It’s Book Launch Day Y’all!

The #APWPlanner is officially here

by Meg Keene, CEO & Editor-In-Chief

You guys, you guys, you guys, the #APWplanner is HERE. Today is the day. You can buy it on Amazon, and it will ship right to your door. (TODAY, if you have same day Prime in your area, and you buy $35 worth of things, which is basically the constant purchasing game in our household.)

I won’t lie, writing this book was not a glamorous process. I could write a mile of text about how this book was one of the hardest projects I’ve ever taken on, about how it took over 40 interviews, a research assistant, a project manager, a copy/ development editor, and then my actual editorial team (all of whom I am beyond grateful to). I could tell you about how I—literally, actually—wrote the first half of the book with head down on my desk typing pathetically, because my pregnancy had made me so ill. I could tell you about how I wrote the whole thing pregnant (females are strong as hell, y’all).

But mostly, I just want to say—it was worth it: it’s the wedding book that would have saved us so many tears, and so much goddamn MONEY when we were planning our wedding. It has all the non-sexy stuff you need to know in a chatty girlfriend-to-girlfriend way (because we’re friends, right?). And as my editor just put it to me on the phone, the book is like, “Sorry this thing is going to suck, but if you do it this way it will suck way less.” Which is basically what I needed wedding planning, along with an occasional shoulder book to cry on.

So if you haven’t bought it yet, but were planning on it, I would love-love-love it (and you) if you could buy it today. It’s $14.70 that will save you piles of money and stress in wedding planning (pinky swear), and will make you feel like a feminist badass to boot. And if you’re not getting married, here is why you should buy it for your bestie or sister who is.

But mostly, I’M JUST SO GLAD THIS DAY HAS COME! As a sick pregnant mess writing this book, I tried to imagine the day where it would be here, with confetti (and a six month old baby). And that day is today. And I’m so grateful to all of you for making this possible. CONFETTI FOR ALL OF US!

P.S. If you like the book, please consider leaving a good review on Amazon. I’ll try to resist coming over to your house and hugging you personally.

  • I ordered it yesterday! So excited to dig in. We’re more than halfway through planning (based on the first book and all the advice here, of course). And I can’t wait to see what more advice is there for rocking the rest of the planning! You and the whole team here are the absolute best. Thank you for everything you do!

    • Meg Keene

      Thank YOU. xoxoxoxoxox

  • Totch

I got it for Christmas, so it should arrive today!

  • Kara

I just purchased it for my soon to be sister-in-law! I can’t wait to sneak a few peeks before I ship it to her this weekend.

Meg, I wish we’d had both of your books back in 2009 for our wedding!

    • Meg Keene

ME TOO. Seriously though. 2009 wedding industry, why were you so useless?

      • Yeah, wedding planning is 2009 was challenging. I bought this one (and the first book)….maybe I’ll even get a chance to put the info to use one day!

      • Kara

No joke. APW was the only place I could go that didn’t make me immediately want to cry or go ballistic :).

Thank you again for all that you (and your team) do!

  • Eee my future in-laws got it for me from Christmas on pre-order. I CAN’T WAIT.

    • Ravenclawed

      Those are some awesome in-laws!

      • yeah, tbh they are pretty great.

    • Poppy

Same here! We have definitely had an up-and-down relationship, but it made me feel that they’re on board with this whole “I’m marrying their son” thing.

  • Ashlah

Vote to replace “And though she be but little, she is fierce” with “Females are strong as hell” as the go-to text decor for girls’ nurseries?

    • Lisa

All I have now is the Kimmy Schmidt theme in my head. (Which is also my ringtone.) Thank you.

      • Ashlah

Husband and I randomly sing bits of it constantly. If anyone says the word unbreakable, we inevitably break into song.

        • Jess

I feel so relieved to not be the only one.

          • Rebekah Jane

Definitely not the only one! The boyfriend and I are right there with you guys.

        • LisaG

It’s so catchy! I put an a cappella version of it on a mix for my friends last year, just so everyone else would have it stuck in their heads too!

    • Both? Both is good. (Begins envisioning wall of quotations in dream house decor)

    • MC

Definitely just added that poster to my wishlist for my home office!

    • Meg Keene

FUNNY STORY! I’m currently decorating a (mini) nursery for the little girl that was inside me while I wrote the book. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.

  • Yay! I pre-ordered it, and it came last night. I’ve been flipping through it today, and so far it’s great!
I do have one question: I thought I remembered you mentioning that the book would talk about how to handle wedding planning when you have anxiety, but I couldn’t find that anywhere in the table of contents or the index. I haven’t read the whole thing yet, so I may be missing it, but I just wanted to check and see if that’s somewhere in the book.

    • Meg Keene

EEP. I don’t think I said that, did I say that? I hope not. In short, it’s not in there but I feel you. Try launching a book when you have anxiety. I kid, I kid, but NO I TOTALLY DO NOT KID OMG. I actually just went on anxiety meds this month (it’s been a fucking shitty few months, so, makes sense) and it’s been something of a game changer, but GIRL DO I FEEL YOU.

    • Birdy

This inspired me to search the archives for all things anxiety, and OH MAN, did I find some articles that contained just what I needed to read. I can’t believe I never considered the ways Generalized Anxiety Disorder would impact planning a wedding and why I’ve never been (and never will be) 110% certain about marrying my fiancé. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Even if it’s not in the planner, I hope APW continues to publish articles about anxiety, especially as it relates to marriage and wedding planning!

      • Meg Keene

Since I have GAD, I’m pretty much 110% sure we will.

  • BeccaC

I pre-ordered it on a few weeks ago and I can’t wait until they ship it! It says they don’t have any in stock yet but I’m sure it is only a matter of time before it makes it’s way into my greedy Canadian hands for a peek before I gift it to my newly engaged friend :D I am also passing on my used Practical Wedding book to her :) Congrats Meg!

  • Jane

I was feeling a little sad for myself because, as we got married last year, I wouldn’t have a reason to buy the new book for myself (and my now-husband didn’t believe postponing the wedding until Meg’s book came out was rational). But (!!!) my hair stylist just told me that she’s engaged now, so I’ve bought both books for her!

    • Meg Keene

      Bless you. <3

  • brooksienne

My copy arrived yesterday!!! Just in time for us to start planning our 2017 wedding :)

  • Leah

I think most of the big stuff is already done for our May wedding, but I figure a) there are still smaller things like rehearsal dinner to look at and b) I’ve learned so much from APW over the years that it’s completely worthwhile to order the book as a thank you. So I just ordered it, thank you for all your help over the years, Meg!

    • Meg Keene

I hope/ think there is as much in the book to help with the last minute stuff as the big stuff. The big stuff is hard, and then their is a lull, but figuring out the day of stuff is complicated and critical. And the more help you have figuring out how to do it in a way that makes your life easier, the better.

  • Yay! So excited for you. I have a dear friend who hasn’t done much planning for her June destination wedding, would this be good for her? If it is, I’ll pick it up today!

    • Meg Keene

Yes! I have a destination weddings section that should speak directly to her, and then she’ll still find some of the other sections useful.

  • Lawyerette510

Congratulations!!! I’m just waiting for someone I know to get engaged/ start planning a wedding so I can gift both books to them!

  • Mrrpaderp

Congrats! I pre-ordered my copy on Amazon and I got it today. Super excited to read through it.

  • Rebecca

YAY!!!! One of my besties just got engaged and I was SO THRILLED to send her both APW books! I wrote in my note to her, “This is a treasure trove of smart advice and funny, empathetic perspective. I hope you find it as useful as we did.”

    • Meg Keene

      Awwwww <3 <3

  • Abe

I got mine a week early, because I pre-ordered it from my local bookstore (take THAT, Amazon!). :)

The APW planner is fantastic, I SO needed this. Hooray for sane and sage wedding wisdom!

    • Meg Keene

Ohhhhh, TRICKY. The publishers had a hard stop on it (which they can apparently only do on a few books a year), which bars it from being shipped early. But it’s been around for a few weeks now, so it’s hilarious that the indie’s just shipped it. Also, if you’re the person who left a review on Amazon (even if you didn’t order it there), thank you.

      • Abe

Ha, renegade indie booksellers… one more reason to shop local! When they called to tell me the book was in, I said, “But I thought it’s not out til next week?!” Rebel bookstore: “Uhhh, well it’s here now, so come on by anytime.”

And actually, when I bought the book, the super-hip dude at the store commented, “Oh, I’ve heard really good things about this.” The APW buzz has hit the NYC literati, exciting!

  • Jessica

Got it today! Going to rifle through it before giving it to my engaged bestie. When I told her I was ordering it she asked “are you getting it for me, or do you just want to see it?”

    The answer is both.

    • Lisa

This is one of the major reasons I’m considering buying right now. I don’t need it, but one of my two recently engaged friends might! ;)

  • lady brett

    congrats, meg!

  • Amazon just told me it was delivered!! Can’t wait!

  • Whoo – new year, new book – congrats Meg and the APW team! Question: what is the difference between the Kindle version and the print version? Is there a benefit to owning one versus the other? Impatient me with the tiny apartment would rather buy the kindle version but am not sure what I’ll be missing out on…

    • Meg Keene

Here is an embarrassing revelation. I… have…. no idea what my books look like on Kindle. I’ve never read an ebook in my life, and I… don’t know? However, this particular book I’d probably get in hardcopy. (I’m shooting myself in the foot saying that, because authors get paid a ton more for ebooks, but it’s true.) It’s really a reference style book, and I find those books the most helpful if I can flip around in them, and dog ear pages and stuff. Plus in has some worksheets in the beginning, designed to rip out and put on your fridge if you want to.

      • Amber

        Hi Meg,
I am 8 months out from my wedding, and as of yet I’ve booked Venue, officient, picked bridesmaids, have a dress, and a DJ. I loved the first book and want to get this book, but don’t know if i’m too far into the process to get the full value! I would love to flip through it at a local store but its an order in item. (Small town problems) Can you let me know?? Thanks!

        • Kilodeuce

I have most of my big stuff done as well and I just briefly glanced at it today when I got home and I can already tell its going to help with the details – hopefully it will help you too!

          • Amber

Awesome! Any idea on whether it would be better to get the hardcopy? I’m not much of a worksheet filler outer, so I don’t think I’d need that part, and its significantly cheaper here in Canada to get the ebook.

        • Meg Keene

          Yes! Helpful!

      • Thanks for your input, Meg! I think I will bring my Kindle to the local bookstore and look for a hard copy then before deciding which way to go. Ha – we actually are already married but I’m a big fan of your work and want the partner book to complete the collection. Plus, I genuinely think that there are some money saving ideas related to weddings that apply to all aspects of real life and look forward to serendipitous inspiration:) Congrats again!

        • Meg Keene

AW I LOVE YOU. I will say that the partner book looks so pretty next to the original book on my shelf. I obviously set it up at work so I can see both from my desk.

    • Jess

FWIW, I’ve found that the paper-match style Kindle books (non-tablet, no experience there) tend to have kind of strange formatting of text and sometimes skip over charts/tables/graphics/inset quotes.

Not sure if that would be the case here, but it’s just what I’ve seen in other books.

  • toomanybooks

Thank you for releasing your book the DAY after I suddenly realize it’s time to start seriously wedding-planning if I want to get things done! (It’s been a long-ish engagement.) I pre-ordered the book and I’m on my way home to it right now!

  • Jess

My pre-order is being prepared for shipment. I can’t wait until next week, guys! I need it now!

(because we have just booked our venue this afternoon. It’s getting too real and I need all the helllllllp.)

    • Saxyrunner

The venue booking feels are serious. But, HIGH FIVE! One decision down!

      • Jess

Right?! All of a sudden this thing is real and has a date? What?!

  • Rebecca

Also thank you for recommending buying on IndieBound! I am always looking for a workaround that lets me avoid Amazon, happy to be given that convenient alternative. Here’s the link for others looking to support indie bookstores:

  • Saxyrunner

My copy will get here by 8:00 pm tomorrow!

  • Kilodeuce

Got mine today!!! I’m still finishing up the first book (last three chapters!) but I can’t wait to dig in. We are getting married April 30, 2016 and while we have the ‘big stuff’ done (venue, photog, caterer, dj, officiant, attire), we are now working out the details (decorations/flowers/dessert/FUN). Also I’m writing my master’s thesis AND I have a full time job at the same time and it is REALLY HARD. Like, excruciatingly hard. Feels like i’m carving a sculpture with an ice pick and I don’t know if I’ll finish on time. Hopefully this book will make my life easier in the next few months (I know it will!)

    • Meg Keene

You know, the stuff in the book on the details are just as helpful. I think that’s where I had the most “Ohhhhh, yeah. THIS is why that was fucked up for us.” realizations. Hopefully saving y’all the headaches :)

      • Kilodeuce

yes!!!! the devil is in the details :) thanks so much for writing this book (and the other one) Meg! APW has been such a source of comfort in the last year (and before that) and I love reading new posts, its like I’m drinking a cool glass of water on a hot day… I NEED it!

    • Hello comrade! Our wedding is May 28, 2016 and my board exam is March 16. We’re in a similar boat on having checked off the big stuff, but my anxiety about the little stuff is…not appropriately little. Is it normal to not be able to picture how to do decor without spending a bajillion dollars or having everything look too bare? I just want it to look…nice? (help me, planner)

So I just finished my master’s, am building the website and creating plans for our awesome new group practice/ witches’ coven (yeah working with smart ladies!), studying for this gigantic exam (the prep class is harder than school ya’ll), trying to take at least one subject test for the national certification so I don’t feel like a slacker (had intended to do all 3 during the fall/winter term), and yeah. It is stupid hard. But I feel like I should be doing so much more because I’m the one at home now while lover still has to go to work every day.

In short, I feel you, I’m rooting for you, perhaps we can keep each other sane! I’ll look out for you here. You can do it! Hooray! Go person I have not met and yet feel akin to!

      • Kilodeuce

Aw yay!!! Thanks so much. I’m rooting for you too! Another person in the same boat. My one girlfriend got married last June and did her thesis this fall semester, and my other friend got married this past fall and is doing hers this semester (tho both are working full time, so we have that in common). So, no one I know is doing the Big two things at the same time, in the same semester… nice to meet ya! It’s hard to talk about with people who aren’t in it, though everyone has been offering words of encouragement and I am thankful.

Lately I feel like even though I put in a good day at work and do an awesome job, and then I went to the gym and made a super awesome dinner, because I didn’t do any work on thesis I was a complete failure! Trying to get these negative thoughts out of my brain.

It’s so funny, I just posted my pic of my APW Planner on fb/instagram earlier today and then just now I posted a link to a journal article my university doesn’t have access to to see if anyone else in my FB network has…nothing so far but the juxtaposition is interesting!

You can do it too! Good luck!

      • Meg Keene

GIRL. I wrote the decor chapter for you.

        • It arrived last night! I wasn’t expecting it until this morning, but I flipped straight to the decor chapter and thank you thank you yes it will help. I will try to pry myself away from Pinterest ;)

  • Prue

1 copy on it’s way to Australia! We’ve got all the big stuff locked in for our April 2016 wedding but now that the holiday season is over all the little bits and pieces are appearing and overwhelming me in the process. I’m really hoping it’s APW Planner to the rescue!

  • elliejay23

Ordered this book for myself before I ordered Christmas presents for anybody else. #sorry notsorry
Can’t wait to get it and start reading ASAP!

  • ruth

Just wanted to say congratulations! Having written a book myself, it is a monumental task – I can’t even imagine doing it sick and pregnant. Kudos to you – I will buy this for every getting-married person I know!

  • Rebekah Jane

Is asking your boyfriend to go ahead and propose a little ahead of schedule so you can buy Meg’s book too much?

    I kid. Mostly.

    • E.

I just bought it anyway and am waiting to read it :)

    • Meg Keene

      Noooooo ;)

  • Camille

Checking my Amazon tracking every five minutes waiting for it to get here! So excited! Very glad to hear it will help even if you’re closer to the end of planning rather than the beginning. I’m getting married in April and can’t help feeling like we’re forgetting something. Hopefully the planner will help squash the absurd wedding stress related dreams I’ve been having lately – one where we had the wedding on the wrong day so only half the vendors and guests showed up and we couldn’t afford to have a re-do wedding on the actual day, and one where we just FORGOT to get ready and debated over if we should actually go to the venue for two hours and then I showed up alone and had a dance party and ordered pizza with the remaining guests. What, brain?

Thank you so much for putting this together!

  • Bethany

I’ve been a long time pre-engaged lurker and finally got engaged over New Years! Literally the first thing I did, besides tell family/friends, is pre-order this book. I just got the notification that it shipped and I am SO EXCITED!

  • YAYAYAY! Congrats!!

  • Staria

I cracked… I ordered both the Kindle version and the paperback version! Finally got engaged the week before Christmas and yeah, it turns out actual wedding planning is different to just thinking about it! The Kindle is so I can get started reading right away (I’m in Australia) and the paperback is going to be for my partner (hmm fiance now) so he can get a more accurate idea of what’s needed to plan a wedding.

  • Jacki

Yay!! So awesome, congratulations, Meg! And thanks for timing this book release so perfectly, heh. I’m planning a fall 2016 wedding, panicking a little, and my copy should be here tomorrow. Phew!

  • Vanesa Parker
