Behind the Scenes at Brent & Jess

Where do fingerprint rings come from?

by Maddie Eisenhart, Chief Revenue Officer

Longtime APW sponsors Brent & Jess, makers of one-of-a-kind fingerprint and signature jewelry, are best known for their custom ring-making process and incredible customer service. Just ask the three hundred-plus testimonials on their website. But what you might not be aware of is just how much work goes into each ring Brent & Jess make (or heck, you might just be really curious about what happens on that workbench). There are now some other fingerprint jewelry makers out there, but Brent & Jess are the originals. In fact, their patented process is so secret, I can only tell you a little about it. (But you can get an idea of how it goes in this video below):

Here’s how it works with Brent & Jess:

  • First you decide on the style, metal, and details of the ring that you want. Brent & Jess make rings in just about every metal, white gold, yellow gold, rose gold (my favorite), platinum, palladium, and sterling. They can even customize a hammer, if that’s your thing.
  • Brent & Jess will give you a quote based on the specs of your email (prices start at just $195). Once that’s confirmed, they create a listing for you to place your custom order.
  • After placing your order, Brent & Jess send you a kit to make your fingerprints. You send your prints back to them, and they begin crafting for you!

Then it gets interesting. Jess says:

We have two types of ring making kits. One is for our patented process that puts your unique finger impression on the interior or exterior of the rings. This we are fairly secretive about. Basically it is a fun kit you do together and an easy craft project! We also have a graphite kit, which is made for people who want just a fingertip print on their ring (instead of the full wrap). We were concerned that the fingertip impression would wear faster over time, so we developed a one-of-a-kind process with a laser to make a fingerprint where we could control the depth of the print. Another reason we invested in the laser process was more and more people who had lost loved ones wanted a fingerprint ring, which we were unable to do with our kit. Now we are able to create one-of-a-kind pieces for these people as well.

Brent cares deeply about the personal nature of this work. He is intense when it comes to creating your one-of-a-kind ring. He labored for months perfecting the technique that earned him a patent. Our truly unique process is a very sculptural technique that produces a one-of-a-kind ring made from your very own unique fingers’ texture. Your loved one is literally wrapped around your finger.

Our rings are handmade by us, one at a time. We take extreme pride in our craft and experience, and we stand behind our products.

Why Fingerprints?

Co-founder Jess (one half of the husband and wife team behind Brent & Jess), wrote her thesis on Family History and Jewelry. So building a business around sentimental jewelry was a natural fit. In a recent interview with the Bangor Daily News, Jess said, “We’re hugely sentimental. For me, my children are my life, and my parents and grandparents. That’s where it stems from. I love to create stuff that has personal meaning.” (Jess’s husband Brent wears a ring featuring multiple fingerprints of their son to document his growth. Which is… way cooler than a yard stick and the wall, if you ask me.)

Meet The Team

When we first introduced you to Brent & Jess in 2011, it was just Brent and Jess behind the wheel. But as the company has expanded to work with even more awesome couples, they’ve added a team of whiz kids to help create their custom fingerprint rings.

As Master Jewelers with more than seventeen years experience, Brent and I were certainly qualified to begin crafting our rings in precious metals. But we soon realized it would be a whole lot more fun if we had a few more people around to help us out. These days, we have a great team here at Brent & Jess!

Brent Williams has seventeen years in the jewelry industry and never runs out of new ideas.
Jessica Williams runs the website and marketing end of the business. Her jewelry education and experience allow her a deep understanding of the product.
Madison organizes our materials and assembles the fingerprinting kits. She is quite the runner too!
Lynn is our lead in customer contact and our resident Texan. Together with Jess, she is on the front line of the Brent & Jess business. Lynn and Jess help people interested in working with Brent & Jess to design fingerprint wedding bands and other cherished objects.
Dani is our master model maker and laser diva. She is an excellent crafts person and has an amazing eye for detail. Brent and Dani are our mold makers they make the original molds that will be used in casting the pieces.
Adam and Brent, our expert metal smiths, finish the pieces and ensure that our high quality standards are met.
Chris is our production and quality assurance manager. He carefully examines each piece and makes sure that our customers will be thrilled when they open our beautifully packaged jewelry.

Our small team works together to help create wedding rings for one of the most important moments in our customers’ lives.

If you’ve been hanging around APW for a while, you already know that Brent & Jess’s custom fingerprint and signature rings are a stylish way to add extra sentiment to your wedding band or engagement ring. But getting your wedding rings through Brent & Jess also means supporting a small business run by passionate artisans and the team that supports them. You guys have helped make that happen. And they return the favor by continuing to be one of the best wedding businesses to work with, bar none.

Excellent vendor post, APW. I love the way you let us learn a little more about the vendors and how their businesses are growing with each following sponsor spot.

My husband and I got our rings from B&J. Lynn was our point of contact and was so, so patient as we figured out what we wanted. We love our decision to use Brent and Jess (and team) and our awesome wedding bands. Thanks guys!
