APW Happy Hour!

Here we are at last! Friday open thread!

My week has been a bit of a blur. The whole family got back from our whirlwind trip to Mom 2.0 on Sunday night. Thanks to the conference we got basically a Best Western price at our Ritz Carlton room with a balcony over the ocean. While we enjoyed the shit out of that amazing surprise, the best part of the trip was hands down two of our oldest friends meeting the kid (well, that and the fact that the Ritz paints their fire hydrants gold). The rest of the week has been a whirlwind of business meetings and writing. And! This weekend we get to take the baby to his first wedding! Our friends are having a bash in the mountains to celebrate their nuptials in the Netherlands, and Emily of Emily Takes Photos is shooting the whole thing on Instagram, as an experiment/our gift. Stay tuned. I predict crazy/awesome.

How was your week? It’s your open thread! Hop on it!

Highlights of APW this week

We started a little series about the options around kids and work, from a feminist perspective. Liz led with “The Work-From-Home Mom,” and Brandi followed with “The Stay-At-Home Parent.”

On the importance of community support for your marriage, and Episcopal The Book of Common Prayer wedding service.

An open thread on the ways our partners show us love. Over two hundred comments of goodness.

Intern Elisabeth’s post on plus-sized non-white wedding dress shopping at the mall. Hey, hey, subverting the dominant paradigm.

Honoring the family you have (not some family from central wedding casting) at your wedding.

And editors note: we’ve been including some motherhood content in the Reclaiming Wife mix of late, but we’re always looking for childless and child-free content to balance it all out. That said, we tend to write about a presence, not an absence, and none of us should have to define our lives against the prevalent cultural norm. The non women’s studies version of that sentence is just: a lot of the time, the best content from people who don’t have kids isn’t writing about not having kids (though we’re into that writing). It’s often just writing about who you are and what you’re doing, full stop. Regardless, please submit here. xo, M
