APW couples are totally diverse, and they have weddings just as unique as they are. But overall, they understand that marriage is the most important part of a wedding. Couples who have that kind of attitude inspire us, keep us grounded in exactly what’s important, and continually make us better at our job.
Describe your artistic approach to weddings?
Our photos and videos focus on people, emotions and moments. We think details are lovely, but it’s the images of the people you love that will matter most as time passes.
We firmly believe weddings are not photo shoots. We want couples to be fully present on their wedding day. They should be focused on enjoying the start of their marriage while we concentrate on everything visual. Most of the time, we will be documenting events as they unfold, but we will make small changes and offer direction to help everyone look their best when it’s needed.
We got married two days after Hurricane Sandy, and had to re-plan the wedding in one day, which gave us an even deeper understanding of why weddings matter so much. We feel privileged to document celebrations of love, in whatever form they take. Whether people are having a traditional wedding, an offbeat wedding, a tiny wedding, an elopement, or something in between, we are excited to be a part of it.
What are your non-work-related hobbies?
Chris: When I’m not shooting weddings, I’m the Creative Director and writer at Dark Ink Pictures, a comic company I co-own with Sarah. Since 2011, I’ve written ten comic books that range from horror to sci-fi to children’s stories. Some other random things I love in no particular order: my wife; our cats; “Buffy the Vampire Slayer;” comics; cake; horror films; science fiction; chocolate mousse; and Batman.
Sarah: When we’re not shooting weddings, making comic books, or traveling the country for either, Chris and I still want to hang out together. (Crazy! Right? This is indication number 8 million that I married the right man.) We explore New York on long walks, make up ridiculous stories for our entertainment, watch lots of movies, make insanely good food, and cuddle our three cats, Pip, Izzy and Oliver.
What’s your favorite book?
Sarah: “The Time Traveler’s Wife” by Audrey Niffenegger
What’s your favorite movie?
Sarah: Arsenic and Old Lace, followed closely by “Some Like it Hot.”
If you could have a one minute dance party at your desk, what song would you pick?
Sarah: “These Boots Are Made For Walkin’” by Nancy Sinatra or “Out Tonight” from Rent.
Chris: “I have no idea how Sarah can pick her favorites of anything so easily. There’s so much I love, and I’d need to make lots of top ten lists to cover it all!”
Explain your travel policy.
We live in New York City, but we are happy to travel anywhere in the lower 48 to take photos. For weddings further than 60 miles from Manhattan, our rate is $3900, with no additional travel fees.
