Describe your business in 1-3 short sentences.
Sydney Marie Photography is based in West Michigan and serves couples in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and throughout the USA. I specialize in photographing romantic weddings, engagements, proposals and elopements.
Describe your artistic approach to weddings?
My style of wedding photography is romantic and real. I'm passionate about beautiful fine art portraits of couples, but ultimately I want my clients to be themselves on their wedding day, not to feel they have to copy all the pictures on the internet (I'm looking at you, Pinterest)! Capturing genuine, authentic emotion in the moment is my number one goal
What are your non-work-related hobbies?
When I started pursuing photography in 2008, I was doing self-portraiture and conceptual photography, and I still do from time to time - it’s a fun and challenging way to relax and keep my creative juices flowing when I’m not working on weddings! Photography aside, my husband and I love to travel and explore different places. We enjoy kayaking and hiking, as well as trying new restaurants and craft beers
What’s your favorite book?
My mom will read at any chance she gets, and I inherited her love of books! It’s impossible to just pick one, so I’ll describe two.
First, let me start off by saying that I’m a huge history buff (another thing that runs in my family). My parents and I have been on five family trips to Gettysburg, and I’m planning another one with my husband. Because of my interest in the Civil War, one of my favorite books is The Killer Angels. I always reread it before going to Gettysburg - I love looking at those battlefields and really thinking about what went on during the battle and the choices that were made.
My second favorite book almost took me in a different career path altogether! I was in Science Olympiad in middle school and high school (I know, super nerd status here) and one of the events I was in was called Disease Detectives. I developed a keen interest in how microscopic viruses can do so much damage getting into the human body (like I said, nerd status), and when I found the book The Hot Zone, I considered pursuing epidemiology. The book is about the Ebola virus, which has always fascinated me, but it's also about a woman working with this very deadly disease.
What’s your favorite movie?
My husband is the real movie buff in our house - I’ve only got about 30 movies that I love. The one I can watch anytime is “Robin Hood: Men In Tights.” It's a silly Mel Brooks movie (he’s my favorite director - I own all of his movies), but it's always been one of my favorites that never gets old, even after the 200th time watching it.
If you could have a one minute dance party at your desk, what song would you pick?
Okay, this questions is hands down the hardest. I may not be a movie buff, but music is where it's at for me! I mainly listen to music from the 60s through the 80s, and songs from those awkward punk rock years in middle school and high school (because who doesn't break out singing Fall Out Boy's “Sugar We're Going Down”??) But if I had to pick one song for an epic dance party, it would have to be “Jessie's Girl” by Rick Springfield. It's always been one of my mom's favorite songs - she’d get super excited and turn up the radio in the car whenever it would come on. Also, Jesse is my husband's name, so it's always been one of my favorite songs to get him to dance along to.
