Kateryn Silva Photography in Philadelphia, the Tri-State and New England

When we first introduced Philadelphia’s Kateryn Silva Photography to APW, I remember thinking her work was really good. Now, almost a year later, I’m delighted to have the opportunity to tell you that Kateryn has gone from really good to holy sh*t is she talented (as in, I actually want to commission her for a portrait and I hate having my photo taken). Plus with full coverage rates starting at $2500 and a flat travel rate throughout all of the Tri-State area plus New England, Kateryn Silva Photography makes today a good day to be getting married in the Northeast.

But let’s back up for a minute and talk about Kateryn herself (who prefers to be called Katch). Because after spending some time inside her portfolio, I was expecting that it was going to be the photos I’d want to talk to you guys about (which are blindingly good, and we’ll talk about those in a minute). Instead, I walked away from our email exchange feeling compelled to be friends with this delightful person. (Did you guys know that after she ran her last giveaway on the site, she changed the terms so she could give away three sessions instead of one? I mean…that’s how awesome this lady is.) There’s just so much honesty and passion behind Kateryn Silva Photography and such a deep appreciation for what you guys bring to the table that it makes me want to call her up and commission work from her, just to see what kind of magic she could make with my camera-averse self.

And part of the reason for that is because at her core Katch is one of you (she found APW while planning her own wedding, and then married her husband Kory last year), so she really gets what you want out of your wedding photography. She told me, “Everyone that has found me through APW has been so down to earth and real, and that’s the kind of love I want to capture. Stuff isn’t forced. Things, details, stuff…it isn’t done for the sake of having something pretty to submit to a blog after the wedding. Everything is done with a purpose, with meaning, with a real sentiment behind it. Whether its a simple thirty-guest wedding in a restaurant in the middle of the city, with no decor, no ‘details,’ but full of pure love; or a beautifully decorated barn wedding, with every DIY project, that shows all the love and devotion that went into creating it—its all real and honest. And that’s exactly where I want to be.” And because Katch loves your commitment to authenticity, that’s what she produces in her photos.

Which brings me to the photos themselves. You might remember Sarah & Casey’s wordless wedding from earlier today? That is the talent behind Kateryn Silva Photography. Her work is simultaneously whimsical and edgy, without being dark or ominous. And you can tell that the couples she works with are having a blast when she’s behind the camera.

But what I think makes Kateryn Silva Photography go from talented documentarian to full-fledged badass artist is that she combines that love of authentic emotion with a passion for constantly creating better art, using her personal work to make her professional work even better (and seriously, go look at her personal work right now. Because—stunning). Katch explains, “Personal projects are at the core of what I do. I’m a firm believer that if all you’re shooting is paid work you’re not doing it right. Shooting work is great, don’t get me wrong. I love what I do. But I believe that the best way for me to grow and evolve, as a photographer and as an artist, is to create something for myself, entirely dependent on me and my creative vision, with no other input. Every project is a learning experience—about composition, about light, about myself, about emotions, about aesthetics, about anything.” And trust me when I tell you that you want this. Because a photographer who works herself to the bone to further herself creatively is going to turn around and use that creativity to make your photos awesome and thoughtful and maybe even a little bit edgy. Which is exactly what Katch does.

But the best news is that Kateryn Silva Photography is now available to shoot your wedding all over the greater Northeast. (Yay!) Katch is offering a flat $400 travel rate to New York State and New England (and for all of you New Englanders, Katch and her husband Kory are avid climbers and general outdoorsy types, and I know there are plenty of you planning your mountain/camping/outdoor/woodsy weddings right now who would love that kind of energy there.) Katch’s regular rates start at just $2,500 and travel is otherwise free within Philadelphia (and its surrounding areas), New York City, and anywhere in between. Plus, in a few days Katch is making a huge announcement on her blog that you won’t want to miss. (Seriously, if you’re getting married, mark your calendar for February 25th and don’t forget to check it out. You won’t want to miss it.)

And on top of all that, I’m really excited to let you know that Katch is also branching out into boudoir photography, a medium she’s hoping to change from the standard Maxim fare (and succeeding if you ask me). The work she’s produced so far has been stunning, but it’s what she has to say about it that really caught me. She wrote about a recent self-portrait boudoir session. (Yes you read that right. The photo above is actually of Katch practicing on herself first so she can figure out what angles work best for clients.) She said, “I wanted the images to be more about being confident, stylish, and comfortable. Less about showing skin in lingerie, and more about documenting the mood of beauty and confidence without affecting it. I also wanted it to have a tiny flair of fashion. A semi-boudoir shoot.” So for those of you who have been looking for artistic boudoir photos that maybe don’t exactly look like boudoir, I can’t wait to see what you and Katch would cook up.

At the end of the day, what I think makes Kateryn Silva Photography so special is that her work isn’t just good. It’s that if you hire her, you’re inevitably getting even better work than what you’re looking at now. Which is a damn good return on investment. So go! I encourage you to get lost in Katch’s blog. (I didn’t even have time to tell you about the adorable self-portraits she does of herself and her husband, but suffice to say I spent a few hours this week fully immersed in the sweetness.) Go get lost in her portfolio. And then do yourself a favor and hire her. Heck, I think I might even do the same next time I’m back East.

Right?! Also, that’s Katch herself in a self-portrait with her husband. I mean…if I could take photos that cool of MYSELF. My ego would be the size of a house.

  • Nice photos. Wonder what’s the cat is doing there. Also loved the million dollar smile on the bride’s face (second picture from the top).

Can I just say an enormous AMEN to this advertisement. My fiance David and I (first picture, whoot!) received one of her amazingly generous giveaway shoots, and I seriously tear up whenever I think about it. Katch is such an amazing person – she and Kory even offered to show us around Philadelphia if we were ever in the city! The entire time she treated us like friends and never allowed us to feel guilty for accepting such a priceless gift, constantly repeating that she was thrilled to add these photos to her portfolio and happy to have met us. I can’t say enough about how incredible she was to work with.
NOW, as for her images – they certainly speak for themselves. But I can add that the entire disk of images she sent us are equally stunning. These are photos you can hang on your wall – this is art. We are actually planning to order large prints of some of the photos from our shoot of the scenery without us in them, just because they are beautiful. I can’t believe what a treasure we have – actual art celebrating our love. Even for those already married or not planning a wedding, I urge you to ask Katch to photograph you together – this is absolutely the most priceless keepsake David and I have.

    • @Hannah, thanks so much for the kind words my friend. It really means a lot to me. It was really great to photograph you and David, you were so grateful, and so in love, it kept reminding me why I chose to do that in the first place.

And seriously. Come to Philly. We’ll show you a good time :)

Katch is really great. She really makes you feel at ease. And when our engagement pictures came back we really did look like we were at ease!

  • Great photos, the second to last in the window light is stunning.
