Wedding Inspiration: Bilbo Baggins’ Birthday

Jamie* just pointed out to me that Bilbo Baggins’ eleventy-first birthday at the beginning of Lord Of The Rings is probably the most perfect wedding inspiration ever. Agreed.* Drinking, singing, lanterns in trees, cake practically on fire? Check! Though I don’t plan on physically disappearing at the end of my wedding… exactly. But I’m sure not going to the afterparty.

*Jamie isn’t blogging about weddings anymore, so I kind of figured I could run with this.
** Though admittedly, since I grew up in a house where we gave ‘hobbit presents’ to all our guests on our own birthdays (hobbits give other people presents on their birthdays) I might be a little bit biased.

    I am with you wholeheartedly!

  • Downright awesomeness. This isn’t that far off from what we want. And, Andrew always sings his niece the Bilbo Baggins song

SO TRUE! when my fiance and i started out wedding planning, i said i just wanted a reception like bilbo’s party and my fiance was all onboard :) fun, food, outdoors, and laughter- what more can you ask more? it is still our inspiration ;)

  • I think this is a fabulous idea and right up my alley!

  • Oh, I LOVE that! Another cinematic inspiration of mine is the bazaar from Polyanna! I cannot find any stills of it, but I love the handmade quilts, HUGE slices of cake and watermelon, Japanese lanterns, and old timey band/dancing!

  • Bah! Loves it! Many a nerdy night has been spent with the man over a LOTR marathon and this IS perfect! I wonder if anyone knows of any quotes from it that would be wedding-appropriate. Oh, and it applies so directly to the post after this about “Family/Friends/Food/Wine”!

  • Agreed! Another great wedding inspiration is the party in the Dark Crystal (minus the weird beatle things crashing through the walls).

  • Oh, so hot!! And true. (And props to Anna on the Pollyanna thing too; we still call layer cakes “Pollyanna cakes” in my house.)

  • See, I’d have a party like that if those gosh darn hobbits would RSVP already!

And don’t even get me started on that dang Wizard…

  • You have officially gone out of your bridal mind. (Right on schedule.)

  • Jen

Funny, because I’ve been describing my future wedding location as “looks like something out of Lord of the Rings.”

  • You gave hobbit presents? Awesome.

I wonder if I can figure out how to string up lanterns in my grandparents’ backyard…

Fantastic! I never thought of that. I love that scene. Also, Bilbo’s birthday happens to be the same as mine which makes me happy :)

  • Amy

    I love that movie.

  • Katie

Great idea. I’d like it if your speech is as happily slurred as his in saying “hundred and eleventieth birttthhhday”! Maybe after your vows. That right there means it’s a good party.

  • Great. Really great. Congrats for all your blog. Kisses from Spain

I know this is really late, but – I kid you not – Bilbo’s party is exactly what my honey & I have been comparing everything to. This scene is what we aspire to at our reception. With a ceremony in Rivendell. And no, I don’t mean in costumes or anything – we just think those are 2 perfect settings. And we’d like our wedding to feel magical.

  • This is my dream! My fiance and I are currently cycling around the world, and when we get home I want to have a wedding just like Bilbo’s birthday!

Meg, thank you for creating such an awesome website and bringing together a powerful community of women (and a few cool guys as well). Even though I am currently abroad, I visit your site as often as I can and am consistently impressed and inspired. Well done.

I was talking about ideal weddings the other day and I literally said “I just want something like Bilbo Baggins’ birthday party from LOTR.” I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks that would be absolutely perfect!

  • Heather

What? Wow, this is my dream too! I know it is a fantastic inspiration but I am still surprised that so many other people think so too. Kindred spirits? I think so! Now to find the perfect man who agrees…
