30 Girl Power Getting Ready Songs for the Morning of Your Wedding

Surprise! There's a whole bunch of Beyoncé.

by Maddie Eisenhart, Chief Revenue Officer

As much as I’d love to do away with 99.9 percent of the gendered bullshit surrounding weddings, I have to confess, getting ready for my wedding with just my bridesmaids and the women in my family was one of the highlights of the day (my grandmother even got in on the action). Maybe it was all those years on the cheerleading squad, or my all-girl Odyssey of the Mind team, but I’ve got a soft spot for a room full of girls, a bottle of champagne, and Spice Girls on full blast. And even if you’re not having a wedding party, or your wedding party is mixed gender, who can argue with bubbly and Britpop? So with that in mind, today we’ve rounded up a playlist of some of the staff’s favorite #GirlPower tunes. Now excuse me while I go turn the volume up, and sing into my hairbrush microphone.

What did you listen to while getting ready for your wedding? Bonus points if it’s Britpop!

I did not get ready for my wedding with friends nor did I play music, but if I had, it would have included some old Madonna (definitely “Where’s the Party,” probably “Get Into the Groove”), Sugarland’s “Gotta Be Something More,” and the J-Lo song of my choice would be “Waiting for Tonight.”

    LOVE IT.

My best girls threw me bachelorette party, express version, the two hours before they all pitched in for ceremony set-up, and it was one of my absolute favorite parts of the day. I had mentioned drinking champagne in pretty much every email I sent to them, which meant we had whole coolers of the stuff, which my chef friend of course fancied up further with watermelon and mint. Divine.

P.S. Have you thought about making this playlists available via Spotify? Never tried to do something like that, but sure as shit would follow and listen.

yes! or a playlist on 8tracks? I feel like APW has done that before…

This is timely! Thirteen days to go and will totally cue some of these up when we start getting ready.

I’ve had lily allen’s “hard out here” on repeat this month, that one could be a good one for the right crowd (but maybe not if you want to, say, get ready with your grandma and your six year old).

  • meleyna

It was just me and my flower girl (aka my then-two-year-old daughter), so Frozen soundtrack, naturally.

And because I’m shameless, here she is helping me hang 1000 paper cranes.

awww. We kicked off the dance party to “Let It Go” because we knew it was sure to get the half-dozen little girls in attendance onto the dance floor, and once you’ve got the kids dancing, adults will follow. It worked like a charm, plus earned me the everlasting admiration of all those little girls.

I fully intend to go back and listen to all the songs because I’m sure they’re amazing, but had to jump down here first to say: YOU DID ODYSSEY OF THE MIND TOO??

I was part of that in elementary school for two years and absolutely LOVED it, but when I talk about it no one ever seems to know what the heck I’m talking about. It was the best. (Well… maybe second best if we’re counting DramaFest in high school, heyoooo Massachusetts High School Drama Guild!)

OM! I did it too! I was on an all girls team that was one place short of going to worlds and then was on an all boys team (except me) that MADE IT TO WORLDS! It was one of my favorite parts of elementary and middle school (I moved to somewhere that didn’t have it for high school). It’s amazing what the teams create for less than $150!

    • That was my reaction too! Odyssey of the Mind was the bomb! Also had an all girls’ team from my all girls’ middle school and we weren’t so great at our drama pieces (though they were ridiculous fun), but we rocked the Spontaneous rounds.

We listened to Beyonce’s incredible self-titled “visual” album. It was a flawless choice. :)

Thank you for this-perfect timing!!! On the bus this morning I was thinking that it was time for me to get started on my playlist for getting ready. Our wedding is 39 days away. I am excited, exhausted, and overwhelmed all at the same time. :-)

  • Brigid

Goodbye Earl? *Really?* I love Dixie Chicks, but…maybe with less mariticide on a wedding morning?

  • AJ

I put these all in a Spotify playlist if anyone is interested :)
