Christina Richards Makes Your Artsy Wedding Photo Dreams Come True

Based in SF, but with free travel to NYC and Boston! (And she still shoots film, you guys.)

Who: Christina Richards Photography

Why: Nobody shoots like Christina Richards except Christina Richards. Maybe that’s why the APW staff consistently hires her for our family sessions and editorial shoots. With an artistic point of view that’s stayed strong and consistent for over a decade, Christina’s style is dreamy and emotional without ever being trendy (you don’t need to rely on trends when you’re this good). Plus Christina is one of the few wedding photographers still shooting medium format film (which, scroll down to the first photo below to find out why you want to get your hands on some of that.) But it’s not just about the photos. Working with Christina is basically the dream—she’s one of the calmest and kindest people I’ve ever met, and able to put even the most camera shy and awkward at ease. In short, if we could hire Christina to follow us around every day and document things in her singular artistic way, we would. But that would be weird.

Where/How Much: San Francisco, Boston, New York. How, you ask, can she shoot in all three? Magic. Ok, not magic. In reality, Christina is based in San Francisco but offers free travel to Boston and NYC. Rates start at $3800 for six hours of coverage and go up to $5675 for nine hours plus a $1300 print or album credit.

The tricky thing about hiring vendors, is you’re really hiring someone for who they’re going to be…a year from now. What’s their style going to look like in six months? Nine months? Eighteen months? Which is why consistency might be one of the finest qualities you can find in a wedding photographer. Christina Richards has been an APW sponsor since 2009 (aka almost the beginning.) In that time, we’ve seen more wedding trends come and go than we can count, but if there’s one thing we can always count on, it’s Christina’s stunning point of view. She explains:

I studied photography at SCAD (graduated in 2002) and spent many years working for fine art, commercial, and editorial photographers. At the same time, I was creating my own work, which has been published and shown in galleries. I started shooting weddings in 2009, and have been working with APWers ever since.

I’m fascinated by life’s fleeting, honest, and spontaneous moments. With my photography I work to distill these qualities into photographs that are beautiful and full of life. I hope to give my clients a collection of images that are true to the spirit of the day and capture the unexpected moments in-between.

I want people to feel confident in my ability as a photographer while also being the kind of person you would feel comfortable with at your wedding. Many of my clients are camera shy, but say that they ended up enjoying the picture-taking process in spite of that.

When it comes to Christina’s artistic approach to weddings, her philosophy is simple: your wedding photos should look and feel like real life. Maybe a tiny bit dreamier. Christina says:

I think your photographs should be beautiful, natural, and authentic. I want to blend into the background to capture genuine moments without pretense. With my photography I look for emotion, humor, light, joy, color, mood, and composition. What’s most important is that you feel like you can be yourself so I can create photographs that are beautiful and true to you. I hope to create photos that feel like memories so you can return to those moments and feelings for years to come.

Christina also brings a few rolls of medium format film to every wedding, and the resulting magic looks something like this:

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: if you’re searching the Bay Area or the East Coast for truly artistic, classic, seriously consistent wedding photography, Christina Richards can deliver it. She shoots with a vision that’s truly her own, and her ability to switch between digital and film makes her a rare talent in this industry. Plus, she just kind of loves you guys:

APW fosters a wonderful community of like minded individuals who know that their wedding can be whatever they want. There is no better client than that. APW weddings are hands down the most fun to photograph!

And if that isn’t reason enough to hire Christina, I don’t know what is. Except, well, the photos.
