Why do you want to work with APW Couples?
I want to work with couples that I want to be friends with as well. I also want to work with couples who hire me because they like me as much as they like my work. You can go on any wedding website and find a photographer with a million great photos, but your personalities may clash. If your personalities mesh, it will make your photos and your wedding experience that much better. That’s what I hope to do, offer you some awesome photos and a fun time, and maybe, when it’s all over and you’re married, maybe we can hang out and watch geeky movies.
Describe your artistic approach to weddings?
I like to call my artistic approach to weddings the ‘please don’t run me over approach’, as in, I may be laying on the floor (or in the middle of the street) to get the photo I’m after, and I may look like an idiot doing it, but trust me, you’re gonna love it. Don’t worry, I won’t do that during the ceremony, just other random times throughout the day. :) I also call it the ‘photo ninja approach’ because I am all about true to life candid moments and expressions that I couldn’t catch on camera if you saw me snapping away. I’ll get all kinds of photos that you didn’t even notice that I was there for. I want to be able to surprise you with photos that will make you laugh and/or cry when you see the small, but very real moments of the day. I will compose some shots throughout the day, like during the family formals and couple portraits, but I want you to be able to enjoy your day. I’m there to record it, not turn it into an all day photo session.
I studied fine art photography in undergrad, later working at a local newspaper before beginning my career in wedding photography, so I’m well rounded in both composed and candid photography. Having been trained learning film, I have a great appreciation for getting the image right in camera rather than relying on Photoshop to fix an image. My editing style is clean and colorful, nothing outlandish. I believe that editing should simply enhance what the photo already is, giving it just a little something extra.
What are your non-work-related hobbies?
My non-work-related hobbies include planning extensive worldwide travel with the goal of traveling to every continent, being a proud geek (yes I love Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and am a recent convert to the world of Marvel), playing with my Polaroid land camera, trying to beat my husband Matt at board games, collecting big, colorful earrings, spending time talking and drinking coffee with my friends and cuddling with my kitties. One of my life goals is to take a cross country road trip with my friends and only travel the back roads. I don’t care how long it takes and I don’t know how I’ll fund it, but it doesn’t matter, this trip needs to happen.
What’s your favorite book?
Harry Potter! I have no shame, it’s awesome. Other than that I’d have to say ‘Blue Like Jazz’ by Donald Miller. It’s one of the most honestly written books I have ever read and one of the few that I have read multiple times.
What’s your favorite movie?
Kid movie: Despicable Me. I don’t care what you say, the minions are hilarious and crack me up every time. Grown up movie: Lord of the Rings.
However, I’m much more of a tv show kind of girl rather than a movie girl. I’d rather Netflix an entire season of Gilmore Girls, The West Wing, Downton Abbey or The Big Bang Theory any day.
If you could have a one minute dance party at your desk, what song would you pick?
I can’t resist a chance to dance to Gangnam Style. My one minute dance parties are largely determined by my mood so the song choice varies from day to day, but the dancing is going to happen no matter what.
