This App Will Help You Slay Your Wedding Makeup

And possibly even help pay for it

Raise your hand if you’ve even begun to think about hair and makeup for your wedding. No takers? I feel you. What I was going to do with my face was basically the last thing on my mind in the midst of planning… everything else. But when it came time to actually knock it off my to-do list, I started to panic. What if it turned out awful? What if I didn’t look like myself? (Makeup artists who subscribe to the “more is more” philosophy, I’m looking at you.)

But you know what I’ve learned? First, there are a million ways to do your makeup and have it turn out awesome. You can do your own. Ask a friend. Hire a professional (who listens to your vision). Or wear none at all!

Second? The best insurance for avoiding this situation at your wedding isn’t fancy tools or products or the most expensive makeup artist. It’s research. It’s knowing what you like and don’t like. How do you find that out? Pictures. You look at lots and lots of pictures. And if you don’t even know where to begin, for that there is a new (free) app called BeauByte, which combines the best parts of Instagram, Tinder, and your local Sephora, minus the part where you have to put on pants. Here’s how it works:

First, set up your profile. You’ll be prompted to include details about your skin tone and coloring, and BeauByte will use that information to populate your feed with content that’s relevant to you. Once you’re set up, you can browse an Instagram-style feed of other users who have uploaded selfies of their favorite makeup looks.

But here’s where it gets awesome: underneath each photo is a series of products they used, which you can click on, and order directly from the app. You can also read reviews about the product, see other photos that feature the product, and find other products from that brand. And since it’s all user-created, the information comes from regular people like you and me, which means it’s legit, honest feedback.

But BeauByte isn’t just a shopping platform. It’s also basically a game, in which you can earn reward points to get free stuff. (I know, free stuff is my favorite too.) I had a chance to play with BeauByte before it launched this week, and was particularly fond of the Tinder-like aspect of the app, in which you can swipe left or right on looks you either do or don’t like. The more you interact with the app (either by swiping, or doing totally basic stuff like uploading a profile picture), the more points you get. I ended up with something like 750 points by the time I was done playing for half an hour. (Just a few more and I get free shipping on my first order, huzzah.)

And then, if you’re feeling brave, you can even upload your own pictures. (Maybe crowdsource your wedding makeup ideas?) If someone ends up buying a product from your post, you get cash money aka BeauBux. So basically, if you start using the app now, you could end up getting some of your wedding makeup free by the time your wedding rolls around. And just to get you started, BeauByte is offering $5 in free BeauBux when you sign up. Just click one of the links in this post and it’ll automatically apply to your account. (If prompted, use the code APWLAUNCH at setup.)

So if you’re just getting started figuring out this wedding thing, and want to give yourself a fun distraction for the next few months plus cross some research off your list, head to the app store and download BeauByte. Don’t forget to use the links in this post when you set up your account (or the code APWLAUNCH if prompted), and you’ll immediately get $5 to use toward a purchase. Because the last minute makeup panic? I don’t recommend it.

*BeauByte is currently only available for the iPhone, but keep an eye out for it on Android in early 2017!

what beauty stuff are you worried about for your wedding? how are you planning on tackling hair and makeup?
