Elisabeth and K’s Urban Clambake

Like so many other Saturdays, only better

Two sentence sum-up of the wedding vibe: We spent a perfect Saturday together, like so many other Saturdays, only better. I would do it a hundred times over again, even after all those wedding planning arguments, and I wouldn’t change a thing.

Other Cool Stuff We Should Know About

Our friends, unbeknownst to us, got up at the crack of dawn on our wedding day and trekked out to the ’burbs to meet two L.L.Bean employees who were waiting with a monogrammed canoe. They drove it back to the city, set it up at our reception, and took it back to my mom’s house later that night, as there’s no room in our city apartment. We adore it.

Favorite Thing About the Wedding

Getting ready together that morning at home, at our own leisurely pace, and then taking the Q train into Union Square in our finery to go to the Saturday farmers market and stroll over to the East Side, stopping for coffee and muffins, was just about the perfect way to prepare for the whirlwind.

Elisabeth is an MPH working in public health in New York City. Her old okcupid profile said she’s really good at: fixing socially awkward situations at parties, return trips to Ikea, whipping up excellent mac and cheese on camping trips, leaping into the ocean, being chronically late, and having Friday night adventures all over Brooklyn. In September 2013, she married her introverted, punctual K.

This is beautiful! You both look so happy, not to mention the snazzy outfits. Elisabeth, where did you get your two pairs of red shoes?

    • Elisabeth S.

Red shoes! God, I LOVE these two pairs of shoes. I tried on every pair of red patent leather shoes in existence, and finally found those over the summer. The flats are Vera Wang Footwear ‘Lillian’ Flat; the heels are Via Spiga Carmen Patent Leather Pumps.

The best wedding pictures are the ones where the love shines right off the frame. These are the BEST wedding pictures. Congratulations!

    • Elisabeth S.

Thank you! We owe much of it to our inimitable photographer Elizabeth Leitzell. It took us a while to find the right match and I am so glad we found her. She was both tireless and lowkey and just perfect for us.

  • KM

Yay! congratulations (again)! this looks like a perfect day.

  • js

You know what’s great about this? It IS just an ordinary day that any ordinary couple would have, only with SO much tangible love. K’s outfit is great! I’m also really curious about the tattoo on Elisabeth foot, if she wants to share. I love the pic of the two of you getting married at the courthouse with so many other couples waiting to do the same surrounding you. Great example of community, as was the whole wedding.

    • Elisabeth S.

Well, we actually got married at K’s church, not a courthouse. But the bee on my foot! I’m deathly allergic to bees, and during my Saturn Return (which, I’m not so into astrology but I am a total believer in Saturn Returning) I thought it was a good idea to get a scientific illustration of a bee tattooed on my foot, so that I could look down and remind myself not to be scared of what I can’t control. Um, one of those grand gestures that’s a lot better in theory.

  • Jenny

AWESOME! We also had a green canoe at out wedding. It served as a ice cooler for canned beer and soda!
Love all the pictures! What a great way to start my Friday!

  • Ella

Beautiful! You can really see the love between you too. And what a nice gesture from your friends!

I love that you went to the Union Square market — I used to love that when I lived in NYC. Congrats and best wishes to you both!!!! :) :)

  • emilyg25

Monogrammed canoe!!! This wedding is lovely. What a beautiful location for your ceremony. Congrats, you two!

    • Elisabeth S.

I feel like I should say that we are not actually merging our names and going by the Snears’ family. But our friends sure thought christening the boat the SS Snears was hilarity.

      • jashshea

Does anyone know anyone who did merge? Husb and I didn’t, but we have the super rad merged name, so I think we should have.

        • Elisabeth S.

Not quite a merged name, but I know a couple who met when they were working at a bakery, and now are the Bakers!

        • BreckW

janshea: We have a family friend who did a name meld (merge), and their new name (even though it combined a traditional Jewish and traditional Japanese name) totally blends in with un-melded names. I have been half-joking that my BF and I should combine names because ours would sound cool, too! He is not particularly on board, so we’ll see what happens.

Elisabeth: The Bakers is ADORABLE. Also, I love these photos of your wedding. Just like everyone else has said, you can absolutely feel all the love and happiness from the day radiating through :).

        • Catherine McK

I have friend who merged. There has been a lot of legal mumbo jumbo, so I’m not sure it is official official. They took all of the letters in their two names and came up with a new one.

Elisabeth, that canoe made me grin! My parents still have their “engagement canoe” ~40 years later.

        • Denzi

We haven’t merged yet, and may not (Spouse is fiercely protective of his last name), but our kids will have the merged name, and it is pretty awesome (and sounds like a legit name).

          • Elisabeth S.

Oh god the kids. What will we call the kids? Both of us are fiercely protective of our last names. I really have no idea!

        • vegankitchendiaries

My dude won’t be convinced unfortunately, but I’m totally jealous of ‘mergers’.

        • c

I know a Gupta and a Bacon who are now both Gupton.

Ohmygoodness, K’s faces. <3 How's she's adjusting your dress and the photo of the two you walking across the street, my heart nearly burst.

    • Elisabeth S.

I know. The greatest, right? That was actually one of the best parts of the day, seeing her so giddy (since you guys know that it was a long road of wedding planning to get here). At least a dozen people came up to me at the wedding and were like, “um, I didn’t even know K could smile that hard.”

  • http://www.devabydefinition.com/ Deva C.

This is such a gorgeous day! I love the pictures and your LOVE, oh my goodness, it just emanates from each frame.

  • http://www.wrightremedy.blogspot.com/ Addie

I have said it before but I’m going to say it again: K looks so so great in that suit and bow tie. Seriously. Wedding finery indeed!

*You looked great too Elisabeth. Obvs.

    • Elisabeth S.

:) I loved my outfit, but I REALLY loved that K got to wear a custom made outfit that totally worked for her, down to the socks, and in fact, is wearing her wedding shirt today. Just cause she can.

  • Granola

You fulfilled one of my wedding planning dreams – to go to the Union Square Farmers Market and pick out flowers!! So stoked and sweetly jealous that you guys did that. What a lovely memory you’ll have when you happen upon it in the future.

We got married in Ohio in October, so the NYC greenmarket wasn’t really an option. HOWEVER, a summer of walking through there got me enamored of Lisianthus, which we used a bunch of in our wedding and now I buy all summer whenever I can.

  • mimi

It’s so great to finally see the photographic evidence of the legally-binding clambake! You guys are adorable. Congrats again!

  • emfish

The dress, the cats, the canoe, and so much love. So inspiring — this is how I want my wedding to feel!

  • jashshea

Was there a single point that day where you weren’t grinning!? I LOVE everything.

    • Elisabeth S.

Honestly? I don’t think so! The day before was meltdown-city for me. My stomach hurt so much I thought I was about to give all the guests norovirus (sneak attack anxiety!), and I ended the rehearsal by sobbing “It’s not that I don’t want to marry you, I’m just feeling my feelings.” And then that morning I just woke up and was so. pumped.

  • Jacki

A monogrammed canoe! Love it. Thanks for sharing your wedding photos with us, loved seeing the clambake come to life after reading your journey this year – congratulations again Elisabeth and K! :)

  • wschuu

Aw wow, your wedding is lovely in such a sincere and natural way. You both look fantastic! Congrats!

  • http://andshelovesyou.com/ Lucy

You guys are adorable, and I want to steal your kitties (even though we have two of our own, they’re so cute!).

  • karyn_arden

My husband and I got up together on the morning of our wedding and had a couple hours together, just waking up and eating breakfast as always, before I had to go to the salon. That was one of my favourite parts of our day.

It’s so great to see these pictures. You and K look absolutely, stunningly happy. K’s face, looking at you, in the picture where you two are entering the ceremony is So Much Love, OMG LOVE. Congratulations on your legally binding clambake and wishing you the happiest of lives together to come!

    • Elisabeth S.

It was totally one of the best parts of the day! In fact I’m working on a longer piece about what worked and what didn’t, and really, the biggest, best thing we did was to get ready together. It infused our little apartment with such permanent joy.

  • Kirstin

Oh my gosh – the expressions in this are amazing. The love, the personality, the individual touches, the “you” in all of it. : )

I also immediately said, “Ooh, I want a picture with my cats! Jealous!”

  • Kayjayoh

    Monogrammed. Canoe.

    Your friends are the best.

    • Elisabeth S.

Dude! I KNOW! I still can’t get over it.

      • Kayjayoh

If I ever get a canoe of my own, I’m going to get a sail-converter kit for it. Because, I’ve seen sail-canoes, and they are awesome.

  • snowmentality

Y’all are the BEST. I adore your fashion choices — the “tying the bowtie” series of photos, that fabulous dress and fabulous shoes. Mostly, though, I adore how stinkin’ happy you look together!

  • MC

CATS!!! And so many other beautiful things!! You two do look so incredibly happy, it warms my heart.

  • Shiri

    Congrats, you guys!

Also: that shot of the actual ceremony, with the empty space all around you two and your loved ones on the side? I love it.

    • Meg Keene

So Elisabeth: I’m not wrong that I’ve seen a lot of nude performance art in your church, RIGHT?

      • Elisabeth S.

CORRECT, Meg. Were you at that feminist slam poetry performance in the late 90s…yes, I’m sure we were both there.

        • Liz

Yes! Danspace Project! I thought that place looked awfully familiar!

  • KEA1

Ohhhhhh so much love. And you and K did *both* of your outfits favors. What you’ve shared this year has been so touching and to see the photos of the actual day is incredible. %) Thank you so much!

  • LifeSheWrote

Love this! Love especially the look on your partner’s face as you’re both walking through the doorway. Makes my heart swell. Congratulations!

  • J. Driver

Super duper awesome. LOVE the canoe!! Congrats Elisabeth and K!

  • Shotgun Shirley

Ahhhh!! I’ve been looking forward to this wedding so much!! And I looooooooooooove it.

  • Beth R

This is lovely! Congrats to you both on continuing your awesome life together, but in a more legally permanent way!

  • HannahESmith

    Love everything about this.

  • JenClaireM

Oh, your dress is amazing! I totally covet it. Also, the two subway pictures of you guys are SO great. I mean, all the pictures are great, but those two are just perfectly New York.

You guys look so happy. And you have such amazing friends with the canoe – that’s one of the best gifts I’ve ever heard of!

  • http://theartofhintz.blogspot.com/ Jenniferjuniper

I’ve been looking forward to this post! Oh so happy to see the photos, you two are fantabulous and look so happy and congratulations!

It’s so different looking through the pictures after having read the posts leading up to it over the past year, I love it :)

  • Crayfish Kate

This gave me warm fuzzies all over the place! You & K look so ridiculously happy together, it’s grand :-) So very, very happy for the both of you!

Also, LOBSTERS AND CATS. That is all ;-)

  • Andree K.

A Maine license plate! Lobster! Canoes! As a Mainer this wedding really warmed me up (which I need because i live in Maine and there is like two feet of snow outside).

  • http://www.foreveryoungadult.com/ likepenguins

SO MANY THINGS. First, I’m SO GLAD we finally get to see this wedding! I feel like we were all a part of it, in a way. SECOND: is that the With Only a Wish dress from Modcloth? I’ve never seen it on an actual human before! IT IS SO CUTE AHH. Third: lobster. LOBSTER. I mean, it’s great, that whole life-commitment thing, but LOBSTAH.

  • Lorena Calabuig
