This Is How to Get Custom Wedding Invitations without Breaking the Bank

Bojack Studios has everything you could ever need

It seems like when you reach the point in wedding planning to sit down and order wedding invitations, it is also the exact same week you realize your wedding is right around the corner, and there is so. much. stuff. that needs to get done. Now. Which means sometimes you freak out, and figure the best thing to do is use one of those big websites to make some fill-in-the-blank wedding invitations. But if stationery is pretty high up your priority list? If you have… opinions… on invitations, but not an unlimited budget? Then cue Aaron Hotchkiss of Bojack Studios for above and beyond fill-in-the-blank stationery design. (And supporting a small business and independent artist, at that.)

Aaron is the guy you work with to come up with your stationery for your wedding. Not a good enough version of an invitation you kind of like, but a personal design process with a real live human being, who is working on something beautiful to share with your guests.

So let’s talk about exactly what wedding stationery needs Bojack Studios can help out with.

Invitations, clearly. These start at $40 for digital designs that you can print yourself or send electronically. Printed invitations range from $2.20 to $4.00 per invite, depending on paper type (they have several options), and there are discounts based on quantity. Plus, all invitations come with:

  • Premium flat flap envelope in white or ivory
  • FREE reverse side printing
  • FREE return address printing
  • FREE USPS priority shipping

Beyond invitations, there are a ton of other products and packages available in the shop like signage, programs, seating chart posters, and menus, etc. (AKA what I like to call the oh-crap-we-almost-forgot-all-of-this stationary, which is a true story—my husband was designing programs and signage the week before our wedding.)

Aaron told us that couples are finding welcome signs particularly helpful: they add instant decor at a really reasonable price and cut down on ending up with a ton of leftover programs. Posters can be digital or printed on paper or even mounted on foam core. They range in price from $20 to $125, depending on delivery method (digital versus printed), size, and material.

PSST: Since so many of Bojack’s past clients are now growing their families, and they’re not one to turn down the chance to continue helping people celebrate happy days, they are coming out with a line of kids and baby designs soon—stay tuned!

Well now that we’ve covered what Bojack Studios can help you check off the to-do list (um, like, everything wedding stationery–related) and for how much (a steal, you guys), let’s talk about why you want to seriously consider working with them. Basically, Aaron is a dreamboat of a designer who’s all customer service and zero ego, and actually adores working back and forth with his clients, even if you’re a complete design layman. (I’m married to an artist/designer so trust when I say this is not always the case.) Here’s what Aaron told us about his process:

It’s so rewarding to be able to create unique designs and work as a designer to bring our couples’ visions to life. These days, opening the mailbox is usually all about junk mail, catalogs I didn’t subscribe to, and mail for the people who lived at my address ten years ago. So those occasions when I get something well designed and personalized in the mail feels like a really special day. I love helping my clients give their friends and family a little bit of joy in an envelope—to share a little piece of themselves and their happiness through paper.

I’m in the unique position of being married to a wedding planner (APW’s own LVR Events!)—so I have a much better understanding of the process—and the 9.7 billion other things that my clients have going on in the planning process while they’re trying to sort out stationery. Because of that, I am hyper aware of timing and the stress of managing so many moving pieces, and I strive to always provide quick turnaround and an uncomplicated process. Plus, I’ve learned a thing or two from sharing an office with my wife, and I’m able to make suggestions and help navigate the process better than a lot of others in the industry.

One of the things that Bojack Studios does differently is our custom work—we don’t charge a fortune for every little customization. If you’re starting with one of our designs but want tweaks, then we’re going to work with you until we get it just right without a million little add-on fees. We offer completely custom work as well, and we keep our “from scratch” design fees as reasonable as possible (they’re done on a case-by-case basis depending on the scope of the project and the timeline, but they start at $300—and considering that you’re getting custom artwork and one-of-a-kind invitations, that’s a pretty reasonable price).

And APW readers are the best, because they’re not looking for cookie cutter. They appreciate good design and they like to inject personality into their stationery. The design process is always more fun too—APW readers are just so easy to converse with and they keep it real. Also, if you want a cartoon of Ron Swanson and your dog on your wedding programs, I got you. (Totally did that design last fall.)

When I got married, my professional artist/designer husband designed our invites from scratch—and by scratch I mean a Tumblr of inspiration images (pre-Pinterest days, y’all) coupled with my opinions. I got accused of backseat art directing, which is kind of like backseat driving but… worse, but we survived and I gained a deep appreciation of the people who design invitations for a living and deal with backseat art directors like me all day, every day. They are doing the Lord’s work, y’all, just to bring you a piece of paper so pretty that your friends and family will struggle to ever throw it away.

But it’s not just me who thinks Aaron is saint among men, his clients do too:

Okay Aaron is THE BEST! Not only are his signs gorgeous, but for the custom work, he really goes above and beyond to make sure you get what you want. I really enjoyed working with Aaron, and I appreciate his willingness to work with the customer for any changes they might want to make. The signs I requested all turned out beautifully and they are exactly what we were asking for. You rock Aaron. THANK YOU! —JC

I had the best experience working with Bojack Studios for my wedding invitations. Aaron was patient and knowledgeable, and walked me through every step of the process so that I never felt overwhelmed. Being so uncreative myself, I appreciated all of Aaron’s recommendations; he provided online samples every steps of the way so I could see variations of what I wanted. They turned out beautifully, and I will look to Bojack for future invitation needs. Thank you so much! —AS

LOVE my wedding invitations! I am getting so many compliments on them from my guests! Aaron was so pleasant to work with. He quickly and easily responded to all of my requests and made my invites truly personalized! I would absolutely recommend using Bojack Studios for your wedding stationery needs! —ET
