Why do you want to work with APW couples?
The couples that are drawn to our work seem to really “get” the idea that marriage is about everything that happens before and after the wedding date, which seems to align well with the APW crowd. It seems to me that APW couples would prefer rings that are made ethically, by a small family business and represent their values as a couple. We love getting to know our couples, and work really hard to foster a real relationship with them so that they end up with a piece that they will be happy to wear everyday for the rest of their lives (or only on special occasions because some people just don’t like to wear rings when they’re digging in the garden 🙂
What is your artistic approach to weddings?
We end up making a lot of rings that represent natural places that have special significance to the couple, so we end up doing a lot of designs that feature trees, beaches and mountain scopes. Ash’s designs tend to modern, clean lines and simple little details that seem impossible to include on something so tiny. The main heft of the work of the wedding band occurs after the wedding day, so we make solid pieces that are meant to be passed down from generation to generation. We use ethically-sourced materials and practice low-impact practices in our workshop, office and home.
What are your non-work-related hobbies?
Well, we have two little boys, Henry who’s almost 4 and Truman who’s 20 months old (going on 17), so most of our non-work times are devoted to keeping them from being bored, tired or hungry. We’re really lucky to live on a road where you can walk to the left and find a big hill to climb with goats and sheep and cows or walk to the left and end up at a rocky beach, so we spend a lot of time deciding which direction to walk. Ash is a mad tinkerer and can make almost anything. Laurel likes to write and read. We all (except for Henry) LOVE to travel. Henry puts up with it as long as he’s allowed to watch TV on the airplane.
What's your favorite book?
Whoa. That’s a big question. How about I answer what we’re reading now? Laurel is reading The Son and missing Texas where she grew up and Ash is reading the newspaper.
What's your favorite movie?
Again, whoa. As a couple, our favorite movie is Say Anything as we watched it together The Week We Fell in Love.
If you could have a one minute dance party at your desk, what song would you pick?
Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder.
