Why do you want to work with APW Couples?

I love photographing weddings, but I really love marriage. There is something so hopeful and beautiful about promising to love someone for the entire rest of your lives, through changes you can’t even fathom yet. That amount of faith in another person, and in love in general, blows me away every single time, at every single wedding.

The reason I love APW is because it considers this hugely important aspect of a wedding that is so often overlooked by the rest of the wedding magazines and blogs out there. I love that working with APW couples means working with people who are planning weddings that put their marriage and relationship at the forefront – both because these tend to be “my people” and also because they tend to plan the kinds of weddings I love to photograph most: fun, and personal and filled with emotion.

Describe your artistic approach to weddings?

I am an observer by nature. At weddings I am always on the watch for emotion, connections, and small moments that are sometimes are barely noticed during such a high-intensity day. Being as unobtrusive as possible helps me catch these genuine moments as they unfold.
I want even your portraits to reflect your relationship and capture real and heartfelt interaction. I do give direction during portraits to ensure you are looking amazing, but I’m never going to set you up in poses that feel unnatural to you, or dictate your wedding timeline.

Finally, I shoot with permanence in mind—It’s important to me that my clients’ wedding photos are something they can look to for the rest of their lives and remember how they felt on the day they promised to spend their lives together. To that end, I love artful and clean compositions, natural portraits, and photographs focused on emotion-filled moments.

What are your non-work-related hobbies?

I read all the time and listen to a pretty obscene amount of NPR. I love trying out vegetarian recipes, hosting backyard parties and impromptu dinners, trying to teach my dog to behave (tricks are nowhere in sight at this point), and spontaneously road-tripping with my two adorable kids and husband whenever possible.

What’s your favorite book?

There is no way to pick just one. But I am a regular re-reader of Mrs. Dalloway, the Anne of Green Gables series, and The Time Travelers Wife. I’ll also read anything written by Dave Eggers.

What’s your favorite movie?

It has been Untamed Heart since I was 14 years old. I try to pick more grown up favorites, but it’s the only one I can watch over and over again and love the same every time.

If you could have a one minute dance party at your desk, what song would you pick?

American Girl by Tom Petty. I’m a total sucker for classic rock these days.
