Yay New York: DJ, Event Space, & Regional Parties!

by Meg Keene, CEO & Editor-In-Chief

It’s Wednesday, which is the day we’re going to give you updates on Yay New York. We figure that will make summer Wednesdays stuck behind a desk a little more fun. So let’s do this thing.

First off, we’re delighted to announce that DJ Whitney Day will be making us dance our faces off at Yay New York. Whitney is a young up and coming DJ, with a degree in philosophy (perfect), who works at blurring the lines between the LGBTQ scene and the straight scene (even better). After yesterdays talk of going dancing, those of you coming to the Mass Reception for Marriage Equality should be primed and ready for this awesomeness.

Next up: the party will be held in at 320 Studios, a beautiful loft space in Manhattan’s fashion district. There will be booze, excellent decorations, and the best community in the world (if you ask me…)

During the day, the weddings will be held on a beautiful terrace with a a view of the city and the river, with a small reception for family and friends inside.

Here are dates that you need to know:

  • Next Wednesday, July 27: tickets for Yay New York (party and LAMBDA Legal fundraiser) go on sale. You’re going to be there, right New Yorkers? Me too! (Eee!)
  • Wednesday August 3: Yay New York Tote Bags go on sale. Buy one to support the party, buy one as a secret APW handshake, by one because they are super stylish (designed by And Kathleen).
  • Weekend of August 20th & 21st: Regional fundraising parties, APW book club style. Y’all made it clear that you wanted to be involved with Yay New York, no matter where you were located, so we’re making it happen. Our own Cindy is taking charge of organizing regional parties. If you’d like to help in your area, read more about it over here. We’ll be announcing details here, as the parties are planned.

I’m perpetually in awe of what this community can do, and I can’t wait to see all of this unfold over the next month. Here is to you, Team Practical! Here we go.

  • well holy hell. this is just getting unreasonably amazing.

  • My best friend is marrying her partner sometime next September/October in Cordoba, Argentina (equal marriage rights, “matrimonio igualitario” exist in the whole country since July 2010). I will not be there, but I’m planning on throwing them some kind of party (surprise, shhhh) when I get there in November. I wish I could do for them something as awesome as what you are doing. Or better yet, I wish we could all travel to NY in August and participate in the celebrations! :)

YAY APW! YAY NEW YORK! #KermitArmFlail and everybody dance!!!

    Clearly I am stoked.

  • I am still kicking myself that we are leaving for vacation that day and I’m missing this. If there were any way I could reschedule my vacation just for this event, I would. This is clearly going to be amazing.

  • This is practically awesome.

  • Sweet! Any word on how much tickets are going to cost, or should I just try really, really hard to be a patient person and wait until next week? :)

    • meg

They are SUPER affordable. We want you to donate more (and buy posters and tote bags at the event, which are going to be gorgeous and limited edition.)

      • Amy

Meg – just curious, will you also have a link to donate from your site directly in addition to buying tote bags?
I’d love to come party but I’m in my first trimester pukey/tired/ick stage right now and don’t think I can handle it :(

        • We’ll have a link up on the site starting before the regional parties where you’ll be able to donate directly to Lambda Legal and have it count towards the total APW donation. Yay!

I am soooooo excited for regional parties. Woot WOOT!!!

    • Me too! Especially since I’ve never been to a book club (I’ve lived overseas these last few years and am moving back to the U.S. in a couple of weeks). I’m even more excited to be able to meet some of the Bay Area APWers in person shortly after I get to San Francisco, and the party is the day after my 30th birthday!

  • Any Midwesterners thinking of making this happen? Working on Fridays is for punks, right?

  • cartascartas

the regional fundraiser in DC better be a dance party. ;) so. excited.

    • JEM

      I know a DJ… *coughmyfiance* WHEE!

  • This keeps getting better and better. And the promise of an APW dance party actually makes me consider hopping on a plane that weekend. That is going to be EPIC.

  • I’m super excited to do a regional party in Burlington, VT. I am at a bit of a loss though. I’ve never done anything like this, and any tips / help anyone can give me would be a great help.

Email Cindy, silly. And they’ll just be book clubs, but with no books and drinks. And everyone will donate before they go.
