When I was planning my own New England wedding, it felt like all the good wedding photography was on the West Coast. Sure, we had the super fancy high-end ballroom wedding photographers, and a brand new (at the time) crop of photographers shooting in what they called the photojournalistic style, but there wasn’t anyone making the kind of art I was seeing on all the wedding blogs, and even fewer doing it at a price point I could afford. So I was thrilled to find that Simone Gutkin of Archive Photography in Connecticut (and beyond!) is exactly the wedding photographer I was looking for when I got married: artistic, laid-back, and able to capture the essence of your wedding in a single photo. You’re welcome, New England!
Emotion First, Art Second
The first thing you notice about Simone’s portfolio is the emotion. The second thing is the art. And as a client, that’s exactly the way you want it to be. Says Simone:
My go with the flow attitude and unobtrusive style sets me apart from a lot of photographers in my area. I don’t bring a ton of lighting gear or pose you like angsty models or Photoshop you being chased by giant lizards or whatever. I’m mostly a fly on the wall—a very observant, five-foot-tall, camera-laden fly. I find that my laid-back approach really resonates with my clients. I never ask you to do anything that feels unnatural to you as a couple. But if you have a crazy idea, I’m totally down!
I also recently got engaged myself and I am smack dab in the middle of planning. I totally get it; wedding planning is a form of insanity, and if I had to do it more than once I’d probably pull all of my hair out. But I can’t tell you how relieved I am that I hired a photographer that I trust will be there for me. Trust is huge, and my main goal is always to make sure my clients know I have their best interest at heart. I always stand by the fact that the best photos come when you’re one hundred percent comfortable working with me.
You can tell from Archive’s images that Simone’s clients trust her enough to be themselves in front of the camera. And that creates moments like this:
And big ol’ grins like this:
And even a butt grab like this:
At last, Affordable Wedding Photography in New England (Hooray!)
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been asked in the past month for recommendations for New England wedding photographers whose prices start under $3,000. So let’s not hide the ball here. You can get all of Archive Photography’s talent starting at just $2,500, which includes six hours of coverage from Simone, a password protected gallery, and a USB of high-resolution images. Simone explains:
I don’t like to force my couples into packages they don’t want or have a need for. As add-ons I offer extra hours, another shooter, an engagement shoot, and albums. This way you get to pick exactly what you want and can try and stay within a tight budget.
Archive Photography is even offering a free engagement or day-in-the-life session (keep reading to find out what that’s about. It’s really, really rad) to any New England APW readers who book with Archive Photography. Not local and still want to work with Simone? You’re in luck! Instead of the free session, Simone is offering 15% off all weddings booked for 2015.
Day In The Life and Full-Service Elopements
I may have showed up for Archive Photography’s wedding photos, but I stayed for Simone’s side projects. One of the coolest parts of Archive Photography’s business model is what Simone calls “Day In The Life” photography. For a day in the life session, Simone will come to your home (or any other place of your choosing) and photograph you doing your thing for a few hours. She doesn’t interfere or direct; she just lets things play out with her as bystander. GUYS. I’ve been looking for someone to do a shoot like this with Michael and me. Please get on this. Simone says:
I really love showing the beauty in the everyday. What you think might be boring or mundane is actually really special. I feel so strongly about that.
Simone also just added full-service elopements to Archive Photography‘s list of services:
I’m really excited about a new part of my business I’m going to be introducing soon. My friend Matt, who’s a Justice of the Peace, and I will be offering all-encompassing packages for elopements that can be done ANYWHERE. In the woods, at a museum, anywhere you can imagine, right up until/if the cops show up!
Even though I live in California these days, my heart will always belong to New England. So I’m really excited to see artists like Archive Photography redefining what New England weddings can look and feel like (think less stuffy and more fun), without compromising the easy, laid-back attitude I’ve come to love about where I grew up. Now please excuse me while I go write half a dozen emails to friends telling them I’ve finally found the photographer that they were looking for. I’ll understand if you need to go do the same.
Don’t forget, Archive Photography is offering a free engagement shoot or Day in the Life shoot to any APW readers who book with her! Plus even if you’re not local, you can still receive a 15% discount off of your wedding.
