Why do you want to work with APW Couples?

Everyone takes photos these days, and it’s easy to merely document a moment in one’s life. I work with clients with many specific expectations about the photography for their wedding, but I find that most people who come to me do so because they are aware of my eye and style and know that I am likely to create truly unique images and capture the in-between moments that work to overall create the feeling of the day. APW couples are a perfect fit in this respect.

So much wedding photography in the market today is just full of photo tricks and popular toning, and I can create those images for clients as requested. I prefer, however to create portraits that might in some way push the envelope, images that capture moments and the personalities of the loved ones present in more than just a simple smile and a snapshot. I'm an artist by trade, and I believe there's no reason that wedding photos shouldn't create a feeling of beauty, moment, and place in the same way as any body of fine-art photography work would.

Describe your artistic approach to weddings?

My education in photography is originally in Fine Art, having studied at The Rhode Island School of Design, and the stark and simple aesthetic I adapted has stuck with me. I began shooting weddings a few years ago, and found them to be a wonderful photographic experience. Photojournalism is something I have always aspired to, and weddings have afforded me the opportunity to try to create narration in my images that I don't always have when doing exhibition work. It's strange to me that a lot of photographers hate shooting weddings — I love the commotion, the anticipation, the bliss, the tears, and the unfettered joy. All those things, I hope, come across in every wedding I shoot. I don't force photographs, but try to ensure that every part of the day is captured in some form or another. Even those moments that those two being wed, might have missed.

What are your non-work-related hobbies?

I'm an avid reader and particularly interested in sociology, specifically in terms of matters of wealth and class. I play piano and viola, and speak Italian whenever possible. I also enjoy literary non-fiction and dabble in writing in that style from time to time.
