Emily Alt Photography In Michigan And Beyond

"I don't care about pin-worthy"

Emily Alt Photography | A Practical Wedding

by Maddie Eisenhart, Managing Editor

Sometimes I forget just how crazy the wedding industry really is. I’m usually reminded when I’m shooting a wedding and a coordinator asks me something like, “How do you want them to cut the cake for photos?” And I just kind of blink until I think to say something along the lines of, “It’s a cake! Just cut it!” The truth is, between the Pinterest explosion and the pressure to produce new content every day and all of those damn inspiration shoots being passed off as reality, it’s really easy to get caught up in the rat race of wedding photography and forget what the point of this job is to begin with (which is documenting your awesomeness, naturally). But for every wedding photographer trying to become a rockstar, there are photographers like Emily Alt Photography in Michigan (and beyond) who are on your side, focusing on things like authenticity and passion instead of perfection and pin-worthiness, and who are dedicated to bringing wedding photography back down to earth.

If Emily Alt Photography sounds familiar, it’s because Emily is the genius behind Rolling Elopements, which is what happens you mix a vintage airstream, a pair of photographers, and magic. (Side note: If you’re planning on being in any of the following cities later this year and are thinking of eloping, get in touch with Emily to learn more about her pop up airstream chapel. Because it sounds AWESOME.)

But I don’t want to talk to you about airstream elopements today. Today I want to let Emily talk to you about why your wedding shouldn’t be measured by its pin-worthiness. Because honestly, there are not enough people in this field saying these things, and boy do they ever need to be said. So without further ado, here is Emily herself:

I don’t know about you, but I have spent a LOT of time stressing out that my work isn’t “elegant” enough or “Pinterest-worthy enough” or “fancy” enough or, in other words “good” enough because it’s not the super epic work of pastels, and vintage style and sun flares….but then when I was pulling these photos tonight, I remembered that the thing I love most about what I do, and I think many of my clients resonate with, is capturing the total joy, bliss, happiness, excitement, passion and downright rockstar love that so many of my clients have with one another. As an artist, I shoot what I know and what I know is people having a shin-digging, foot stomping good time.

When I take the time to go through my favorite photos and consider what I believe are the best ones from weddings I shoot, time and time again, it’s the photo that shows the bride and her sister having a huge pre-ceremony laugh or the groom choking up at the alter, or the maid of honor and bride doing a shot of tequila right before walking down the aisle or that fabulous hug between the bride and her grandmother—those end up being my favorites. I never gravitate towards photographs that make my couples look angry, or overly serious, or pouty or model-like in a washed out field of flowers—that’s not real. And I shoot what’s real.

Pinterest puts a lot of pressure on us as photographers to produce totally epic images at all times and, when it really comes down to it, I work hard to capture the emotion, the joy, the passion, the excitement, the total giddiness that a couple feels on their day of love—I capture reality. That’s what I absolutely love about what I do—I get a chance to photograph what will be one of the most amazing days of a person’s life, and while it’s not always picture perfect beautiful, it is always real. Creating images that will live forever on a Pinterest board, maybe not so much, but real, true emotions are my forte. Shooting photos that illustrate a rockstar day of love are my forte. Shooting photos that are real is my forte. And that makes me really proud.

So let’s cut to the chase—you are looking for a photographer who gets you. You want someone to capture the fun moments, to stay out of your way, slam a glass of champagne with you before you walk down the aisle and maybe help you wrangle the ring bearer back into position. That’s me. You most likely do not want a photographer who will make you stand dramatically in front of a window in your gown or create a shot of you lying on a randomly placed couch in the middle of a washed out field (like seriously, why is there a Victorian couch in a field? Come ON!) I’m not going to force your wedding party into silly group shots all jumping into the air or make the groom put his coat on five times in a row to ensure we capture that “perfect shot”.

Nope. I trust that you’re beautiful exactly the way you are—naturally, without a lot of pomp and circumstances. I’ll make you laugh super hard with my sparkling personality and I’ll calm you down when you start to freak out. I’ll be with you from start to finish and you’ll start to feel like I’m a second (really adorable) appendage by the end of the day—but it will be so worth it. Bottom line: if you hire me, I’ll shoot the hell out of your wedding while capturing all those rad moments that you don’t realize are happening because you’re too busy shaking your booty on the dance floor. You’ll see kick ass photos that highlight you two as a couple. It will be awesome. I promise.

If I could make one wedding industry wish, it would be for more Emily Alts. It’s no secret that the wedding industry has lost touch with reality, but folks like Emily Alt are busting ass to bring it back. And I can tell you from experience, it makes all the difference on your wedding day when you have someone by your side who cares about how the day feels as much as it looks. So here’s the deal! Today isn’t just about how awesome Emily Alt Photography is (though frankly, that would be enough for me.) Because she loves the APW community and wants to give back for all you’ve done for her this year, Emily is offering $500 off to any APW couples that book a non-airstream wedding in 2013 or 2014. Emily’s prices normally start at $2,400 which makes this deal extra amazing. And if you are thinking of eloping and want something more outside the box than city hall, then click here to learn all about Rolling Elopements and the popup airstream chapel.  I have been waiting with bated breath to see what will come of all the magic Emily Alt Photography is creating this year, and I can’t wait to see what you guys make together.

I wasn’t able to book Emily for my wedding (my budget was just too tiny) and I’m still sad about it. She was so nice and I LOVE her philosophy. Best wishes for more, Emily!

(APW’ers, let me live vicariously through your beautiful photos!)

Ahhhhh!!!! Emily is shooting my Dec elopement! So excited. I forwarded her website to my mom and best friends (plus the boy and I drooled over photos) and they all said that they loved how Emily captured the emotion. You can look at a photo and know what everyone’s feeling. Love it and can’t wait.

EMILY ALT IS PHOTOGRAPHING OUR WEDDING NEXT YEAR AND SHE’S COMING IN AN AIRSTREAM WITH HER DOG (and husband, who probably is badass, but dogs take precedence in our family). <—- I've been wanting to shout that from the mountaintops for a few days, now. Thanks, APW, for giving me the opportunity to get that off my chest, and for letting me know that Emily exists in the first place. And thanks SO much Emily, who has been amazing and flexible and has promised to get all of my nerdy jokes on our wedding day. I'm really just so excited!

Well thanks a lot, A Practical Wedding…if that’s your real name. I was living in my wedding fog of having a ceremony in another city, where nobody we know lives, and expecting everyone to come there to celebrate our joy. I wasn’t noticing the insomnia, neck knots and panicky mother in terms of the logistics of this endeavor and then I found Emily on your blog. Oh sure, she’s all about being “nice” and “honest in her work” and believes that weddings should be “fun”. But what about the drama? The heartburn? The hair loss? I had heard about these so-called “fun weddings” but didn’t think they existed. I have still have the friends in therapy to prove it. Suddenly, Emily’s Pop Up Elopements came into our lives and everything made sense again. Not only is it totally unusual and unique, but it’s not some typical Vegas style elopement, you can still have the people you love the most with you, AND YOU DON’T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING BUT SHOW UP AND BE HAPPY. We talked about it for all of five minutes, thanked whatever universal vibe we needed to, and now we’re all signed up for a super cool wedding… Airstream Style. It’s an hour from where we live, no muss, no fuss, and it’s actually going to be fun. So thanks, APW. I don’t have wedding psychosis to deal with and I don’t know what to do with myself. Yay!
