Capitol Square.

Favorite Thing About the wedding

Exchanging our vows in front of our family and friends will be a cherished memory. We laughed. We cried. We said everything we’ve always wanted to say and promised each other the best life ever.

Other Cool Stuff we should know about

The Madison Children’s Museum was the first and only venue we considered for our wedding. We loved that it has indoor and outdoor space with built-in entertainment. (Chickens! A slide! A human hamster wheel!) Most importantly, it’s a special place in our community where families spend time together, learning and playing! Our families traveled from Massachusetts and California to meet us in our lovely little city in the Midwest.

We spent the morning of our wedding day getting ready with our immediate family in the home we own together. Christy and James Tyler were a calming presence and totally went with the flow of our relaxed preparations, capturing everything from the day so beautifully. The food was perfectly fresh, a lot of it from the Farmer’s Market that day. We danced like crazy to Duke’s playlist featuring eighties and nineties indie and punk rock favorites. Our only regret is not eating more pie!

Wedding sister! I’m having it there (on the roof if it doesn’t rain) this coming June. First day of summer, actually. So exciting to see photos of a place I know and love. It looks like you had an absolute blast.

BTW, if you have any specific here’s what worked, here’s want didn’t, here’s what was tricky for the venue, please share. The step-up turn-around time is so tight. :)

    • Kayjayoh

I am seriously going to be staring at these pictures all day. We are also planning to do our ceremony on that wee hill with the tree, so I’m glad to see that works. Love love love this!

      • Emily

Oh yes. The hill totally works!

    • Jess

I love the Children’s Museum too! And Madison in general. I was happy to see the Farmer’s Market get its shout-out.

    • Emily

Hi Wedding Sister! Happy to share some tips: our day-of-coordinator Laura Ursin from Brides on a Budget and her staff were amazing with set-up, clean-up and making sure everything ran smoothly. I didn’t have to worry about a thing! So hiring her is my number one tip!

      • Kayjayoh

Ah. We are being a little more DIY, and a friend who is a professional stage manager will be our coordinator. :)

One more logistical question, if I may? About how many people did you have for the ceremonY? We are trying to get a feel for the space. The whole museum is huge enough to fit everyone and then some. The roof is a little more intimate. Thanks.

        • Emily

A stage manager friend would be perfect!

We had about 80 adults and 12 kids standing on the roof for cocktails and the ceremony.

          • Kayjayoh

            Thanks.

That headpiece! The necklace! The shoes! LOVE!

I LOVE all the color! Everyone looks so sunny and radiant. What a great venue, too. Thank you for sharing!

  • Rachel Kirby

What a beautiful wedding. I love your gorgeous dress and that hamster wheel! So cool. Looks like you all had such a fun time. Really enjoyed your photos. Thank you for sharing :-)

  • Claire

Looks super fun! Love how the photographs perfectly capture the joy, the moments and the emotions. Beautiful.

LOVE the flowers in your hair. So pretty!

Children’s Museum = Brilliant!! Adults should have more parties at children’s museums, even if there aren’t any children by age in the group. We’ve all got an inner child who needs out every now and then.

    • Meg Keene

      RIGHT?

    • Megan

I went to an adults-only night at this children’s museum in Madison. Running around the place and not having to let kids go first for different attractions? Awesome.

  • Christy Tyler

YAY!!! So happy to see Emily & Spencer’s day featured here!!! They are the sweetest and we had the best time spending their day with them!!

  • Alyssa M

Loving how the music choice totally changes the feel you get from the pictures! I think it really gives a better feel for how FUN your whole day must have been!

  • OnionCityResident

Oh my goodness, when Queen of Hearts came out I couldn’t stop watching the video for it on youtube, I love that this is the wedding soundtrack. Your photos capture the depth of your emotion so beautifully, congratulations!

    • Emily M

We used the song as our recessional. It was perfectly triumphant.

  • Andree K.

So many great colors (and his tie matched her bouquet!) I always love weddings where everyone is having so much fun. I think a human hamster wheel is a brilliant invention!

  • Apex Tent & Party

The wedding location is so unique and wonderful. Loved the fun and bright colors.
