350 of the Best Wedding Songs to Pick from When You Get Married

From modern to religious to booty shakin'

by Meg Keene, CEO & Editor-In-Chief

Back when I got married, in the dusty distant past of 2009, if you were picking the best wedding songs for your reception, you were probably also wrangling an iPod, and wondering if you were going to be able to make a bumpin’ reception happen without a high-priced DJ. Thank goodness, in the intervening handful of years, we’ve ditched iPods, moved to iPhones, and some pretty awesome DJ apps have been launched, making “putting together your wedding playlist” the most fun item on tons of couples’ wedding to-do lists.

best songs to play at your wedding

But whether or not you’re having a professional DJ, or a self-selected shuffle, we’ve compiled a massive (and I do mean massive) list of wedding songs to help you pick music for every key moment of your wedding, without digging through a million posts and a zillion comments to find the best stuff. We’ve covered ceremony music from secular to modern, reception entrance songs, slow and sweet and bump and grind first dance songs, music for dancing with your Dad (or Mama), and power ballads to close out the night. Oh, and duh, we covered music to get ready to, with a side of feminism.

We hope this list of best wedding songs helps you pick music without breaking a sweat. Because that should be saved for the dance floor. (#rimshot)

Oh man….AC/DC “You shook me all night long”. The face on my mother was priceless! :)

Also, after the ceremony my husband and I walked into “I believe in a thing called love” by the Darkness. It was awesome!

  • Danielle

    SO MANY GOOD SONGS!

For our ceremony we walked down the aisle to Dolly Parton’s “Coat of Many Colors” (it’s one of my hubby’s favorite songs) and “The Circle Game” by Joni Mitchell: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5HXT0bn7QY

Our first dance was to “Halo” by Beyonce and my parent dance was Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World”. I love them all and feel good just thinking about it <3

  • Laura C

My processional song: Dixie Chicks “Easy Silence.” My husband’s processional song: the Sherlock theme. Also we sent his grandparents in to the West Wing theme.

We had a DJ but did our own pre-ceremony and cocktail hour mixes — probably too many songs to list but I am totally putting them on. They weren’t all very weddingy, though. We also used those lists to get in favorite songs that said something about us that we wanted out there. He chose Jackson Browne’s “The Pretender,” which is a song that was much in his head as he was moving from a temp to a guy with a career and from a serial monogamist to realizing he was in a serious relationship with me, and the Talking Heads “Nothing But Flowers,” which is one of his brother’s favorites. I chose the Dropkick Murphys “Worker’s Song” and Bruce Springsteen’s “Death to My Hometown” and Tracy Chapman’s “Talkin’ Bout a Revolution” because I wanted to foreground politics. These days if we’re listening to music together, overwhelming chance it’s those two playlists.

    • Kat

I would never have considered the west wing theme for any aspect of a wedding but OHMYGOSH that’s genius. Love love love.

  • Austyntatious

I would just like to say that having my bridal party walk down to “Yuh Love” by Vybz Kartel was awesome because a) it was kinda vengeance for my ex pretty much ruining an entire genre of music for me and b) it quickly let people know the fun, comfortable, personal ceremony/day they were in store for. gonna go dance in my seat at work now. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wQLSsLVlt4

Dad dance: Dan Fogelberg, Leader of the Band

ETA: a little on the nose but makes me tear up just thinking about it

  • Kayjayoh

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I really *really* don’t think “Abide With Me” is a wedding hymn. Funeral hymn? Sure. But while marriage is about “till death do we part” and while I truly love that hymn, I would be very taken aback to hear it at a wedding.

  • Amanda

Ah! Just this morning we confirmed our wedding ceremony music with our pianist! What perfect timing

Processional: Bach’s Prelude and Fugue No. 1 in C Major (so, very close to what you suggested!)
Recessional: Bill Evans Waltz for Debbie (just the melody line)

First Dance: Nat King Cole’s Too Old to Dream. (A very personal song to us). But our wedding band is a french pop string sextet, so it will be in French…

  • Jess

I’d just like to say that I appreciate having a list w/ links rather than the imbedded vevo videos like a lot of the last playlist articles. This was infinitely easier to read and enjoy.

Aside from that, this list is SO GOOD.

    • Eenie

I don’t think I’ve ever successfully gotten the embedded videos to load!

    • LadyWoman

I got married a couple years back and I’m keeping this page for later just to build out my every day playlist!

      • Jess

Oh, for sure. I definitely went in today and expanded my ever growing, “I’m a BossBitch” Playlist.

  • Rebekah

For a while APW was creating playable playlists we could listen to directly from the post or from whatever app’s website it was. Any chance APW has a spotify account or something like it where all the great new playlists could be found?

    • Glad you enjoyed them! We’re switching over to making youtube playlists so maybe we’ll make one of those for this… but obviously we’ll need a minute!

  • Ashlah

We had a couple friends play Daniel Johnston’s True Love Will Find You In The End on violin for our processional. Oof, just listening to it now makes me tear up.

Unbeknownst to us, my dad requested Come As You Are by Nirvana as the last song of the night (we hadn’t planned a final song). I don’t think it’s one I ever would have considered, but it worked really well for our crowd!

  • Kelsey

Unexpected sneaker hit of the amazing dance party that was our reception: Gangam Style. I would have never requested it, and if it had been suggested, I might have actually scoffed at wasting one of my precious reception songs on that bad boy but every. single. person. there danced to that song. Vigorously. I was like crushed into a sweaty, bouncing moshpit for the whole time, and it’s one of my favorite wedding memories if for nothing else than being so entirely unexpected.

  • Sara

My group of friends LOVE ‘Gettin’ Jiggy with it’. It will always make us go on the dance floor. Also anything Britney or some sort of boy band.

  • LadyWoman

I walked in to “So Are You To Me” by Eastmountainsouth. I knew for YEARS (way before meeting my husband) I wanted that in my wedding. Honest confession: first time I heard it was on the ABC Family Channel movie “Lucky 7” where it was played…at a wedding. I am unashamed. It’s a friggin’ gorgeous song.

My favorite reception song was at a friend’s wedding. She loves Disney and “Kiss the Girl” came on. Her husband was in another room at the moment and a couple of us college buds ran out, dragged him back in, and made them stand in the middle while we danced and sang around them like we were the animals in the scene from the movie. It was delightful.

In my pre-engaged state, I kind of daydream about dancing with my dad/ parents to “Don’t you worry about a thing” — which is a song I grew up to him humming.

My wife and I danced to Like My Mother Does with our moms. Then I danced to Vienna with my dad(He LOVES Billy Joel) and she danced to Wind Beneath my Wings with her older brother.

Can anyone explain to me why the Pretenders song “Message of Love” is not played at EVERY WEDDING? It’s so perfect! Could be a recessional for a casual/secular wedding, an entering-the-reception song, or a “everybody get on the dance floor” song. That and “One Day Like This” by Elbow (which I think is probably kind of cliche in the UK but less well-known in the US) are the two that are definitely on my list.

I don’t understand why people use the same songs others use then call it “their song”. It’s not “your song”. Everything else in the wedding is customized to fit you but the one thing that truly lasts you just settle for whatever?

Have a song written and recorded that is custom and tells YOUR story. Sheesh.

How about songs/artist that haven’t been played to death at every other wedding because they were hit songs. Try something unique for you.
