50 best quotes on love from movies and songs

Sometimes when you’re planning a wedding, you might find yourself thinking, Hey, I could really use a couple of non-cheesy quotes about love right now. Maybe you want to punctuate your ceremony with something meaningful, or you think it would be hilarious to put something cheeky on your cocktail napkins as a conversation starter. No problem, you think to yourself. This is the Internet! Quotes abound! Except, then you hit search and quickly realize you’re going to have to go through seventy-five pages of people misquoting Dr. Seuss to get to the good stuff.

Luckily I am a quotes queen. I used to keep notebooks filled with lines from tunes, books, or films jotted down, and I would harbor these perfect lines for months, maybe years, until the perfect opportunity to use them presented itself. Generally speaking, I have a few favorites that I toss around all the time (“YOUR AURA IS PURPLE! PURPLE!” from Almost Famous is a perpetual winner). So when it came time to stockpile quotes about love that are fun and relatable, I had a two bits of advice guidelines given to me: don’t make it too cheesy, and it’s totally okay to over-quote Say Anything. With this in mind, I sought to pair some of my favorite fictional characters with some of my favorite tunes, and also added in a healthy dose of stuff I’m not obsessed with but that you might be. So here we go: fifty quotes from movies and songs that are all about love—the best kind, the worst kind, and the really regular everyday kind that a lot of us live.

What are your favorite non-cheesy (or maybe awesomely cheesy) quotes about love and marriage?

1.  “Look, in my opinion, the best thing you can do is find a person who loves you for exactly what you are. Good mood, bad mood, ugly, pretty, handsome, what have you. The right person is still going to think the sun shines out of your ass. That’s the kind of person that’s worth sticking with.” —Juno

2. “Good luck finding somebody to put up with your shit for more than, like, six months. Okay? But I accept the whole package, the crazy and the brilliant. Alright? I know you’re not gonna change and I don’t want you to. It’s called accepting you for being you.” —Before Midnight

3. “I don’t think you’re an idiot at all. I mean, there are elements of the ridiculous about you. Your mother’s pretty interesting. And you really are an appallingly bad public speaker. And, um… you tend to let whatever’s in your head come out of your mouth without much consideration of the consequences. I realize when I met you at the turkey curry buffet, that I was unforgivably rude, and wearing reindeer jumper that my mother had given me the day before. But the thing is, um… what I’m trying to say, very inarticulately, is that, um… in fact, perhaps despite appearances, I like you, very much.” —Diary of Bridget Jones

4. “Loretta, I love you. Not like they told you love is, and I didn’t know this either, but love don’t make things nice, it ruins everything. It breaks your heart. It makes things a mess. We aren’t here to make things perfect. The snowflakes are perfect. The stars are perfect. Not us. Not us! We are here to ruin ourselves and to break our hearts and love the wrong people and die. The storybooks are bullshit. Now I want you to come upstairs and get in my bed.” —Moonstruck

I’ll search through the crowd.
Your face is all that I see,
I’ll give you everything.
Baby love me lights out.” —Beyonce, “XO

I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you’re looking at me like I’m nuts. I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it’s not because I’m lonely, and it’s not because it’s New Year’s Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.” —When Harry Met Sally

24. “But the you who you are tonight is the same you I was in love with yesterday, the same you I’ll be in love with tomorrow. And I love that you’re fragile and tough, quiet and kick ass. Hell, you’re one of the punkest girls I know, no matter who you listen to or what you wear.” —If I Stay

I love this list! Something for everyone! My personal favorite is The Hobbit adventure quote – such a clever and cute way to incorporate a beloved book!

    • Yeah, I don’t know how she dug that one up but it gave me the warm and fuzzies.

    • Jess

Yeah, somehow we’re going to have to incorporate that one in, because adventuring was part of the proposal speech.

  • mimi

Love these! This list put a smile on my face to start my Friday :)

  • Emma Klues

This was a fun way to start Friday! I also enjoy the simple Parks and Rec line – “I love you and I like you.”

    • Eenie

I LOVE Parks and Rec. The relationships on that show are so real.

    • MC

Definitely cried while re-watching Ben & Leslie’s wedding episode a few days ago. They are the BEST!

  • MABie

100 points to Ravenclaw for quoting “Trap Queen.”

    • I mean, it’s the love song of the summer. And making pies together? That’s egalitarian <3 Yay!

  • MC

HOW is it that reading that ONE quote from The Fault In Our Stars makes me want to cry?? GAH so good.

  • Kelly

The Notebook is definitely cheesy, but it also contains one of my favorite quotes:

“So it’s not gonna be easy. It’s gonna be really hard. We’re gonna have to work at this every day, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, forever, you and me, every day.”

    • Maddie Eisenhart

Don’t tell anyone, but I really love that movie.

      • I’ve seen it more times than most movies. AND I read the book. What’s wrong with me?

  • That Forrest Gump quote (and part in the movie) makes me tear up every time. Also, “I’m not a smart man… but I know what love is”

  • Eenie

I love Le Petit Prince: “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly. What is essential is invisible to the eye.”

  • rg223

Not sure what the Bridget Jones quote is in the novel, but in the movie this quote ends with “Just as you are,” which is the best part of the quote, and also comes to play later when the friends repeat it during the toast and Mark knows Bridget was talking about him and he smiles a little smile.

I may be obsessed with this movie. Also, I contend Colin Firth was a better Darcy here than in the BBC Pride and Prejudice (hence my noting the ‘little smile’).

    Great list!

    • kate

I was just going to say the same thing! Just. As. You Are. <3

  • AP

Ummm *sniff*…I’m gonna go watch Forrest Gump now, ok? I don’t really need to be at work, do I?

  • Sosuli

I’m just going to jump in with a “yay, Eternal Sunshine!”

  • A.

“Right now we are here, and nothing can mar our perfection, or steal the joy of this perfect moment.” – The Time Traveler’s Wife

  • Lindsay

i love this! two of my favorites are from the tom robbins book “still life with woodpecker”:

“When two people meet and fall in love, there’s a sudden rush of magic. Magic is just naturally present then. We tend to feed on that gratuitous magic without striving to make any more. One day we wake up and find that the magic is gone. We hustle to get it back, but by then it’s usually too late, we’ve used it up. What we have to do is work like hell at making additional magic right from the start. It’s hard work, but if we can remember to do it, we greatly improve our chances of making love stay.”
    and
“Love is the ultimate outlaw. It just won’t adhere to any rules. The most any of us can do is to sign on as its accomplice. Instead of vowing to honor and obey, maybe we should swear to aid and abet. That would mean that security is out of the question. The words “make” and “stay” become inappropriate. My love for you has no strings attached. I love you for free.”

  • eating words

Am I the only one here crying? At my desk? Gah, love these.

  • Kelly

    *Fetty Wap (no r) :-)

  • Kat

God I am such a sap. I read this sitting in starbucks, getting closer and closer to crying, then the Forest Gump quote got me and I had to leave and sit in my car to cry a little. Great list.

  • pajamafishadventures

“I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and
exclaim or murmur or think at some point, ‘If this isn’t nice, I don’t know
    what is.'” -Kurt Vonnegut

It’s not directly about love, but it’s one of those things I think in those quiet happy moments like when we’re holding hands on a train, or have just finished laughing and throwing potato peels at each other

    • kate

love this one too – vonnegut said a lot of good stuff, but this one is just so simple and such a good reminder.

    • p.

We had this quote as part of our wedding ceremony.

  • I always gravitated towards the quotes about Finnick and Annie from The Hunger Games:

“And suddenly, it’s as if there’s no one in the world but these two, crashing through space to reach each other. They collide, enfold, lose their balance, and slam against a wall, where they stay. Clinging into one being. Indivisible. A pang of jealousy hits me. Not for either Finnick or Annie but for their certainty. No one seeing them could doubt their love.”

  • Sarah

Such a fun list with so many “aw, I LOVE that scene,” moments. Dirty Dancing, When Harry Met Sally, and Forrest Gump are like my top 3 favorite movies (no shame either. There’s enough ugliness in life – sweet movies FTW!)

  • Ashlah

    Mushaboom <3

  • Kelsey

Oh thank god 10 things I Hate About You made the cut!!!

  • Rebecca

ugggghhhhh THE LAST ONE. Forrest why do you always make me cry, every time!??

  • AnneBonny

True story: my friends made me read the entirety of “Asleep and Dreaming” in their wedding. You know, including the “You may not be beautiful” lines. They also made a cousin sing “Funny Valentine.” We both sold it, but I teased them about it afterwards. Don’t make your loved ones call you ugly during your wedding ceremony! Truncate that sh*t.

  • Mandi P

    15 & 31 – yes! A good list, overall, too.

  • Crayfish Kate

“You’re the name of the place where time stands still.” Matt Skiba & the Sekrets, “You”

“I’m not much of a jester, but I’d test poisoned food for you.” Alkaline Trio “Queen of Pain”

(….I might have been something of an emo kid in college :-P)

  • Jess

And now… I’m going to go watch Ever After. “I shall go down in history as the man who opened a door!” That movie does not get enough credit for being amazing.

Maybe in preparation for wedding planning, I’m just going to go around watching romantic movies and digging up quotes. That sounds healthy, right?

  • CocoRosa

Sorry this is long, but the song in its entirety is truly worth it. Truckstop Honeymoon’s “Magnolia Tree.” Heartbreaking and beautiful, it is even more touching when you listen to it!

Coz I love you so much and you’re so good to me
I’m going to plant a Magnolia Tree.
It will grow tall, and we will grow old.
Then I will dig us a deep wide hole
    The Magnolia Tree

I will go first and then you will join me
There in the shade of the Magnolia Tree
You in a dress, and me in a suit
We will lie together in the tangled root
    The Magnolia Tree

And our flesh will rot but our bones will not scatter
The roots of that tree, will bind us together
In life we are married by preacher and church
In death we will be married in rich black earth
    The Magnolia Tree

And when we are gone, our children will come
In the pouring rain and the burning sun
They will find comfort in our memory
Shade and shelter under that tree
    The Magnolia Tree
