In Which Desaray Explains Engagement Pictures

Desaray just pointed out:

The point of engagement photos is to look at them a.) and think, “I am so cute.” b.) then think, “We are so cute.” c.) Then think, “We are so totally together that we hire professionals to take pictures of us together.” and d.) then look at them again. I think that’s it.

Except that’s not totally it. I think the point *really* is to keep them till you are old, and then follow the above steps again. I think that’s what we’ll do.

  • Exactly.

  • Ha ha- I was just going to email you and say the exact same thing. Our fabulous photographer is just starting out, and so offered us a free engagement shoot (which happened a month ago, and we're getting married in August) and I have looked at them, a lot, and then I stopped looking at them. We are cute- but nobody needs to see 40 pictures of us while signing a guest book, at least not at my wedding :)

For us, the point of the engagement photos was to get to know our photographer (you kiss a LOT in front of them) and to get more specific ideas of what we wanted in our wedding pictures.

My husband and I hadn't had any professional pictures (or really, any pictures of ourselves that we liked) taken since grade school, so we didn't know what poses and angles were flattering to us . In addition, as a plus sized woman, I felt more comfortable on my wedding day knowing that my photographer knew how to accentuate my curves.

I still wouldn't have paid extra money for them, but having the engagement photo shoot before the wedding ended up making the day of a lot easier on us.

  • yes. very very yes!
and also to train your groom to relax and not be crazy-awkward just because there is a camera pointed at him.

  • I'll second what Callie said! I think whoever invented engagement pictures had a nervous fiance who froze in front of cameras and needed practice.

See, we're theatre people, so the idea of "getting comfortable in front of the camera." Ha! Asked Emily. She asked me to "sass it up" and then said, "Uhhh, what are you *doing*? I think you need to dial that sass BACK now."

we are using them as prep for us to get used to having a professional take pictures where we are not both pulling ridiculous faces.

"We are so totally together that we hire professionals to take pictures of us together."

    That made me smile :)

  • and it may be nice to have a hot photo of us not in wedding gear!

  • Peonies and Polaroids

    Big smile.

  • I totally agree with you on this.*wink

  • I was at my friend's house and saw a perfect possibility for engagement photos: photo coasters. When she was planning her wedding, she got a few for free at some trade show (as a potential wedding favor, I guess). She doesn't have her wedding photos in them, but she does have photos from other people's weddings. If you want to see the photos of yourself, I think that'd be a cute way to do it.

Seems like everyone is getting stuck on the label "engagement pictures".

They are professional photographs of your in street clothes. I can't figure out why no one knows what to do with them.

Wouldn't you just frame a couple of them and put the rest in a photo album? They don't have "engagement photos" printed on them.

    I'm confused.

Photo coasters! Bloody brilliant. I think that would make an excellent gift for parents.

I think it's because, at least for us, we don't necessary want/need framed photos of ourselves for our living space, we have photos of family and such, but that's mostly it. We will end up putting them in an album, but something like photo coasters is a great way to give them as a gift.

I look horrendous in photos – the photographer needed to really understand this, and I needed to get comfortable in front of the camera. The extra $200 we paid saved a lot of grief in worrying over the much more expensive wedding photos (a conscious choice to spend that much – see first 5 words of this comment).
