West Coast: Your mind just got blown

by Meg Keene, CEO & Editor-In-Chief

Who: Lindsey Bolling Photography in Medford, Oregon

Where/How Much:

  • Local weddings (within a four-hour radius of Medford, Oregon, a.k.a., Portland): start at $2300
  • West Coast Weddings (Anywhere on the West Coast, plus Arizona and Nevada): $3300, includes flight and hotel, plus full day coverage
  • Weddings shot in black and white only: $1,500 for anyone. She really wants to do this, so take her up on it, someone!

Why: You know that feeling when you’ve just discovered something magical, and you find yourself taking sly glances around to see if anyone else has noticed this totally amazing thing, or if you can snatch it up real quick and make it yours? That’s the feeling you get looking at Lindsey Bolling’s photographs. (Start here, but also dive in on her website. Yes, look at the wedding stuff, but the family stuff will break your heart open, and the boudoir stuff will blow your mind.)

If you’re on the West Coast and looking for a professional wedding photographer, booking Lindsey Bolling might just be the most obvious choice you have yet to make for your wedding. One of my favorite things about this job is when someone’s work comes across my desk, and my mind is blown. The work is stunning, their prices are still affordable, and I know they are going to shoot so many APW weddings in the next few years, with magical results. There will be sequins, and bourbon, and sassy flower girls, and intimate elopements, and asymmetrical flower crowns, and weddings with no flowers at all, and confetti, and tear-jerking toasts, and smart ceremonies, and exploding joy, and things I can’t even imagine yet. And I just can’t wait to see the photos.

Better yet, Lindsey Bolling is an awesome person. She works part time in public health at WIC (not Wedding Industrial Complex WIC, but Women Infants and Children WIC. You know, the real one), and loves working with moms and children. She also really gets how you guys view weddings. She says, “APW readers come to this forum for much more than to find a photographer. They come to read about planning a wedding, gather thoughts and ideas. They are interested in more than just their wedding date. They aren’t looking for someone to just shoot their wedding but who are trying to find a photographer whom they believe would be a good fit for their own unique style. I like intentional people.” Lindsey is creating amazing images in part because her heart and head are in the right place. Here is more about how she works:

I believe that weddings are an amazing day. All of it. And sometimes, us photographers can photograph and photograph our lovely clients and forget that it’s a not a photo session. Not this gal. I am super invested in providing clients beautiful photographs but I firmly believe that photography should be an element of the day. I work with clients to look at the most important images to them and help them create a syllabus for the day. This way, I work with folks to get the super important photographs and slide away to get back to my storytelling.

I’m a storyteller. A majority of my work consists of lifestyle sessions where I follow babes, families, and even little four legged friends, and I simply document the movements of their lives. I use this approach with my wedding coverage. I look for moments and interactions. I’m literally stalking fun and emotional moments

My favorite work comes from weddings where the couples invite me to be a part of the wedding. Where we’ve met before and I’ve photographed their engagement session. Where I fly in a few days before to check out the scenery, learn the light, meet the important people prior to the wedding. Where they trust me to do my thing. So the nuts and bolts of both my style and business is about letting me in and being able to connect with people. All I ask is that you invite me to be a part of the day, and I’ll dance around you and your fine folks and we will make pretty photographs. I promise.

Hands down, I love that I am able to connect with people and that I am able to show people, through photographs, what they feel in their heart.

As is true for so many of the best wedding artists, come for the weddings, but stay for the side projects. Lindsey says,

This year I have focused my personal work on photographing inspiring women. I’ve photographed grandmothers, artists, teachers, dancers, yoga instructors, and mothers. It’s been rewarding listening to their lives and learning about what sustains them, what keeps them inspired. I have gathered in life that it’s best to surround yourself with people that motivate you, that are a few steps ahead of you. I’ve been able to photograph people who inspire me and have been able to provide images to these women that highlight their philosophies of life.

It’s a really rare thing to find someone whose work references all the best parts of wedding photography, and then to find out that they are in the building phase of their business and you can actually afford them (and that they’ll come to you even if you live in another state!). Lindsey Bolling is the real deal. Her talent is obvious, and her heart is in the right place. So much so, that I’ll just let her close this one out:

I love showing people how happy they are or how rad their wedding day was. I like putting all the pieces of the day together in album to show wedding folk just how much happened. It’s incredible how much love, mixed with a little chaos, a lot of laughs, and usually a miracle or two, all occurs on one day. One damn good day.

Lindsey is offering 15% off weddings booked from October-March 2014–2015 for APW readers, in addition to her grand ol’ discount for exclusive black and white weddings ($1500). Contact her now to make it happen!

    Ok these are gorgeous. Wow.

So, question: is the 15% discount just for weddings *occurring* from October ’14-March ’15, or weddings *booked* within that time frame?
