Sarah Gormley Photography: East Coast Wedding Photography

from Atlanta to D.C. to Brooklyn

by Meg Keene, Editor-In-Chief

Who: Sarah Gormley Photography

Where: From Atlanta (new home) to D.C. (former home), and all the way up to Brooklyn (why not?). Plus, everywhere in the U.S. is the same price, y’all.

Why: Well, I think the photos make it obvious.

Why Part II: Because Sarah is the person who will drop everything when you have to get married a second time because of the stupid “your first gay wedding wasn’t legal” thing, and then when the government shuts down and tries to ruin your wedding (again) she’ll just re-plan it for you in a second.

Price: $3,200 for ten hours, anywhere in the U.S. I know. You guessed double that.

Because She’s Just That Kind of Person.

Shortly after Sarah Gormley Photography started advertising with APW, my friend (and longtime APW contributor) Aly emailed me. DOMA had just been struck down, and years after their flashy sparkly big gay illegal Atlanta wedding, her partner and their two kids were heading up to D.C. for a legal ceremony. Cash was really tight, but she wanted recommendations of a good photographer who might be willing to work with them. “I want to do this right,” she said. So I emailed Sarah, just to see if she’d be willing to shoot their wedding for way less than her normal rate, on short notice… because no one should have to pay full price when they’re forced to get married AGAIN (amiright?). And not only did Sarah shoot their wedding, she re-planned it for them at the last minute when the government shut down. Because that’s who she is. And that’s why you want her at your wedding.

Because it’s not about edgy, it’s about following your heart.

In the last year, Sarah has learned a lot from photographing APW weddings (last minute, and pre-planned). This is what she told me:

When I first started my business and decided I wanted to target the more non-traditional wedding scene, I had this silly idea that I needed to somehow take the edgiest photos of the most alternative weddings on the planet in order to find myself a place within that niche. I tried rock and roll themed style shoots and googled “alternative wedding photography” daily. Then, in 2013, I started advertising with APW and somehow found myself so unexpectedly and overwhelmingly welcomed by the community there. Before I knew it, I had a full wedding calendar of mostly APW couples, and it wasn’t long until they completely transformed that silly notion of what appearances or stereotypes would make for a strong, creative wedding photo, or a loving, kind, down-to-earth wedding vibe. I’ve now worked with dozens of APW couples from all over the world, getting married up and down the East Coast. I’ve photographed all sorts of amazing, authentic, individual styles in churches, museums, backyards, courthouses, valleys, and mountaintops. APW couples have taught me that the “alternative” wedding scene has nothing to do with what’s edgy or hip right nowit’s about having the guts to follow your heart and do what feels real and right for you and your partner on your wedding day, regardless of what wedding traditions might tell you.

Her Prices Should be Double This But SHHHHH Don’t Tell Her:

The really good news about Sarah (other than you just saw her photos, and they KILL, and you just read her philosophy and EXACTLY) is that she is expanding from D.C. to Atlanta. And while she was at it, she decided she’d expand all the way up the East Coast too. And then, she decided to make a flat-rate price for travel for weddings, so she can come to you anywhere in the world you are getting married. I know, right? She thinks the logistics of planning a wedding can be overwhelming enough, and you shouldn’t have to manage her travel plans on top of everything else.

So in short, Sarah’s U.S. photography rate is $3,200 for ten hours of coverage, and $4,000 for international weddings. Why is her pricing so awesome, considering how crazy amazing her work is? Simple. She says, “It is and always will be a top priority of mine to continue booking small, intimate, backyard-ish style weddings.”

She wants her business to be about building a relationship with you and taking gorgeous, authentic pictures, not haggling over prices. Her pricing is simple so she can get down to the business she loves: taking your pictures.

So Get To It, Already.

Oh wow…so tempted for my wedding in Australia. With those prices it might actually be cheaper than hiring a good local photographer. How is that even possible?

I used Sarah for my wedding just a few weeks ago- she was flexible, friendly, and a great addition to our very small and casual day. She even helped by suggesting a food vendor for my wedding when I had been searching for a bit without any luck! Our engagement photos were beautiful and I am very excited to see how wonderful the wedding photos will be as well!
