Other Cool Stuff We Should Know About

Put everything on the table when you’re planning. Zac is not religious, and because of that, I assumed we’d have a justice of the peace do the ceremony, and that there would be no discussion about it. Then, about three months into our engagement, Zac asked, “Hey, do you want a religious ceremony?” I told the truth, and a few weeks later we were meeting with our priest, Zelda. She helped us modify the traditional marriage rites to make the ceremony inclusive to both Zac and our agnostic/atheist guests. Never assume that something is a deal breaker for your partner; only they can set those boundaries.

If you live in a city with a big creative market (e.g., LA, NYC, Austin), about forty to ninety percent of your friends are talented performers. This is a fact. Find them, politely ask if they might be willing to help you have a wonderful day, then feed and/or pay them well and love on them real hard. Both our ceremony musician and our DJ are our friends, and they were incredible. Bonus: If you get along with your non-friendor vendors, they’ll become your friends! Hi, Melissa! Hi, Greta!

All but one very saintly bridesmaid live far away from Los Angeles. When you are engaged, it’s on you to get in touch with your bridesmaids. I regret not calling mine more when I was planning.

If you wear glasses in your daily life and it is uncomfortable for you to wear contacts, wear your glasses on your wedding day. Do not even waste your time considering being uncomfortable. You will look beautiful, if I may say so myself.

Never let anyone tell you that toasts are the worst part of the reception. As long as your friends and family are smart and/or hilarious, toasts are wonderful, and might even make your partner’s boss cry!

Favorite Thing About The Wedding

The group blessing at the end of the ceremony, the toasts (which included life-affirming friendship histories, childhood legends, family-friendly college stories, and quotes from Hannibal Lecter and Lorelai Gilmore), Sarah’s very serious dad doing the Saturday Night Fever dance, and people making friends!

Love the comment about glasses. My fiance has been insistent I wear mine, because his sister didn’t and he doesn’t like that she doesn’t look like herself in her photos. Beautiful wedding!

This. 1000000 times this. My biggest regret about my own wedding is that I didn’t look like myself. I grew out my fabulous asymmetrical haircut. I picked simple (boring) accessories. I wore a fluffy lace dress. All the photos have this generic standard-bride-person in them, and I wish they had someone who looks more like me.

Beautiful wedding and couple. I *LOVE* the berry-topped cake!

This x 100 “Never assume that something is a deal breaker for your partner; only they can set those boundaries.” Also this looks like such a fun wedding and the glasses and lipstick combo is killer!

I was just posting a comment about the same quote! it stood out to me enough that I came back to read this for a second time. great soundtrack for reading choice, too. one of my favorites.

LOVE your glasses!! Way to rock it!

    Please share the Lorelei quote!

    • SChaLA

Haha–Zac’s best man quoted, “I’m just looking for someone I can hang out with for the rest of my life,” and then talked about how that’s all anybody’s looking for, and how we’ve found that person, and blah blah blah :D

Was totally going to ask too :)

Love the glasses. I just got new frames this weekend, and they’re considerably darker and heavier than any I’ve had before (I’d even thought that my light-weight gold and sparkly frames would have been perfect, but then I needed new glasses, and styles have changed). It’s really reassuring to see a bride also in darker frames looking as good as you here!

    • kcaudad

you could check on Zenni optical to see if they have similar frames to your previous ones of if they have ones that will match your wedding look. I got 2 new sets of glasses (regular and sun glasses with frames, lenses, tinting, etc.) for $60 total a few years ago. They can even use your eye exam from your regular eye dr. This might help you feel more comfortable on your wedding day while still wearing glasses. Also, you would have a spare pair of glasses in case something happens! http://www.zennioptical.com/

Thank you! For the record, mine are good ol’ Warby Parker.

  • Lisa

Your shoes!! They are fantastic. Gorgeous wedding!

Rocking the glasses! Love it. I found out my fiance’s aunt was thinking about getting me contacts for my birthday so I could wear them to the wedding – subtly, and with the best of intentions, but still, I felt odd. I’ve worn glasses for so long now that I feel strange without them. But hey, we’ll see. Good for you for sticking up for what you’re comfortable in! It paid off. <3

Also – deer wedding crashers? xD

    • SChaLA

Yeah. I used to wear contacts, but when I moved to LA the dryness was very irritating to my eyes and I stopped being able to wear them. I did try wearing them on when I went wedding dress shopping, but they were so uncomfortable that I got really stressed out. It really bothered me; I was so worried that I wasn’t going to look “bridal” enough. But it turned out great, and now I realize how silly that worry was. The WIC will make ya crazy!

  • farmgirl13

    your bouquet is freaking gorgeous!!

  • Emma Klues

Is that sign of the DePauw Marvin’s fame?! I didn’t even go there and I know about it :) Lovely wedding!

    • SChaLA

      It sure is.

Those flowers! Beautiful. And I’m intrigued by that guestbook (?) So pretty and it looks like you could hang it? Please enlighten!

    • SChaLA

GURL. Free PDF poster from Martha Stewart Weddings. Go to FedEx and print that ish out big, then buy a cheap-but-shmancy frame. Ta da! I can’t find the link right now, but you could probably do it with any pretty picture.

      • Mallory

Oh, snap, I’m totally doing this! Amazing. Thanks, lady!

  • Katie

    That bouquet. OOF. So beautiful.
