Melissa Blemur Photography In Jersey City And NYC

Where fashion photography meets weddings

by Maddie Eisenhart, Chief Revenue Officer

There are a lot of trends that come and go in wedding photography (hello super filtered weddings of yesteryear). Which means it’s a really rare thing to find someone who has been consistently kicking ass in their work for as long as Melissa Blemur Photography in New Jersey. A wedding photography veteran of eight years (y’all, eight years is unheard of in this game), Melissa Blemur combines fresh, unfiltered wedding photography with just enough of an edge, and the result is imagery that’s both vibrant and grounded, and so quintessentially New York it makes me ache for my old stomping grounds.

But don’t let me confuse consistent with boring here. Because Melissa Blemur Photography is anything but. Melissa’s photos have a clear fashion inspiration, and her portraiture is to die for. (Probably because Melissa is a trained portrait artist and professional retoucher. In any case, I can’t get enough of the Janelle Monae-inspired shot below.) Which means that not only do Melissa’s images feel like something out of a magazine, but they’re also not the standard hyper romantic wedding photos you see all the time these days.

So with all of her experience, how did Melissa end up in weddings? Here’s what she had to say:

One reason is that I get to be an editorial portrait photographer, a photojournalist, as well as a fashion/food/still-life/interior/sports photographer on any given wedding day. I’m aware I have to be ready for anything so the challenge is exciting and (pleasantly) nerve-wracking! The other part of the answer has everything to do with love. Someone very important to me once said, “Melissa, I’ll tell you the purpose of life—you don’t even need to look any further: the purpose of life is to love and to be loved.” A wedding is a sweet and grand demonstration of two people’s commitment to love forever no matter what life throws at them. I admire folks who make this pledge in front of a judge or priest and their family and friends without knowing what the future will bring—how crazy and beautiful is this act of getting married! And I’m the one who documents it to always share and remember! Any time I make someone effuse joy when they see themselves in their photographs, I believe I’m living out the purpose of life once shared with me: to show LOVE in all its quirky and beautiful shapes.

But Melissa doesn’t want to shoot any old weddings. Here is Melissa, on why she wants to work with you guys, specifically:

I always appreciate how the APW community is supportive, open, and friendly. Different traditions, cultures, experiences, and preferences are welcomed and celebrated here. Y’all are a cool, quirky, flawed, FLAWLESS, and funky bunch. In my business, I cherish the special relationships I’ve built with each client, who I treat as members of my family. Once you have booked a package, and I arrive on the day of your wedding or elopement, you will not see me constantly checking my watch. There is a much stronger possibility that you may find me lying on the ground to achieve a particular shot. Basically, there is very little I will not do to make sure you are happy with the visual story of your day. On the business side, this year I’m concentrating heavily on ways to create a better overall customer experience. The goal is to not just be your wedding photographer: I want to be your OFFICIAL photographer whom you call on to record your future life events and your family as it expands and grows. I get to watch and document people make each other blissfully happy for living—how cool is that?

Melissa’s prices start at $3,500 for full-day coverage, which includes a $200 credit to use toward digital files and/or print products to suit your needs (click here to see her full pricing). But she’s fully committed to working with couples who have a variety of budgets, so get in touch with her to work out a custom package that’s just right for you. (Oh, and she loves, loves, loves city hall weddings and elopements. Prices for intimate weddings start at $1,000.) And since Melissa is so excited to work with you guys, she’s giving away free wedding coverage to one lucky couple (and an engagement session to the runner up, plus other prizes). Head over here to learn more and submit your one-sentence love story. For anyone else getting married in 2014 (including elopements), Melissa Blemur Photography is offering $200 off any wedding package. Simply list APW as your referrer when contacting Melissa, and mention this post in the body of your contact form.

When you put it all together, Melissa Blemur Photography is the kind of wedding photographer who will give you images that stand the test of time, plus fun GIFs like the one above, all while being the kind of lady who will lie down in the middle of the dance floor to get the perfect shot. So get on that, New Yorkers, because you want this lady in your corner (and your life).
