Other Cool Stuff We Should Know About

I’m fifty-seven and wildly in love, my children were my bridesmaid and bridesguy, gay marriage had just been relegalized in California, and happy wedded people popped up all over City Hall as though it were a garden and they the flowers.

Beautiful wedding, but I wanted to see the groom! Is he anonymous on purpose?

Also, you’re 57?! Dayuuum girl you look amazing!

    • Lisa

Yes, he’s a highly private person. And thank you:).

    • Grammar Warrior

Yeah its totally weird to not see the groom’s face. Private people probably shouldn’t be broadcasting their shit on the internet. And Meg’s blurry phoyto is awful.Wait, I mean this is so brave and honest!

      • ML

Just because Lisa feels comfortable sharing pictures of herself at her wedding does not mean her husband has to as well. Married couples can have individual preferences and opinions, you know. I think it’s lovely that APW was able to accommodate his wishes as well as give us a look at their gorgeous wedding.

      • Ash

Huh?? Why would you write that? Lisa’s been a part of this online community for a long time. If she wanted to share and her husband didn’t what’s the big deal? I didn’t even notice honestly… *blinded by Lisas beauty*!!

        this comment is so crabby.

      • Outside Bride

Expressing confusion about other people’s choices is OK, and sarcasm (or at least it’s smarter cousin irony) is even encouraged here, but this is a supportive place for those sharing their wedding and photos. That holds true for those making choices very different from what we would have made. Let’s keep it safe!

  • http://cafeaubride.blogspot.com/ Catherine

Okay so it’s just..it’s just insane how beautiful you are. I want to be you when I grow up so bad.
    And is that Meg??

    • http://cafeaubride.blogspot.com/ Catherine

      Oh OH and that cake!!

    • Meg Keene

Yup. Taking the one picture that’s kind of blurry (but happy). I was her wedding stage manager.

    • Lisa

      Yup. Who killed it, unsurprisingly:).

    • Lisa

I do have to point out that I don’t walk around looking like that all the time:).

      • Meg Keene

She looks pretty great all the time, though she’s not lying when she says she doesn’t wear her wedding dress most days. Though I probably would, if I owned it.

      • http://cafeaubride.blogspot.com/ Catherine

        sorry, I don’t believe you :)

      • http://brokensaucer.blogspot.com/ sera

I’ve seen pictures of you on your blog. I don’t believe you either. Although you do look AMAZING for your wedding day.

    • Jules

I went back through the photos, having totally neglected to notice that myself, and at first I thought you meant the one from very very far away where Meg is holding a pink folder on the outskirts. (Kind of like Where’s Waldo?)

This is all so gorgeous though – and you have one seriously pretty family.

  • Allie

There is no way you are 57. hot damn. I don’t even look that good at 25. And that dress? LOVE.

    • http://baltimorebeginner.wordpress.com abbeybecker

Yes, where is that dress from??

      • Alison O

Lisa’s Dress:Romona Keveza #293, a sample from Bridal Galleria, altered by Lucy’s in San Bruno

        • Meg Keene

Note: the alterations were all done under Lisa’s artistic eye. I couldn’t have pulled that off, I’ll tell you what. I advised a little bit, but I wasn’t sure till I saw it, and then DAYUM. You think you know what it looks like in photos, but it looked about 100 times more amazing in life. It just couldn’t be pinned down by something as mundane as film, I think. It was like a butterfly.

          • Lisa

Yeah, the advice was, What Would Helen Mirren Do? Win-win:). Here’s a link to a selfie of me working with the seamstress. http://amidprivilege.com/?p=20642 Basically it went like, “I need it shorter, um, let me hold up the skirt to show you, yeah, and less tulle, take a layer out, like that, and yeah, let’s make the layers irregular. OK that’s probably gonna be just right.” I think the other key was first shopping with my very artistic sister, and then not caring all that much.

          • http://karenmadrone.wordpress.com/ Karen

Now that will be my new mantra! Helen Mirren is kick-$ss! That would be amazing guidance for many areas of life.

          • Fiona

This little link led me to the world of your blog. lovely. I spent more time than I’d like to admit wandering around oo-ing and ahh-ing.

          • Lisa

I thank you very much. Admit all you’d like;).

  • Alyssa

UGH, I was okay until the picture of her daughter crying and then *I* started crying and it just went downhill from there.
    LOVELY wedding, Lisa, and congratulations!!!

    • Meg Keene

You should have been there in person. For awhile I couldn’t even remember what her daughter SAID, I could just remember her daughter (who is a force) and the UNCONTROLLABLE WEEPING. Omg, the toasts at that wedding.

      • Iflonida

Lisa’s daughter looks like a beautiful painting.

        • Lisa

Thank you. My father has always thought so, a Singer Sargent painting.

  • Alison O

    LOVE IT ALL

  • Laura C

Oh, man, that menu. Not that I can eat most of it, but I can dream.

Also, I want APW to stop running so many San Francisco city hall weddings, because they’re so gorgeous they make me jealous. And I don’t even like San Francisco!

    • scw

      allergies?

  • CGBlasts

Beautiful wedding! Wonderful how it all comes together when you aren’t dealing with other’s expectations. You looked beautiful. Day seems enchanting. Best Wishes for a long, happy union. God Bless.

  • Sarah E

Thanks for sharing, Lisa! Hearing some details on your blog, I was curious to see everything put together. What a beautiful family you have! Best wishes on many years with your husband :-)

    • Lisa

Thank you for reading the blog.:)

  • emilyg25

I have to say, I think it’s pretty groovy how you maintained your husband’s privacy in this post.

    • Meg Keene

THANK YOU ;) Says the one who took the marching orders. I think I’m allowed to say that he’s wonderful though. I think that doesn’t give the game away.

      • Lisa

And credit to Emilia, the photographer, who knew in advance that privacy would be required and who figured out that a lot of photos showing our backs might be a Very Good Thing:).

        • Meg Keene

Bless her. I think I found and used every one of them, and I feel like you kinda don’t even notice because it still tells the story.

I mean, you’re missing a lot of good ones, but I always think that’s the best way, keeping good stuff for yourself.

    • Winny the Elephant

Totally respect it but it does make me think he’s something really cool like a modern day Jack Ryan….

    • Alyssa M

My partner and his family are very sensitive about online images. I definitely think I’ll be showing this post to our friend/photographer…

  • Ally

SO MUCH gorgeous here – your children, your dress, flowers, Moon River, City Hall…and now I’m planning our 20 year vow renewal…

    • http://brokensaucer.blogspot.com/ sera

Oh! I missed that it was Moon River, which I love! I’m looking at this on a computer where I have no sound. silly workplaces.

  • Cathi

I can’t get over how great the photo of Lisa and son outside, shoes in hand, is. So great.

    • Meg Keene

It’s my favorite. Little boys and their mamas. (Well, big boys.) Lisa had just spilled red wine all over her dress, and she didn’t care.

  • Fiona

I can’t even handle that you’re 57. Not even a little bit. I wanna be you when I grow up.
I wondered also where the groom was! Thanks for sharing such a beautiful wedding AND honoring his privacy preferences.

  • Alynae

This is gorgeous! I am curious about the logistics since I noticed you had chairs for your guests. Did you rent one of the private locations for the ceremony? If so how many hours did you rent it for?

    • Lisa

Yes, we rented the North Gallery on the 4th floor, for an hour. They had no other weddings right before us, and none in the South Gallery, where we took wedding party shots before it all began. Meg will have more info on just when Sarah could start to set up the ceremony flowers. City Hall provided the chairs.

      • Alynae

Thank you so much! I am in love with City Hall as a venue but want something that allows time for guests and a ceremony. May I ask what time your ceremony was as well? Your pictures have the “feel” that makes it so special.

        • Lisa

Sure! The invitation was for 3, we started a little after that (if I remember correctly), we were done before 4, we took more pictures down on the main staircase, dinner started at 5. My husband and I took an Über car over to the restaurant alone together, it was one of my favorite times of the wedding. And thank you.

          • Alynae

I adore just how SF it is that you took Uber to dinner and that it provided an alone time for you two. This just got bookmarked as my wedding inspiration. Thank you for sharing it with us!

      • Meg Keene

To be honest, City Hall was pretty lax. They let us in really early to work on the flowers, because no one was getting married beforehand. They ACT like they’re going to be strict, but they are total softies.

  • Laura

THESE SHOES. Are everything I want in shoes. Why must they be so far outside of my budget???

  • Winny the Elephant

    I love her daughter’s dress

  • MisterEHolmes

That bridesmaid dress is SO best-of-Downton-Abbey! Jealous!

  • http://www.roseandruby.com/ Rose { Rose & Ruby Paper Co. }

    Beautiful in every way. x

  • Margi

This is so beautifully inspiring! I have been feeling so devastated after my break up and thinking that I will never find love again at the ripe age of 33! But to see that I can be madly in love and looking so fantastic at 57 gives me the strength not to give up! Thank you!

    • Lisa

Ah, hugs to you and and do not give up.

    • http://cuvikingadventures.blogspot.ca/ Jenny/Adventures Along the Way

      It gives me hope too…

  • http://www.asafemooring.blogspot.com/ Kirsty | A Safe Mooring

Your children are beautiful – your daughter looks like a painting. This is all just so lovely. I’m so happy for you, Lisa.

  • mamavalveeta03

Lisa, you look stunning! And so happy. Is that your lovely daughter as bridesmaid?

    • Lisa

Oh thank you! Yes, that’s my darling girl.

  • Hayley Tuller

I sincerely hope I look one bit that classy and foxy at 57. Amazing.

  • Erin

Beautiful, beautiful wedding! I have to ask, what kind of flowers are those on the cake? They look like the exact shade I have been searching for in the Pinterest stage of planning my bouquet.

    • Lisa

Oh boy I do not know! When I was inquiring to see if Sarah could tear herself away from her incredibly busy schedule, for a teeny wedding all the across the country, I told her she could do anything she wanted. Which I meant. All I cared about was no dusty miller, no succulents, no orchids, and I wanted a honking big bouquet.

  • Stella

Please please please let me look like this when I’m 57! Incredible!

  • Rowany

Holy crap those are some good genes in that family!

  • http://brokensaucer.blogspot.com/ sera

Oh my god this is so beautiful!!!!!!! You are so beautiful! And your children are so beautiful!!! And your dresses!!! both of them. I’m gushing, but you deserve it.

  • http://brokensaucer.blogspot.com/ sera

Um, also, where did your daughter get her dress? I am so in love with it! If I could get married again, I might wear that.

    • Lisa

:). Net a porter. By Lela Rose. And I gave it to her, as a bridesmaid’s present, along with the vintage angelskin coral earrings she is wearing. My husband and I gave my son his suit and tie.

  • Kristy

Gaaahhh, Lisa, I still can’t get over you in that dress! And all the photos of you and your boy and your girl. They about kill me. Well done Emilia-Jane on all the distance/back photos. They’re just as beautiful and poignant, and I know they make your husband happy. :) All the love in the world to you guys. xoxoxo

  • Susan Daniel

What a fabulous wedding this was! Thank you for sharing these additional photos. And yes, your daughter is like a painting and I respect your husband’s wish for privacy. Best wishes for a lifetime of happiness together. Susan D., Dallas

  • Jenny

I just scanned through this with Moon River as the soundtrack and I will admit that I got kind of misty eyed! Your re-marriage was lovely. Also I will second that you look great for being 57!

  • Chris Harmen

Congrats to you Lisa and to your husband. You look graceful and beautiful at your wedding. I love seeing couples who are so fun loving, happy and together they celebrate their little journeys of life.

Oh Lisa, how could I miss this (well with a newborn that needs constant attention, that’s how), Regardless, congratulations again, every photo shows the joy, and everyone here is so beautiful. I wish you, one more time all the love and happiness, to you and yours. You looked absolutely stunning, and your daughter… seems to have walked straight out of a Botticeli.

  • Shotgun Shirley

I’m so excited to see this; I love your blog. What a lovely post to wake up to (for me). ;-)

  • Class of 1980

Well, I’m a day late and a dollar short. Was so busy Monday, I missed this. STUNNING wedding!

  • Emily

Oh, Lisa, you have such lovely taste. I’m swooning over here.
