APW Happy Hour

Absinthe, gratitude, and giggles

APWNov-5778-PS

Hey APW,

I wrote this happy hour hella late this week (burning the midnight oil here) because instead of working last night, we had an APW staff celebration meal with many rounds of absinthe cocktails and fancy foods. Since I arrived a few weeks ago: Kate had a birthday, Maddie signed a bunch of really exciting partnerships for next year, Meg finished her book and launched our newsletter, and I… found a group of co-workers I actually enjoy hanging out with. It’s my second time out in the Bay to meet up with the crew for IRL coffee, brainstorms, and gossip sessions—and it just makes me count all my (glittering) lucky stars that I get to be part of this badass community. (On that note, everyone give yourselves a pat on the back for yesterday’s comments because I could not stop giggling.)

Being super grateful is a partial reflection of how I’ve learned to cope with tragedy. I was raised Muslim, and I’m first-generation Middle Eastern, so I’m keenly aware of how this week has been rough on those in my extended community. I spent Wednesday night having serious talks with photographers Helena & Laurent about how nobody can fix the world at large, and how overwhelming trying to help can feel sometimes. In the midst of violence and natural disasters, however, there are momentary silver linings. I’m reminded of the sharing economy and relief work that I was part of after Hurricane Sandy. As we fell deeper into whiskey-conversations, we admitted that a huge perk of working in the (non-WIC) wedding industry means that our job is supporting people’s celebrations of love, which feels a little bit like doing our part to spread joy. Because what’s a better weapon against hate—than a warm embrace?

On that note, if you’d like to join the magical #BTS world of APW, the deadline to apply to be a writing intern is this Sunday, so now is the time to make it happen!

And with that, APW, it’s your happy hour. Tell us how you handled this week! I wouldn’t mind more gifs in the comments either.

Cheers,
Najva
