What’s Your First Dance Song?

Let's make a playlist!

Managing Editor Maddie and I have a running debate about the song “At Last,” sung by Etta James. I think it’s a great first dance song and a classic for a reason. Maddie never wants to hear it again. This might have something to do with the fact that she’s been to about a hundred weddings as a wedding photographer in the last few years, or it might have something to do with the fact that the girl has purple hair. She likes to be different.

For most of us, figuring out a first dance song is negotiating between wanting to be a little bit original, and wanting a song that’s meaningful. The truth is, you’ll think of your wedding whenever you hear this song, for the rest of your life. So play what you want, even if it’s Etta James (hell, ESPECIALLY if it’s Ms. Etta).

But we all know APWers have great taste, classic and original. It’s been a long time since we polled APW readers on what their first dance song was (or is going to be), and it seems like high time. So here we go!

What first dance song did you use? What are your favorites—classic, or super unique? Share your best stuff, and we’ll put together a playlist for inspiration.

We aren’t actually sure if we’ll have a first dance or not, but if we do, it will be “Darling I Do” by Landon Pigg. (From the Shrek soundtrack.)

    • Molly D.

Shrek!! I wanted “Accidentally in Love” but my husband wanted the shuffle/sway instead of swing/jive.

    Etta James…Sunday Kind Of Love
“I want a Sunday kind of love
A love to last past Saturday night
    And I’d like to know
It’s more than love at first sight”

    • Amy Sigmon

I adore this song. Good choice!

  • ART

We did Sea of Love by Phil Phillips! I love that song but I can’t stand any of the covers.

    • katespeed

Ha… we are doing Cat Power’s cover of Sea of Love!

      • erin

We also did the Cat Power cover. I loved it, but felt so awkward having everyone stand and watch us that we cued the DJ to fade out halfway through.

  • Jessica

“Say Anything” by Tristan Prettyman. It came on the radio a few months ago and made me cry like a baby.

  • Lan

“You are the best thing” Ray LaMontagne

    • Sparkles

This was our song. It was soo wonderful!

  • Libby

“How Sweet it is” by James Taylor

  • Amanda L

    “All I Want is You” – U2

    • This is definitely on our list of slow songs to play over the course of the night – a perfect choice!

    • NicoleT

That’s going to be our processional song! FH heard it for the first time recently and saw how happy it made me, so he agreed. I’m hoping his one friend who hates U2 will just keep it to himself during the wedding.

  • Kats

“That’s How Strong My Love Is” – Otis Redding

    • Sarah Coker

      Samesies :)

  • Rebekah

    “Faithfully” – Journey

  • JDrives

“Beauty and the Beast,” the original song from the Disney film. We’re both big fans of the movie and it’s a purdy song, but I’m making sure my fiance is OK with people wondering if that means he’s a Beast!

    • Natalie

Haha! I love that song and movie, but haven’t suggested it because I didn’t want to upset my fiance by implying that he’s “Beast”.

      • JDrives

I completely understand your hesitation! My fiance is actually the one who suggested it, otherwise I wouldn’t have brought it up for the same reason!

    • Glen

We used Something There as the entrance song for our wedding party. Love the movie!

      • JDrives

Love it! A friend of mine used “Be Our Guest” during dinner at her reception. Amazing.

        • Natalie

oh man, that is perfect! I think I’m going to use this for either our cake-cutting song or the first song during dinner.

  • Elizabeth

This is an ongoing debate but right now it’s looking like “Everywhere” by Fleetwood Mac.

    • Mo

      • Elizabeth

        4 LYFE!

    • Ally

AMAZINGGG!! This song makes me tingly.

I had to limit my Fleetwood/Stevie songs on our playlists and it was sooo hard.

  • Heather

Baby I’m Yours – Arctic Monkeys

  • MC

Not sure if we’re doing a First Dance, but our choice of a slow dance/first dance song is “Love on Top” – Beyonce. Also, First Karaoke: Islands in the Stream – Dolly & Kenny

    • jashshea

Islands in the Stream is my JAM.

    • Lauren from NH

We have fallen in love with Beyonce’s “XO”. We’re planning to process to it. Gotta love Beyonce.

      • MC

I looooooove that song – Fiance usually skips it, but I think that’s mostly because he wants to listen to ***Flawless. Which, can’t really blame him there.

    • Caitlin_DD

Yes, I would love to do this if FH liked Beyonce.

  • APracticalLaura

Ours was “Silver and Gold” by Neil Young

  • Meredith

    Heavenly Day – Patty Griffin.

    • Amanda Van Mil

This was ours, too, and it was perfect – both tempo and meaning behind the lyrics.

      • Meredith

Our reasoning was exactly the same. I’ve always loved the lyrics and we needed a tempo appropriate for our “stand and sway” style of dancing as our dancing enthusiasm far outpaces our dancing skill.

    • Meredith

Love that song so much. My close friends, who were high school sweethearts, used it and she passed away 1 week before their 5th anniversary. So, I cry every time I hear it.

  • Catriona

“Songbird” by Christine McVie / Fleetwood Mac.

  • AR

The Fleet Foxes Sing cover of “Can’t Help Falling in Love”

    • JayLeePhoto

YAY! We did Ingrid Michaelson’s version!

      • Anonymousfortoday

That’s on our short list currently!

    • Kate

We chose the original Elvis version. That song is just gorgeous.

      • JDrives

That was my top choice behind what we ultimately went with. Love, love that song.

    • Natalie

My future mother-in-law will be playing this on the violin during our ceremony (she’s a professional violinist). Gorgeous.

  • Austyntatious

Not sure if we are doing a first dance… at least not publicly at the reception…. but:

    Nearness of You ~Norah Jones

    • Jess1216

I thought this song was SO perfect and was disappointed that my husband disagreed. Boo to him – it’s a great song! :)

      • Austyntatious

Yea the FI doesn’t like to dance (especially in public) so it may end up being a private thing between us two once we’re alone (at last)

        • Jess1216

          Awww that’s a cute idea, too :)

  • Stephanie

Is This Love – Bob Marley

  • Kristen

It’s a toss up. The Luckiest by Ben Folds has been our song forever, but we are huge Broadway nerds and so it’s a toss up between that and I’ll Cover You from RENT. :)

    • Anon

      I ADORE I’ll Cover You!

    • Violet

Oh god, The Luckiest makes me BAWL. Fantastic song!

    • Heather

Our first dance was to The Luckiest because it’s been our song forever… and we recessed to a (slightly) choreographed “Seasons of Love” that my husband cut and edited to remove the sad bits. (as we kissed, an early chorus started, and after that ended, it cut to “it’s time now to sing out” and it was PERFECT- sounded completely normal and everything).”I’ll Cover You” is one of my very favorites, and we always dance to it in our apartment. :)

      • Heather

He also cut a verse from The Luckiest because it was so long for a first dance… I can’t even remember which it was now, but I’m happy to email it to you if you’d like it!

  • Guest

Still debating if we’re even going to do a first dance, but the potential front runner is “Young Folks” by Peter, Bjorn, and John. I like it because it acknowledges a not-so-great past but comes out strong and hopeful and reaffirms that you’re more than what’s behind you.

  • SusieDoozie

“Carballo” by Essex Green. We had the final line, “Yours to hold,” engraved in my husband’s ring.

  • Erin

Halestorm’s “Here’s to Us” (Radio edit for the grandparents and children)

  • elle em

“Never” by Rilo Kiley for my lesbian wedding last June.

    • leafygreen

Love it! I was just thinking about this one (early planning stages), since Rilo Kiley’s one of the only bands we semi-agree on. However, “I’m only a woman…” may be an awkward opening line when only one of us is a woman. Blergh.

      • elle em

I know! Jenny Lewis belting, “I’m only a woman….” as the song starts was so funny to both of us because it was just so honest and fit perfectly and helped us keep from crying. But I think it works for everyone and is a nice twist to think of the first dance song coming from a woman’s point of view which is very APW :) good luck choosing!

  • LE

“My baby just cares for me” by Nina Simone

    • Lian

We’re pretty sure we’re doing “Feeling Good” by Nina Simone. Every single song played at our wedding could be Nina Simone as far as I’m concerned.

      • LE

Great choice!! Love love love her.

  • Abby

“Make You Feel My Love” by Adele (though there are many versions!)

    • Jessica

This version was our runner up.

    • Elizabeth

This was our runner-up, so it was played as our last song of the night – I love it. My husband had a very firm “no covers” rule for our first dance for some reason…

      • Heather

MINE TOO! I still don’t get it, but… so funny- I thought it was just my husband!

      • Lauren M Brace

MINE THREE! which is hard because some of the songs I love the most are just a tad too fast to dance to but the cover isn’t?

    • Deify Plums

That’s ours too. It was perfect, easy to find the beat, and not too long :)

  • macrain

    “Falling” by Ben Kweller.

  • Katie

Into the Mystic – Van Morrison

    • Lawyerette510

Oh that’s one of my favorite songs!

    • Jacky Speck

This was my first dance song too! It’s reminded me of my now-husband ever since I met him.

    • Nope.

How did you guys dance to this? We’ve picked that out for our wedding in two months, and I’m starting to worry…the fiancé is rhythmically challenged and I’m a little worried that standing/swaying won’t cut it for the horn section.

      • Katie

Sometimes we sample wedding wine options and practice dancing. Usually I get a fun spin out-and-in for the horns, and then some very waltzy twirling.

    • Kat91314

I LOVE that song, and actually the Zac Brown Band live cover version is pretty awesome too. It’s on our reception playlist :-)

  • Rachel D.

Ours was “The Offering” by The Avett Brothers. We went to an Avett Brothers concert for our first Valentine’s Day together, and the song says a lot of the same things we feel about love and hope to keep/have in our relationship. Also, it’s not very long which meant people didm’t have to watch us middle school sway forever.

  • Jenna

“When the Right One Comes Along” by Striking Matches (though we may use the cover version from Nashville). Cheesy, but perfect for us: :)

    • ART

from the show? i’ve never seen it, but I watched some special where they were all doing a concert and the songs were giving me chills!

    • macrain

It is not cheesy. It is perfection.

    • Lawyerette510

Ugh, that song gives me chills and sometimes makes me cry. ETA: In the best way possible

    • Natalie

I LOVE the Nashville version of this song. So pretty.

  • Kelly Mine-His

    “Love You Madly” by Cake

    • Rachel D.

That’s the song we entered the reception to! Loved it!

      • Alexandra Jackson

That’s what we are doing too! :)

    • vegankitchendiaries

NO WAY!? TOO COOL FOR SCHOOL! Awesome!

      • Kelly Mine-His

Yes! We even learned Hustle so we could dance to it appropriately!

    • Margret

Our wedding party processed to this song!

    • JDrives

Love! We are using this as our cake-cutting song because, Cake :)

      • moonlitfractal

We used it for cake cutting and it was great! We always smile when we hear it. :-)

    • Amanda Van Mil

      We recessed to this song!

    • US TOO! We’re using it as a combo entrance and first dance song.

    • Such an awesome choice!! So joyful.

  • “Big Jet Plane” – Angus and Julia Stone. So pretty and wistful. Makes me think of all the travels we will do together.

  • Jess

We are not slow dance people, so: “Last Time” by Gnarls Barkley. Bonus points for hopefully getting everyone else to come dance with us by the end too.

  • Natalie

We’re still debating ours. I wanted Frank Sinatra’s “Come Fly with Me,” but my fiance claims to dislike Sinatra because he was a sexist womanizer. I’m definitely combing this list for suggestions to bring to the picky fiance.

    • Allison

Oh man, this is so interesting because I almost switched our song for the same reason since we chose Sinatra’s, “All The Way.” I still love the song, and it’s one of the few we both felt captured the feeling we wanted, so I keep telling myself that artists can be both good and bad people, but that doesn’t mean their art is automatically good or bad. Hopefully I am not kidding myself too much :)

      • Natalie

I agree with you. I think Sinatra’s faults don’t take anything away from the fact that his music is beautiful. I love so many of his songs. But I’m not fighting this battle with my fiance, since I’m sure we’ll find a song that speaks to both of us equally. We have 9 weeks left to do so.

        • Allison

Yes, it doesn’t seem like a battle to pick when it’s not internal like mine. It definitely needs to be special for both people. Thanks for agreeing though, it does make me feel better :) Good luck with your search!

  • Randi Morgan

After much debate, I think we’ve decided on “If I Didn’t Have You” by Thompson Square! He proposed to me at Thompson Square’s concert last year and he got down on one knee during “If I Didn’t Have You.” It’s such a beautiful, heartfelt song, and even more meaningful that he asked me to marry him as it was playing! Not to mention it goes perfectly with our country music themed wedding. Only 24 more days until I get to have that first dance!!

    • lildutchgrrl

Probably better for a wedding than the song of the same title by Tim Minchin. ;)

      • leafygreen

My fiance and I love this song (we are nerds). Mayyyybe the abridged version without the verse that ends in “Am I really so poor and ugly that you reckon only you could possibly love me?” can sneak its way into our playlist. :P

      • Randi Morgan

Yes, much better for a wedding than the Tim Minchin song! I think our guests would be a tad confused if we used that one for our first dance!

  • Ashley

A blues-y rendition of All I want Is You by U2

  • Kayjayoh

The first dance song we *chose* was “Give Me Your Hand” (Tabhair dom do Lámh) played by Jay Ungar and Molly Mason. The first dance song that actually got played with “The Lovers’ Waltz,” also by Jay Ungar and Molly Mason.

We stood together on the floor and heard the first strains of the song playing.

“It’s the wrong song,” said M.

“Do you want ask him to change it?” I asked.

“No, let’s just dance.” And we did and it was beautiful.

    • 123456

I’m listening to this right now because I had no idea what song it was…and it’s gorgeous! So wrong song or not, like you said, it’s lovely.

      • Kayjayoh

Fortunately, we had gone back and forth between the two songs when deciding. I think the mix-up happened because both songs were on an album called the Lovers Waltz, and our friend who was DJing just ended up with the wrong one.

    • erin

I walked down the aisle to “Give Me Your Hand” — these are both gorgeous choices and I love that you now have two first dance songs.

      • Kayjayoh

  • Lawyerette510

“Cruisin Together” as sung by Huey Lewis and Gwyneth Paltrow. A pretty silly song, but we both love to sing it, and whenever we were down when we were on our 6 month road trip through Mexico and Central America, we would either put that on and sing to each other or put on MIA Paper Planes. While there were songs that I thought better expressed the way we feel about each other, there really was no question which one made us smile the most and took us back to the first year of our relationship.

    • Lawyerette510

Although my favorite song that I danced with Dave to the night of our wedding was later on in the night when I was standing with him and some other folks talking near the bar and “You Are the Best Thing” sung by Ray LaMontagne came on and we had this fantastic moment slow dancing together kinda in the corner.

      • Erin

We had the same thing – and then my new sister in law and her brand new baby joined us, so we wound up all dancing together. It was a bit awkward at the time, but now I just think it’s hilarious.

  • Cait Hawley

We’re using the Ingrid Michaelson cover of “Can’t Help Falling in Love”.

    • That was the song we danced to. It was great!

      • This was one of our choices, too! That and “You and I” by Ingrid Michaelson. We played them both later in the reception.

    • Becca S

      We’re using this too!

  • kmlc

We did “My Favorite Book” by Stars. That was my top choice along with “All this Time” by Heartless Bastards– great song but definitely more rock and harder to dance to.

  • JBax

We used “I Found You” by Alabama Shakes!

    • neighborhoodmap

We are planning on using this one too! We get married in 6 weeks … I’m a bit worried about the tempo. Did you guys have any trouble with that?

      • JBax

Not really! A few weeks before the wedding, we popped on a playlist of six or seven first dance options we liked and danced around in our living room to see which one felt best, and that one was our winner. We ended up breaking into a kind of goofy, rockin’ break down at the end of the song when the beat really changes. It was really fun and silly, so we ended up just keeping it for the real thing. :)

        • neighborhoodmap

Oh good, thanks! We need to actually try dancing to it — we’ve gone back and forth on using it, but we’re so close to the day without any other options that now we’re back to it. The song itself actually has some significance for us, besides the lyrics being perfect for the occasion (this album came out when I was going through some medical things when our relationship was still pretty new and he was an amazing caretaker — it was when we both knew this was it for us). But my maid of honor wrinkled her nose at it when I first played it for her as the first dance song I wanted, and ever since then I’ve been second guessing it. Moral of this story: that’s why you should just keep these things to yourself!

          • JBax

I say go for it! You’re the ones dancing, not her. :)

  • Anne Schwartz

“Grow old with me” – Jason Robert Brown

  • Another Meg

“Riches and Wonders” by the Mountain Goats

  • Ours is going to be “This Year’s Love” by David Gray.

    • Erin

Ohh I love this song! It freaking kills me every time. God bless you both!

      • Thank you! We both went through some tough breakups and let-downs before we found each other, so it’s perfect for us.

  • Molly

Fields of Gold by Sting from the 2006 album ( lute version).

    • Caitlin_DD

Oh gosh, that is a good pick.

  • Alyssa

We had They Say It’s Spring by Blossom Dearie.

  • Kristen

    Inevitable by Anberlin.

  • Nicole B

“Book of Love” — Peter Gabriel version

    • KitBee

  • Katie*

We didn’t have a “first dance” but the closest we had was “Meet me where you’re going” by Cloud Cult.

    • Alyssa

I LOVE CLOUD CULT. Great song. My hubby and I have been to 5 of their concerts. (He’s been to 6.) I love meeting other Cloud Cult fans – they are good people! We don’t have kids yet, but we’re hoping that one day our future little girl will dance with G to “You Were Born.”

  • Kelly

I *hate* At Last (it was on our do-not play list) because it was the ringtone my former roommate used for her terrible boyfriend. Alan flashbacks? no thanks.

Our song was Rosie Thomas’s version of Let It Be Me. It is beautiful!

Also, for our first dance we did a fun petal toss leading to the dance floor, but it took a few seconds for people to realize we were going straight into our first dance. It was so nice to have 45 seconds to dance all by ourselves before our friends and family surrounded us.

  • Caroline

“I will always love you” by Frank Sinatra.

  • jhs

“This Must Be The Place” by Talking Heads

    • scw

we’re considering this one for our processional!

    • ART

OMG, i could not convince my husband to use this one because he couldn’t figure out how he would dance to it, but it was on our playlist. This is one of my all-time favorite romantic songs.

    • Mo

      Great choice!!

    • macaroni

SUCH a great song! My brother has said for years that he’s intending on spending the entire wedding planning process convincing his bride-to-be that “TMBTP” should be their first dance. (Unless, of course, she thinks it’s a great idea from the start. Then that would be just perfect.)

    • laurabird

I love this song! My fella has always been into Talking Heads, I didn’t really ever listen to them until him. But this is definitely one of “our” songs, and it’s for sure going to be used in some way at the wedding. Not sure where, but it’s happening!

    • SChaLA

      Ours too!

  • Anna

My FH was feeling a bit like the wedding planning had nothing to do with him (because he didn’t care about most of the details), so we decided that he would pick the first dance song and not tell me what it was going to be. So I have no idea right now! I’ll find out just under two weeks from now :)

    • Natalie

      aww, that’s sweet!

    • Bethany

My husband surprised me with our first dance song too! It was perfect.

    • Amanda

      That’s soooo sweet!

  • Allie Moore

I love how many people are finding this to be topic of debate (it’s been a huge topic of debate over here, too). It looks like we’re going with I’ve got the world on a string and splitting the song — 1/2 for first dance, 1/2 for parent dances.

  • Alexandra Jackson

“No One’s Gonna Love You” by Band of Horses…beautiful lyrics, plus Band of Horses was one of the first concerts we went to together.

    • cschaffner

  • Bethany

    “Crazy Love” by Van Morrison

  • Kayakgirl73

    Better Together by Jack Johnson

  • emilyg25

“I Was Made for You,” by She & Him. I wanted something upbeat and short. The lyrics also describe how we met pretty well. Second choice was “Say Hey (I Love You)” by Michael Franti and Spearhead. Neither has any personal meaning.

    • Molly D.

“You Never Can Tell” is an EXCELLENT choice and I wish it was played at more weddings!! We picked “La Vie en Rose,” which you really can only shuffle along to. It fit for us.

      • Violet

We played “You Never Can Tell” (not as our first song, but in the mix), and people LOVED it!

  • macrain

    “Falling” by Ben Kweller.
    Love all of these!

  • MegP

Ours was “Red Red Rose” by Camera Obscura, which is a Robert Burns poem they set to music. I bought the record at one of their shows while studying abroad, he has Scottish heritage, and Camera Obscura is one of my fav bands. Most people had never heard the song before, but our guests who recognized it as a Burns poem were very pleased!

    • Jessica

I just saw Camera Obscura in concert and it was amazing. It was a pretty packed house and they seemed really flattered. A+ song choice!

    • vegankitchendiaries

A scottish wedding just isn’t complete without a Burns poem! x

  • Griff

    Bob Seger – You’ll Accomp’ny Me

Runner up: The way you look tonight- Frank Sinatra

  • Amberella

“The best of times is now” from the original Broadway cast recording of La Cage Aux Folles. Still makes me cry to listen to it.

  • vegankitchendiaries

Picking this song was the worst.

For the first few months of our engagement I was POSITIVE I wanted ‘Love Like This’ by Faith Evans and I even managed to convince Mr Vegankitchendiaries this was a great idea… for a while. We probably changed our minds about eleven times about what it was going to be. The longer we waited, the more important it seemed… Nothing seemed perfect enough!

A few days before the wedding my husband played me We’re Going To Make It by the Mighty Hannibal (who passed away this year). I was so wracked by bridal decision fatigue, I couldn’t even tell if I liked it but I thought it would be nice to let the groom decide this one.

The song ended up being PERFECT on the day. Because nobody knew it, I think they really listened to the lyrics and noticed how “us” they were.

  • swarmofbees

Let’s Do It, Let’s Fall in Love, the Ella Fitzgerald version.

    • ART

      I LOVE that song!

  • l_weston

Ours will be “January Wedding” by the Avett Brothers. It’s our shared favorite Avett Bros song. We love them so much we named our puppy Avett, so it only seems right for our first dance.

    • Kaitlin

we chose Swept Away (Sentimental Version) by the Avett Brothers. I thought it might be too long, but it was great having a couple mins to just dance together!

      • l_weston

        That’s such a gorgeous song!

    • sarah l

some friends getting married next week are using this! they got engaged to it too.

      • l_weston

Adorable! We got to dance to it when they played it live last February in Madison and it’s one of our happiest memories.

    • Leah

We just got married 3 weeks ago (!!!!) and January Wedding was our first dance. We were a little concerned it would seem odd (since, you know, July), but we both love everything about the song, and it was totally perfect to dance to. And the band changed the words to “July” a couple times anyhow just to mix it up.

      • l_weston

It really is such a pretty song! It’s nice to find other “January Wedding” couples. Congratulations!

  • Lauren from NH

I don’t know if it will wind up as our first dance song, we may go with something more upbeat, but I love love love “We Don’t Eat” by James Vincent McMorrow, to me it captures this indescribable feeling of “god” and hope and love….see I can’t describe it, you have to listen to the song.

  • joanna b.n.

Come Rain or Come Shine, Ray Charles.

  • anonpsu

“Do you remember”-Jack Johnson. What I’m most excited about is that my walking down the aisle song is going to be a string quartet playing “Just the Way you are” by Bruno Mars. It sounds so beautiful with strings and I can’t wait! What we can’t decide is our “entrance song”. I’m actually leaning towards saying “screw it” and going with Sweet Child of Mine just because we both love it.

    • That sounds beautiful! I’ll have to think about arranging “Just the Way You Are” for my string trio. Also, we totally played a wedding in which the bride came in to the ceremony (!!!) to a strings arrangement we wrote of “Sweet Child O’ Mine” and it was awesome.

  • bsc

We danced to “This I Promise You” by Ronan Keating – it is NOT a cover of the N*Sync version – it is totally different. Neither of us had heard it before, and we both immediately loved it!

  • Anonymous

I wanna be your lover — Prince

  • lildutchgrrl

We didn’t have dancing, but if we were going to have a first dance, it would be to “All the Way” sung by Lena Horne. It’s kinda got the same vibe as “At Last”, but is much less common. (My wife proposed during that song, and it was the soundtrack on our wedsite.)

  • Allison Andres

We had our actual “first dance” to “Northern Sky” by Nick Drake…but after most of the guests left, he and I got down to Paul Simon’s “You Can Call Me Al” since it’s a favorite of ours.

    • Ally

Adorable! We used Northern Sky in our pre-ceremony playlist, good choice!

  • Lizzy

We danced to Sleeping at Last’s cover of 500 Miles (I’m Gonna Be). It was soft, meaningful, and nerdy all at the same time, while reflecting on the end of our long distance relationship.

    • Violet

Can’t wait to listen to this version; thanks for posting! This song is one of my favs, and we played the original version during the cocktail hour.

  • Michigan Sara

“Stand by Me” by Ben E. King.

    • Violet

      So classic, so good.

    • Bb

I have been wondering why this hasn’t been mentioned! So perfect!

    • Callan

Us too! It’s lucky that we picked a “classic song” because every now and then it still comes on the radio (or even on the loudspeaker at the grocery store) and we get to relive that moment all over again in the middle of our everyday stuff.

  • Katie Mattaini

We danced to “That’s Beautiful to Me” by Jaron & The Long Road to Love.

  • Emily

    “Feeling Good,” Nina Simone.

    • Lian

      Me too!

  • Jill

“Come what May” from Moulin Rouge. Note to anyone considering it – GORGEOUS song and (for us) perfect for a first dance but MAN is it long. As people who “dance” by kind of shuffling/swaying, we were over it about 1.5 minutes in to what has to be a 4-min song. Consider this when you’re choosing and either have your DJ cut it/fade it out/ or invite others to dance with you if you feel like you may be dreading continuing to be stared at :)

    • Fiona

      OMG I LOVE this song.

    • Jess1216

Yes, I second cutting almost any song to about 1 minute! Songs are so much longer than I realized! :)

      • Ashley

THIRD! My DH and I took lessons so our song length was perfect because we knew what we were doing (and I think the runtime is only about 3 minutes) but for our parent dance (we did a combined mother/son father/daughter) – EEEESHHHH it took FOREVER! I even whispered to my dad “Did he (the DJ) lengthen this somehow?!”. We (the parents & B&G) danced to “Teach Your Children” by Crosby Stills & Nash and we needed like….half the length of the song.

    • Louise

This was ours too! I ended up cracking and waving up other couples to join us after a couple of minutes which turned out to be awesome :) It was the point in the reception where I ended up finally crying and was a surprise romantic pick from the husband during the planning process.

    • Meagan

I am processing to Come What May! I’m so excited. And I’m hoping that it works out so that I reach the end of the aisle as the first verse ends…

  • mstrsofpmbrly

“Wildflowers” by Tom Petty. Not exactly a love song, but it always makes me think of long summer roadtrips with my fiance.

    • Casey

I walked down the aisle to that song…love it so much and I get all weepy every time I hear it!

      • mstrsofpmbrly

Aww! I love to hear that!

    • Kaitlin

I’m using that song for a father-daughter dance!

  • Jessica

    “The Gambler” by Fun.

  • macrain

    “Falling” By Ben Kweller.

  • Fiona

My fiance is a SERIOUS dancer. I’m not great, but I try. He wants a merengue tune, and something romantic. Any suggestions?

    • Sarah E

No song suggestions, but if you pick a merengue, you’ll be set for the dancing. All you do is march to the beat, in whatever direction he leads you!

    • Katie Schwing

We had a friend request a few merengue songs for our wedding playlist. It was totally a hit. I don’t know Spanish, so I’m not sure how romantic these are, but:

La Makina, No Me Digas Que No
Zafra Negra, No Loores Por Ella
      Elvis Crespo, Suavemente
      Elvis Crespo, Pintame

      • Fiona

I’ll pitch them to the man and see what he says! Thanks!!

  • Marlena

We are having a friend do a mash-up of Queen’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” and the Darkness’s “I Believe in a Thing called Love”.

    • cschaffner

Our recessional was a string version of I Believe in a Thing Called Love, and then we used the normal version for our entrance. It was SO much fun! Your idea sounds awesome!!

  • Alyssa

We danced to our song, which is “Strawberry Swing” by Coldplay. It’s been ours since he took me to the Coldplay concert at the Gorge in WA in 2005, where we moved from tentatively interested to falling pretty hard. Brings back happy memories every time I hear that song!

  • Amie Melnychuk

Ours was “Can’t Take my Eyes Off of You” by Franki Valli and the Four Seasons. Man, did we ever cut a rug!

  • Faith

    “Golden Days” by The Damnwells

  • Irene

As The World Falls Down, by David Bowie (aka the song in Labyrinth).

    • Lizzie G

      This is the greatest.

  • Ariel

Ours was “Let it be me” by Ray LaMontagne. We would listen to him over many long car rides as we were falling in love.

  • Teresa

God Only Knows by the Beach Boys, though I REALLY wanted it to be Just Like Heaven by The Cure, but that’s a little hard to dance to! Also, I feel much more mushy when I hear our cake cutting song, I will by The Beatles, than I do when I hear God Only Knows…not sure why!

  • Julia27

We’re not sure if we’re doing a first dance yet (still need to pick and send out invitations….), but here are some songs that make us feel all the warm fuzzies:

    Falling Slowly from Once
    Without You by Eddie Vedder
    Time by Joy Ike

  • ART

This thread is making me think I really need to charge up my ipod and start listening to music in my car again!

  • Pileofstix

I’ve always thought Ratatat’s “Mi Viejo” would be perfect. :3

  • We didn’t really have a first dance at our wedding. (We used “When I’m 64 as our recessional, though!)

We had a first dance a month later at our after party and used “This Will Be Our Year” by the Zombies.

    • ART

Our recessional was All You Need Is Love (the horns at the beginning started at the kiss – it was so great!)

      • Sarah

Love the Beatles! Possibly my favourite scene in Love Actually is at the end of the wedding when the couples’ friends surprise them by playing/miming All You Need Is Love

    • Annie

We did “This Will Be Our Year” as well. I like that it’s a super positive song and doesn’t last so long that the dancing gets awkward.

    • I played a wedding in which the bride and groom walked in together to “When I’m 64” and recessed to the song played in the cantina scene in Star Wars! :)

      • All Spice

We used The Cantina song for our cake cutting!

        • Kat

Oh my gosh this is genius. My fiance would love if we used the Cantina song. Or maybe the theme from “Indiana Jones”…

      • LOVE IT!!!!!

  • Michelle M.

Baby by She & Him – fairly upbeat, short, and just darling!

  • artfulword

Naked as We Came – Iron and Wine

    • artfulword

though we will possibly do I Will by the Beatles

    • julianneclamcake

  • Ashley

“The Book of Love” by The Magnetic Fields.

It was originally going to be “Real Love” by John Lennon (piano version), but my partner recently revealed that it reminds him of some not-so-happy times in his life. We considered whether he could just replace those memories with new happy memories, but he decided he would rather dance to a song that reminded him only of me (d’aw).

  • Ours was “Stuck on You” by Meiko

  • C R

“This Kind of Love” – Sister Hazel.

We also had two runners up that we used in the ceremony: “Rose of My Heart” – Johnny Cash, and “Home” – Phillip Phillips, both performed by my little brother on his acoustic guitar. :)

    • Amanda L

We also had our runners up – Sail Away by David Gray and In Your Eyes (the Jeffrey Gaines version) – played by our good friend on his acoustic guitar during the ceremony. Great minds :)

    • KitBee

Sister Hazel!!! One of my favorite bands in high school (and thus in life).

  • Another Meg

“Riches and Wonders” by the Mountain Goats

    • SChaLA

We considered that one, but the alcohol lyric wasn’t right for us. I love it, though! So real.

  • SuperJ

“Rainbow Connection” sung by Trespassers William

  • Ours was “Sparks” by Coldplay, which isn’t exactly a lovey-dovey song, but we liked it, and it makes me smile to hear it now.

    • Ally

that song always makes me cry…like most coldplay songs :)

  • Jess1216

NOTHING about wedding-planning elicited such strong feelings from my husband as our first dance song. As a result, I acquiesced pretty quickly to his request for “The Way You Look Tonight” even though it wasn’t even on my top ten list. He cared *so much* about this one thing that I couldn’t find it in my mean little heart to say no. He was right – it was a sweet song and worked perfectly.

  • Rose

Nowhere near actually deciding this yet, but the song I’ve been thinking about is Arlo Guthrie’s The Wedding Song, which I want to incorporate somewhere and might be a good dance song. My dad has been playing that song for me since before I can remember, so it might also be a candidate for a father-daughter dance, but I do also think it would be lovely for a first dance. I’ll be interested to keep checking this thread, though.

  • Stephanie B.

Our first song was “More Than You Know,” covered by Dr. John.

But I remembered Meg’s post about the importance of the last song, and so we made our last song “At Last.”

  • kasaro

we’re using “naive melody (this must be the place)” by the talking heads. it’s been our song for ages. also thinking of using “broom people” by the mountain goats in our ceremony.

    • SarahG

I LOVE that Talking Heads song. Love. It.

    • Alison M

We’re using This Must Be the Place as our processional, I think.

    • SChaLA

Can we be best friends? We’re using This Must Be The Place for our first dance, and Sax Rohmer #1 for our processional. I’m glad you’ve found happiness.

  • Kristin

Jack Johnson, “Better Together” – It’s a beautiful song and perfectly sums up how we both think about the partnership of marriage. I get the warm fuzzies whenever I hear it!

    • Jess

Love this song…it’s what I’ll be walking down the aisle to :)

    • Jane

Our song, too. It’s really popular in Hawaii, where we live, but I didn’t care. We had our cocktail musician–a guitarist–play it for us and it was lovely. Now I always start crying when I hear it.

    • We did that too! I like that it’s upbeat and sweet but not sappy.

  • Megera

We’re planning on dancing to Home, by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros: we moved internationally about 6 months ago, and it’s been pretty tough. It’s a cheesy song, but I guess we are a cheesy couple!

    • SarahG

Do it! It’s “our song” and we’re having friends who are musical play it at the end of the ceremony. Totally support the cheese :)

    • Oh, when is cheesy ok if not at your wedding?

    • Jenny

This was our recessional! So great!

    • elysiarenee

We very nearly used this one !

  • Sunday Kind of Love, Etta James

    • Nell

That song is GORGEOUS, and I don’t know why people don’t use it more often in weddings.

  • Traceluna

“These Are the Fables” by The New Pornographers.

We had a tough time picking a first dance song–my husband wanted something quirky and original, and I wanted something slow and sentimental. I went through APW lists and lots of other lists trying to find the right fit, and we talked about it for a solid year before the wedding. One night, I put on a Spotify playlist with the half-dozen or so serious contenders and we danced to each of the songs. He got so happy and goofy when “These Are the Fables” that I caved. At our wedding, we danced slowly to parts of it and then struck dramatic silly poses at the loud parts (and my husband had a huge grin on his face!). It was perfect.

    • Traceluna

Also, our last song was OK Go’s cover of “This Will Be Our Year.”

  • Alden

    Real Love by Regina Spektor

It’s originally a Beatles song, which has a very sentimental meaning to my dad and me. Regina’s version is absolutely beautiful and has so much meaning to it for my fiance and I.

  • Sarah

Aimee Mann & Michael Penn’s cover of “Two of Us.” So glad we picked this one!

  • KK

Ours was Bubbly by Colbie Callait. Not exactly a deep song, but sweet and one that we heard for the first time together so neither of us had other memories attached to it. For me, the first time I hear a song (or start to recognize it) is always sort of attached to the song… so I wanted to pick something that came out after we got together. I also love that I hear it on the radio every now and then and get to think about our wedding night!

    • Ally

I played water polo with her in high school – she’s adorable!

    • We recessed to “I Do” by Colbie Callait! Super cute.

  • Alden

    Love this one!

  • Mo

We had our DJ mix up a special song for our first dance:

“(God Must’ve Spent) a Little More Time on You” – N*Sync…which then transitioned into “Feel So Close” by Calvin Harris.

    That floor was ROCKIN’.

  • Hannah

    “The Most” by Jon Troast

  • Casey

“Forever” by Ben Harper – it was on a mix cd I made my husband when we first started dating

  • Caitlin_DD

If we have one, I’m pulling for “Moondance,” the Michael Buble version.

  • Cathi

My husband insisted the dance be a waltz, because apparently the week before our wedding he was hit in the head and forgot how to dance to any other time signature.

“Come Away With Me” by Norah Jones ended up being our pick. It meant nothing to us other than being “waltzy” and “not super cliche”, and honestly still doesn’t mean much to us.

I personally wish we’d danced to something more personal, but oh well. Plenty of time for special dancing in the future.

    • carolynprobably

fwiw, I am deeply in the camp that everything wedding doesn’t have to *mean something*. A first dance song can just be that, the first song that you dance to.

  • sarah l

“Next to Me” by Emile Sande

  • KB

Grow Old With You from The Wedding Singer. Cute and – most importantly – short!

    • ashley

we played that during our cake cutting – love it!

    • MC

AWWWWW Fiance put this as a secret last track on a mix cd he made for me when we first started dating – it always makes me tear up just thinking about it!

  • macrain

If it appears that I posted in this thread over and over, it’s bc my comments were accidentally being designated as spam and deleted. Disqus just fixed it for me and approved all of my comment attempts, so now they are all here. Thanks for making me look like a weirdo, technology!

    • Lauren from NH

Haha, I noticed you kept disappearing.

  • Jess

    Jason Mraz – “Love Someone”

  • Kristin

Ours is Turning Page by Sleeping at Last….FI is super into Twilight (haha right?) and I do really like this song. It’s pretty slow but I don’t mind!

    • Lauren from NH

Haha my mister loves Christina Perri’s A Hundred Years because of Twilight. Don’t get me wrong, a beautiful song, but not due to the movie in my book.

      • Kristin

Yea I didn’t actually realize that both of these songs were written specifically for the movies until we were looking at first dance songs, both still pretty songs. And I don’t even like Twilight haha.

  • Songs!

The Way I Am by Ingrid Michaleson

  • Cara

First dance was “Stay Young, Go Dancing” by Death Cab for Cutie. And our last dance I was particularly psyched about: “And We Danced” by Macklemore!

  • aldeka

We haven’t decided for sure yet, but I’m rooting for “Love Interruption” by Jack White. It’s short, it’s pretty, it captures our relationship well, and FH loves the song. And it would probably fly better than “Sex Is Not the Enemy” by Garbage…

  • annie

We danced to The Book of Love by the Magnetic Fields. Our friend said it sounded like a kindergarten song, but I love it.

At first we thought we would do something fast, and were planning to dance to You’re My Best Friend by Queen, but then we realized we were pretty terrible dancers.

    • notquitecece

I want to use “When my boy walks down the street” for our aisle-walking!

    • anon

If anyone else is thinking of The Book of Love I recommend checking out a cover version by a band called Now Its Overhead. I actually prefer their version over the original (less of the kindergarten feel). Great song either way.

    • karyn_arden

We signed our marriage license to The Book of Love. It turned out to be the perfect length!

    • My best friend and her husband used The Book of Love by Peter Gabriel for their first dance. It was so sweet.

    • Kristina

We did “You’re My Best Friend” by Queen, but had to take dancing lessons…so I feel you there! We took two hours of private swing dancing lessons and got a basic down with a few turns. It was enough that we didn’t feel stressed out about learning too much, and we didn’t make too big of fools of ourselves (I think!).

    • Ashley

That’s our song, and I love that it has a silly feel to it. That’s love to me. It’s silly-sweet. I can’t wait for our first dance.

  • Natalie

“You Fill Up My Senses” – John Denver but it’ll be sung by a friend of ours :). It’s the perfect blend of meaningful and not overly popular for us

    • lori

Having my cousins and aunt play this during the processional.

  • Cait

“If not for you,” the George Harrison version

    • meeliebee

      LOVE that song!

  • Rachelle

We had such a hard time agreeing on a song, but ended up with “Stay With You” by John Legend and we both loved it! It’s easy to “sway” to and the lyrics are simple and sweet :)

    • Acres_Wild

That’s our front runner right now! Beautiful song and perfect lyrics. We both loved All Of Me when it came out but then it got so popular that we decided to pick something else. Can’t be too mainstream, you know. ;)

      • Lauren M Brace

We’re having the same problem. LOVED “All of Me”, but we’re not getting married until next September and I know i’ll be over it by then.

  • Blair

“I Got You” by Jack Johnson – the words make me tear up. Even thinking about it makes me tear up. 18 days!!!!

  • Stephanie

We wanted something by Jimmy Buffett, but not something cheesy, so we chose his cover of “Anything, Anytime, Anywhere”.

    • Lindsey Smith

Whoa, going to look this up ASAP. My fiance and I love Buffett (and he made me slightly obsessed) so I was hoping we could use either Buffett or Disney, but most of Buffett’s songs aren’t really wedding songs :P

  • SarahG

So, we wanted to dance to Pokerface by Lady Gaga because it has a lot of happy memories (the first time I saw my partner dance, which is an adorable and amazing sight) but other people have kinda talked us out of it (would be off putting to the oldsters etc) so I think we’re going to do Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing by Marvin Gaye and invite others to the floor about a minute in, since neither of us is super jazzed about slow dancing in front of a crowd (and the Marvin song has happy memories of a good vacation).

    • carolynprobably

      Eff it. Go with Gaga.

    • Violet

Whatever you decide, you two can always rock it out to Pokerface later, even if it isn’t “showcased” as your first song. My partner and I irrationally love Mr. Brightside by The Killers, which is, ahem, not appropriate as a first dance song, so we made it our last rock it out song. Honestly, it worked so well that way. : )

  • Katie Schwing

“We Could Be Looking for the Same Thing” by the Silver Jews. I downloaded and burned the album it is on for my now-husband very very early in our relationship. We first listened to it together on the couch in my rented house more than six years ago. This has always been the closest thing we have to “our song,” and there was a bit of debate about it in the week leading up to the wedding because we are not big dancers and it’s a tad on the fast side for the shuffle and sway type of dancing that we are so good at.

Turns out the first thought was the best thought: It was the perfect song. Couldn’t have imagined a better moment to share with him, and it seemed to bring everything full circle. Also it’s pretty short :)

  • “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz. It followed us home so we kept it. In the year leading up to our marriage it played on the radio almost every time we got in the car.

    • Ali

This is going to be ours in 2 months. It just fits us and the night we met we spend a lot of time making funny faces at each other because our mutual friends were busy reminiscing high school and so we love the line “But my breath fogged up the glass so I drew a new face and I laughed”.

  • Laura

Landon Pigg, “Falling in Love at a Coffeeshop.” Because….well, that’s how we fell in love :)

    • Amanda Van Mil

I LOVE this song! Whenever it comes on my Pandora station, I pretty much stop what I’m doing and just revel in it!

  • Amanda

“Me and You” by Kenny Chesney. Shortly before the wedding, ‘I Choose You’ by Sara Bareilles came out and we really liked that too so we made it our cake cutting song.

  • Liz Nelson Lui

We didn’t have a first dance, but the song we picked for the processional would probably have be the one had we danced. It’s “If the Stars Were Mine” by Melody Gardot, a really sweet one!

  • nf

Since you’ve asked, by Judy Collins. A bit hard to dance to but the lyrics make it perfect.

    • Violet

Oooh, I chose Judy Collins’ version of Who Knows Where the Time Goes for the father/daughter dance (shortened it, obviously). Ditto on the tricky to dance too, but beautiful lyrics.

  • SChaLA

Ours is “Naive Melody (This Must Be The Place)” by Talking Heads :)

  • Ally

Moon River as sung by the perfect Audrey Hepburn.

It’s always made me a little misty eyed and it was the shortest slow song we could find at just over 2 min.

    • Ally

runners up (which made up our pre-ceremony playlist) include:

You’re the Storm – The Cardigans (probably my fav song of all time)
Just Like Honey – Jesus and Mary Chain
acoustic version of Everlong – Foo Fighters

      • elysiarenee

your runners up are very lovely also :)

    • elle em

The Audrey Hepburn version was one of my secret choices but it doesn’t resonate with the wife like it does with me. And we did the same kind of thing for a pre-ceremony playlist. My musical taste is generally too melancholy for processional/recessional/first dance so we stuck a lot of my faves in the pre-ceremony music and hearing it play when people were arriving was one of my favorite things!

      • Hannah

High five for having more-melancholy-than-average taste in music! My ladyfriend will ask me to put on something “upbeat” while we’re cooking dinner, and ten minutes later, she’ll be like, “So, all these songs about death and break-ups.” I just think music can make you feel good, even if it’s a bit wistful!

        • smawhort

I’ll third that! My number one cheer-up song is ‘Don’t Get Around Much Anymore’. Never fails.

    • Myranda

      This was our Father/Daughter song!

  • Caitlin

My fiance and I have a history of hosting spontaneous Disney karaoke parties, so we are going to use “Kiss the Girl.” The best part is that the music will be provided by our guests singing along to my brother’s mandolin :)

    • Heather

      This is amazing.

  • meghan

“Real Love” by Regina Spektor (a cover of an unreleased Beatles song) :)

  • Amy Sigmon

“Forget Me Not,” by The Civil Wars. We like to think it was a little bit unique!

    • KerryMarie

we’re doing a Civil Wars song for our processional. love them!

  • Jenny

We chose Murder in the City, by the Avett Brothers. We didn’t tell anyone the title of the song, just said it was by the Avett Brothers. I and Love and You is another great first dance song by them.

    • l_weston

“Murder in the City” makes me want to cry sentimental love tears every time! So much (not just siblings) can be described with “Always remember there was nothing worth sharing like the love that let us share our name” Cheers to fellow Avett Brothers lovers.

      • Jenny

Yeah, he actually chose that song as his way to explain why he thought we should discuss changing names. Previous discussions had been somewhat, ahem heated, mostly on my part. But this was what got to me, it was what allowed us to have a conversation as Jenny and K, not Jenny v the patriarchy. And we felt like it also held a lot of marriage themes, what was important to us, what we wanted to be remembered. For me it also helped let go of (or come to peace with) my fear of losing my husband. My father died when I was younger, and I watched my mom deal with that. It was painful, and one of my huge fears was being widowed and feeling all that pain (plus more and different).

We had been searching and talking about a few different ones, but they never felt right. This wedding decision was my equivalent of the magic dress moment.

We put it on, and it just felt right.

      • Lauren M Brace

I love this song, but my FH is a Police Officer in a pretty dangerous neighborhood in our city and I think the first line MAY be taken the wrong way. Ho Hum.

    • macaroni

I briefly thought about that for our first dance, but I can’t get through it without bawling my eyes out, so we decided against it. If I could better control my emotions it would be the one!

  • C

our first dance: “No Children” – The Mountain Goats
    father-daughter dance: “Let’s Go Crazy” – Prince
mother-son dance: “What a Wonderful World” – Louis Armstrong

    • b.

“No Children”? Very curious what drew you to that song as a first dance song! If you don’t want to answer that’s totally fine and I know different songs can mean different things to different people, but that song would be among the last that I would personally think of as a wedding song! But I’m sure you get that a lot, hah.

      • SChaLA

Speaking just for myself: No Children kind of has cult cache as a wedding song among tMG fans. We won’t have it at the wedding proper, but it’s kind of a tradition in our friend group to belt it out drunkenly at the afterparty.

I mean, the Alpha couple kind of embodies one ideal of marriage in that they refuse to leave each other, no matter how horrible things get. It’s definitely dark, though.

      • elysiarenee

I love No Children and was shocked the first time I heard of it being used as a wedding song but after many years of reflection I can see how there’s something romantic about the raw together-to-the-bitter-end vibe.

  • Lizzie

“That’s Where It’s At” by Sam Cooke

  • Bsquillo

Since we’re jazz nerds, ours was “Dedicated to You,” a great old jazz standard. My personal opinion on “At Last,” is that it’s a little overdone, but if you’re going to use it, at least use the Etta recording, not some inferior cover. (I know, I’m being a snob.)

Side note: my husband put Seal’s “Kiss From A Rose” on our cocktail hour playlist as a joke, and one of my bridesmaids switched the ipod to that song right as we got up for our cake cutting. And the volume was CRANKED. It was hilarious, and a little dramatic.

    • Violet

Hahaha, I LOVE the Kiss from a Rose cake cutting scenario! Too funny!

  • SJ

We danced to “Shameless” by Garth Brooks. It was excellent for the swaying/cry-kissing we managed to do!

  • Ashley

We danced to “Overjoyed” by Matchbox 20. We (okay…I) are huge MB20 fans and I was googling for different first dance options. This song ended up in my YouTube search bar and the video is so sweet – I started crying and was like “THIS IS IT!”. DH loved it, thankfully, and it had a really nice, slow beat – we took dance lessons, and the song was perfect for all the fun twirls and steps we learned. Plus, it’s not common/overplayed – so we put it on and slow dance in our living room and it’s really special because we never hear it on the radio/out and about.

    • Ashley

Also…”our” song has always been “Just What I Needed” by the Cars – which doesn’t lend itself well to slow dancing, so it was one of a handful of songs on our must-play list at our wedding. And we missed it because we were outside taking sunset portraits. Womp womp. So future brides/grooms/whomevers – if you have a song that you absolutely MUST dance to, be sure to tell your DJ that you want to be present when said song is played.

  • KatieGoesGallivanting

Nothing More by the Alternate Routes – I loved how the words are something that are meaningful in any relationship, not just for weddings. They are lyrics that we can go back to and remember how we should treat each other and anyone else we encounter.

I recommend practicing how you’ll dance to whatever song you end up picking. We didn’t, and the first verse was a little awkward as we tried to figure out what we were doing. We got some great pictures of us laughing though. :)

  • ktmarie

We did Fly me to the Moon (Sinatra) – not too long, not too slow, fun ‘big moments’ for twirling.

PS I hope APW’s compiling a graph or statistics on all this! Even just an easy to read list and I’ll volunteer to statistic-ify (?) it

    • Ally

or turn it into a Spotify playlist…??

      • carolynprobably

        um, both please.

    • Steph

We also did Fly me to the Moon, partly because we took a ballroom-dancing-for-your-wedding class and basically were only comfortable with a fox trot to something that sounded a lot like classic Sinatra. I kind of wanted to do I Get a Kick Out of You instead but neither of us thought grandparents would be thrilled with the cocaine reference. It was great for us! Super easy to dance to.

  • A.

Ours was “All the Way.” Funny story- I wanted the original Sinatra version, but I also found a duet version (done with techno-magic after Sinatra died) with Celine Dion. I played them both for my husband and we danced in my living room to see which one he liked better. I totally expected him to pick the original version because it’s almost a minute shorter and he doesn’t really like dancing, and because I thought there was NO WAY my grunge-rock loving guy would ever voluntarily listen to Celine Dion. Afterwards he said, “Let’s use the duet version. It’s our wedding day and I want two voices, not just one.” AWWWW!

    • Hannah

      That story is adorable!

  • Brianne

We chose “Hold Me, Kiss Me, Thrill Me” sung by She + Him

  • Kate

My FH and I aren’t the dancing type, so I couldn’t use this as a serious one, but we are ‘opening the dance floor’ by having 2 brothers who are close friends of ours do a full on dance-party to ‘What is Love’ by Haddaway.

  • Kat

We’re considering Everything by Michael Buble or All I’m Thinking Of by Tyrone Wells. We’re both ballroom dancers, though, so great waltzes, rumbas, or night club 2-steps suggestions would be welcome!

  • Alison O

    lionel richie, “all night long”

great if you want a first dance that you want other guests to join part of the way thru, as well, cuz it builds, y’all, it builds

  • Alison M

Al Green – Let’s Stay Together. It’s what my boyfriend wanted, and he hasn’t expressed a ton of opinions, so I’m okay with it. Plus, who can argue with Al Green? I’m amazed I haven’t seen any other Al Green songs here.

    • mcguire10

That’s our first dance song too!
It was the first song we slow danced to which was spontaneous in my living room. At first I thought he was crazy cause it’s a little bit on the fast side, but I realized it was the right one to go with.

    • Alison M

Sidenote: I don’t really know how to dance, so I youtubed people dancing to this song today and all of them look SO RIDICULOUS. I’m not sure if that makes me feel happy (we won’t look worse than the rest of them) or sad (how on earth do we dance without looking like fools?)

  • Sfkat

The whole of the law, yo la tengo cover. We were previously thinking of doing the Beatles Do you want to know a secret, but we can just sway to whole of the law. Plus, we do open water swimming together so it’s perfect for us.

  • M

“Can’t Go Back Now” by The Weepies. Actually written about a kid’s first steps, but it was perfect for us!

    • elle em

ah, The Weepies! I love that one, good choice.

We walked down the aisle to “Somebody Loved” and it always brings me to tears. They named their band perfectly :)

  • KitBee

OK, so I’m not actually married (or *ahem* in a relationship)…but if I were getting married tomorrow, my first dance song would be “Have a Little Faith in Me” by John Hiatt (slow and sentimental). Or “Let My Love Open the Door” by Pete Townshend (upbeat and cheerful), or “You Send Me” by Sam Cooke (classic).

    • Heather

“Have a Little Faith in Me” is a favorite of mine for years and years…

  • KerryMarie

We’re doing “You Send Me” by Sam Cooke

    • Beth

      This was our song, too.

  • Laurel

Dear Someone — Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings

    • ART

      oooh nice!

  • C

We went with “Little Wonders” from the movie Meet the Robinsons.

  • Lisa

I think the first thing we decided about our wedding was that we would be dancing to “It Only Took a Kiss” by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. My fiancé played it for me once, and afterwards, if I was ever having a bad day, he would send me the link or put it on and dance me around the kitchen. :)

    • Lauren M Brace

Oh man, this may be the one.

      • Lisa

Do it!! I am absolutely in love with it. I feel like the instrumental break in the middle really needs a great softshoe number or some kind of choreography. If only I had the time to coordinate that!

  • Sarah

“In the Aeroplane Over the Sea” by Neutral Milk Hotel

    • elysiarenee

      This was our processional! *love*

  • Penfield

Emmylou Harris & John Prine – “Magnolia Wind.” My fiance picked it. (Edited so that it was not so long) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCLZnCiH_k0

    • Ellen

We were very close to set on “Naive Melody (This Must be the Place)” and, having just listened to this song, I’m wavering. It’s beautiful.

      • Penfield

        Ah, tough decision!

One thing I liked it about it is that I hadn’t really heard it in any other context — other than hearing my fiance play it on his computer and then eventually him suggesting it as our first dance. Somehow only knowing the song as “potential first dance number” made it seem more like it was written for us and more special. Although I also get that having a lot of context and history associated with a song would be cool too!

  • Gina

“You and I” by Ingrid Michaelson. It fit us so well, and I still cry every time I hear it. I really wanted to use the Devotchka cover of “Something Stupid,” but my husband hates dancing and worried that we’d have to do more than just sway for that one.

  • Amanda Van Mil

    “Heavenly Day” by Patty Griffin

    • ASH

      Me too!

  • McKenna

“What a Wonderful World” Louis Armstrong

  • Sara

“This Will Be Our Year” by The Zombies

    • Em(ily)

We are using the Foo Fighters’ cover of this song.

    • lori

This was our second pick, because dang it, this better be our year.

  • Kara E

We danced to “Almost Like Being in Love” (played by our band). Given the whole surreal feeling of the day, it was a nice cap. ;)

    • ART

aw i had that stuck in my head my whole wedding week :)

  • AlisonHendryx

“Little Trip to Heaven,” Tom Waits. (Everyone gives us funny looks when we say it, but it’s a beautiful love song that sounds nothing like his normal stuff except his awesome voice, and because it’s Tom Waits no one has used it before in our social circle.

    • Dom

That is our pick too! It is such a beautiful song, and our group has a lot of musicians (the fiance plays bass in 3 bands) so everyone will appreciate the connection with the artist.

    • elysiarenee

We used All The World is Green in our ceremony. Tom waits is excellent

  • “What a Wonderful World” Louis Armstrong

  • Lizzie G

“Picture in a Frame”- Tom Waits

  • Grace from England

We probably won’t do a first dance, but I’ve secretly always wanted Yellow by Coldplay. Or Everlong by Foo Fighters. We could do a version of dancing that no dancer would recognise…

  • Aimée Storm

If we had done a first dance, my top pick was “All About Us – He is We”

  • “By My Side” Ben Harper

  • Jessica

We danced to Something, by the Beatles. If I were getting married now, I would insist on All of Me by John Legend- how perfect is that song?

We went back and forth for weeks on what we wanted, and I lobbied hard for The Book Of Love by Magnetic Fields, but he really wanted something by the Beatles. We ended up choosing moments before walking into our DJ’s office and handing in our song list!

FWIW, my father-daughter dance was to Forever Young by Rod Stewart (it’s a special song between my dad and I, and he actually surprised me by singing it to me! Everyone had tears in their eyes) and my husband’s mother-son dance was to Julia by the Beatles (according to him, John Lennon wrote it for his mom, so he thought it appropriate).

  • HannahESmith

We choose Green Eyes by Coldplay. My husband has green eyes, and it has been our song since we first started dating. We sang it to each other during our first dance.

    • Grace from England

    • Manda

“Green Eyes” is going to be our first dance song too! Basically for the same reasons you’ve listed, but I’m the one with the green eyes. :)

      • Manda

Also, my sister got married a few weeks ago, and she added “Green Eyes” to her reception soundtrack so my partner and I could practice our dancing skills. The photographer snapped a picture of us singing along that I LOVE.

        • HannahESmith

          This is so sweet!

        • Sarah

That’s adorable! My FH and I both love Coldplay and Green Eyes is one of my favourites… But he has brown eyes and mine are blue so perhaps it’s not the best choice :-(

I would also like to play Reign of Love during the ceremony as it’s so beautiful, but the lyrics are actually pretty weird and I think it might be about a break up!

      • Meredith

My husband and his band serenaded me with green eyes at our reception. Such a lovely song.

  • We had my sister-in-law sing La Vie en Rose. Choosing a song was HARD. I don’t like overly sappy songs while husband has one heck of a cheesy side. He also really wanted his sister to sing and originally the plan was for his mom to play piano (that didn’t end up happening, but was a factor when we were picking a song to begin with).

Husband was happy that his sister was singing and it was reasonably traditional and romantic song. I was happy because I don’t know any French which cut the sappiness for me. Plus it reminds me of Sabrina and despite my very un-sappy side I do love me some Audrey Hepburn.

  • Ruth

We used the Henry Mancini version of “Moon River,” because we had been taking dance lessons and really wanted to do a waltz. But I totally lean toward classic/old. :-)

  • Amber Smith

“In an Aeroplane Over the Sea” by Neutral Milk Hotel. It was the first song my FH played for me on the guitar and the lyrics are super romantic “What a beautiful face I have found in this place that is circling all around the sun.” There’s a bit of “till death do us part, then we’ll find each other in heaven” vibe in the song.

  • Emag

I’d love to hear people weigh in on the slow/sway songs versus the cheerful/upbeat songs. Were you happy to have a quiet moment to just rock back and forth or did you feel more like getting down with something more energetic?

  • Violet

“At My Most Beautiful” by R.E.M.

  • Violet

    Awww, love this song!

  • carolynprobably

“By the Way They Dance” by Jump, Little Children. (Which, now that I think of it is kind of funny since he’s not much for dancing.)

Picking a song didn’t end up being the sentimental Olympic event it is for a lot of people and the song didn’t have a ton of meaning for us before, or since. We mostly picked it for being kind of obscure, for the sappy lyrics being mostly incomprehensibly mumbled, and for us having both been Jump fans in high school.

    • Ali

I love JLC! Such a good song

  • Erin

We are doing my fiance’s pick “True Love Ways” by Buddy Hollyfor the first dance and my pick “I’ve had the Time of My Life” from Dirty Dancing for the last dance since his is more romantic and mine will be more fun for a big drunk sing-a-long with our friends.

    • Brianne Archer

Our second-to-last dance was “Time of my Life” but then the DJ followed it up with “All I Want Is You” by U2.

  • Marybeth

Don’t judge, but we danced to “All for Love” by Bryan Adams. Our bolero was my favorite part of the whole evening http://youtu.be/Ukoq8Uk_UFg.

    • Heather

Oh my heavens. I love this song, I loved your dance, and I LOVE YOUR DRESS! What a happy thing to get to see!!

  • Amie

Our DJ played parts from both “Say a Little Prayer for Me” by Aretha Franklin and “Flesh and Blood” by Johnny Cash. It was amazing and perfectly summed up my husband and I!

  • Liz

We didn’t have a song that felt like “ours” and then one day I heard “Happy” by Never Shout Never on a Pandora station. It was short, didn’t require choreography, and super sweet! It didn’t have deep meaning for us, but now it does!

  • Meredith D.

We danced to In a Little While by U2. I fell in love with the song when I was falling for him, it was on the first mixed CD I made for him, and it’s been our song for thirteen years.

    • cschaffner

      What a beautiful dress!!

      • Meredith D.

    • Samdamda

Yes, can we please talk about your gorgeous dress for a moment? As in, where did that masterpiece come from because it’s EVERYTHING?

      • Meredith D.

Aww, thanks! It’s a customized version of the Avila Bay dress from Dolly Couture. http://dollycouture.com/collection/pink-label/avilabay-short-wedding-dress-2953.html They were great to work with, and when my dress arrived, it fit perfectly and I didn’t need to get it fitted.

        • Samdamda

Thank you!!! That site is exactly what I’ve been looking for. I’m assuming you had to visit one of their show rooms to get the back customized? It’s stunning.

  • YetAnotherMegan

We danced to The Story by Brandi Carlisle. Oddly enough, it made me more emotional in the months leading up to the wedding than when we were dancing to it. I think part of it was not really realizing how long the song is and it got hard to stay in the moment and not be acutely aware of the people staring at us. I’d probably do a shorter segment of it if I knew then what I know now.

  • Emily H

“Our Sweet Love” by the Beach Boys. Runner up was “These Arms of Mine” by Otis Redding

  • Leah

“Love You ’till the End” by The Pogues for our wedding last month.
We were going to use “The Luckiest” by Ben Folds, but we did an instrumental version of it for a processional instead.

  • April

We’re using “The Glory of Love” by Otis Redding. This was actually one of the earliest reception-related choices we made : )

  • karyn_arden

“The Aspidistra Flies” by Stars. And then we had an impromptu last dance to “Safe and Sound” by Hawksley Workman (which we also considered for our first dance, but decided it was too long).

    • A.

The Aspidistra Flies is one of our ‘must-plays’ though not our actual first dance. Amazing, gorgeous song.

All the umbrellas in London couldn’t hide my love for you…

  • LC

“Golden” by Lady Antebellum for first dance (my favourite line is: “the smallest parts of who you are, are everything to me”) and “Holding On To You” by Miranda Lambert for the last slow song.

  • moonlitfractal

We dance to a song called “This Heart of Mine” by Swedish progressive heavy metal band Pain of Salvation.

  • Holls

We did not have a first dance in the traditional manner, because I don’t like dancing and was dreading being the center of attention in that “all eyes on you while you sway awkwardly” way. We were not even having much dancing, just a small area where people could sort of dance if the urge overcame them to our iPod playlist of songs that my husband and I both enjoy.

However, (as is often the way of these tales) my happiest memory of our party is our completely impromptu first dance, where my husband came over where I was talking with some friends and said – “Oh my God, it’s the Bear and the Maiden Fair! WE HAVE TO DANCE TO THIS!”

I was having a fabulous time already and three or four French 75s in so (completely uncharacteristically) I said, “OMG! YES!” So, in the center of a circle of people clapping and watching us, we happily gave in to the overwhelming urge to dance a sort of awkward punk rock jig in our semi-formal wedding finery to Irish Moutarde’s “The Bear and the Maiden Fair”: http://youtu.be/zJ0rzsNfmIc

We only included this song in our playlist as a joke reference to our Game of Thrones obsession. But it was kind of perfect and random. We play it on anniversaries, whenever we want to celebrate something, when someone is feeling down, etc.

  • Molly P. Kopuru

Ours was “Boats and Birds” by Gregory and the Hawk. It’s one of the first songs my husband and I listened to together, so it was really special.

  • Rorabee

My Dearest Darling – another Etta song I couldn’t resist dancing to!

  • lori

“Song for the Asking” by Simon and Garfunkel, because Paul Simon just gets me. And it’s short, also very important.

  • Balrog Boogie by Diablo Swing Orchestra. Hopefully. Other half wants to take some dance lessons though.

  • Guest

“God Only Knows” by The Beach Boys

  • Erika

“God Only Knows by The Beach Boys

  • meeliebee

    “Calico Skies” by Paul McCartney!

  • Our first dance was At Last (the Etta James version, of course), which also happened to be the first song we ever danced to together. The last two songs of the night were “I Won’t Give Up” by Jason Mraz and “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri, which was also our processional (but the processional was the instrumental version by The Piano Guys). Loving all of these posts!

  • Lauren

Our first date was a Green Day concert, we got engaged at the Green Day American Idiot broadway show (where Billy Joe starred!), so it made sense that our first dance was Green Day. We chose Last Night on Earth as our first dance and Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) as our last song.

  • Lalaith

“Lover of the Light” by Mumford and Sons. Hubby and I discovered M&S together when they were just starting to be played on the radio, and we love them, but their first album didn’t really have any romantic songs on it. We were so hopeful when we found out that their second album was coming out about a month before our wedding – and luckily, it had this song :)

  • Kelsey

“I Want You to be My Love” by Over the Rhine

  • Megan Marie

Love this thread! Needing some first dance inspiration :) thanks!

  • Sarah McClelland

We’ve gotta come up with somethign zippy and swingy… lindy hop/east coast swing tempo.

I know I’ll dance with my dad to ‘My Girl’… My cousin got married Saturday and it was played at her reception and we looked at each other and that was that! He cut in on my FH and we finished out the song. It was sweet.

  • Our first dance was Ingrid Michaelson’s “The Way I Am”. Our cake cutting song was the Portal song “Still Alive” (by Jonathan Coulton) with all the great references to cake :) Plus our wedding was a triumph, huge success!

  • Meghan A

“What a difference a day makes” by Jamie Cullum.

  • whitlizflem

    Al Green’s “Simply Beautiful”

  • Penny7b

My Baby Just Cares for me by Nina Simone. We did a sort of slow-ish swing dance to it.

  • Kamena

Promise by Kellie Coffey (the “leaving Epcot song”)

It’s a beautiful song, and he picked it. we got engaged and he was like “I have a song for our first dance. please say yes!” I wasn’t sure, because he’s a goofball and I thought it might be something silly, but I heard it and it was such a pretty song I said we could use it.

  • Inmara

“Norwegian Wood” by Beatles, karaoke version. As we didn’t practice our first dance, we wanted to keep it as short and sweet as possible; lyrics were removed because they are not very appropriate for wedding day (like, some girl sleeps with a guy and then leaves him…) and I didn’t want anything in foreign language. Immediately after first dance we switched to rock’n’roll by live band, and everybody got on the dance floor, so we avoided any big expectations about our first dance as some kind of show.

  • EmilyRose

I went to a wedding where they had “The Book of Love” by Peter Gabriel, which was so beautiful we all cried!
We’re having “Us Against The World” by Coldplay, a) because it’s beautiful and b) because it’s Our Song.

  • laura

    Lovely Day by Bill Withers

  • Prue

Because I’m bed bound at the moment… I present the APW’s First Dance Songs Spotify playlist. Missing a few tracks that I couldn’t find and some aren’t necessarily the right versions but…http://open.spotify.com/user/1251124642/playlist/5u8QxukuZ0AvQCDlijyQsh

    • joanna b.n.

Thanks, Prue!!!!!!! You just made my week!

  • Amanda

Our first dance song was “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon & Garfunkel. We’ve always loved S&G.My dad had passed away 2 weeks before our wedding so it was very meaningful for us. Solidifying not only our relationship that day but the song reminded us that we’re committing to be there for each other like we had been through the hard life stuff before getting married. The DJ baulked at how long it was but I didn’t care – it was perfect for us.

  • KISig

We kicked off our dance party with Do You Love Me (Now That I Can Dance) by The Contours, but our first slow song was My Girl by The Temptations (we’re both ladies and this has been “our song” forever). At Last was our last song, preceded by Missy Elliott’s Work It and Beyonce’s Crazy In Love, which was an amazing way to end the party!

  • Brielle Arnold

We’ll be dancing to Band of Horses’ cover of George Harrison’s “Your Love is Forever.”

  • guest

We are doing “Someone Like You” by Van Morrison…getting married in 2 days! One of my favorite parts of the song is at the end “the best is yet to come”….

We also considered Can’t Help Falling in Love (either Elvis or Ingrid Michaelson), Ho Hey by The Lumineers, and You Are The Best Thing by Ray LaMontagne

  • Kat91314

We’re not technically doing an announced first dance, but somewhere in the evening we will be on the dance floor, and “Syrup and Honey” by Duffy will be playing. I fall for her voice EVERY damn time……

  • Sara

“Safe and Sound” by Capital Cities!

    • dearabbyp

I think we are using this as our recessional!!

      ETA: one month from TODAY!

  • Chelsea

“Mellow Mood” by Bob Marley although we almost went with “Harvest Moon” by Neil Young

    • CJ

      “Harvest Moon” is our choice.

I am marrying Mr. Moon. His favorite artist is Neil Young. It’s a romantic song. Done!

  • Becky

We danced to Michael Buble’s version of “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.” We are huge Toy Story fans, and are friends first (unbeknownst to us, our priest’s sermon was actually on the importance of friendship in marriage, so it worked together beautifully). Anyway, it was such a fun song, a good combination of familiar and unexpected.

  • Sull

“Bright Tonight,” by Garbage. It spoke to the struggles and naysaying we dealt with as a lesbian couple as well as the long distance relationship we lived for five years and yet still carried happiness and joy in it.

  • Jessica

We are doing Shelter by Ray LaMontagne–in less than 2 months!

  • Meredith

    Wonderful by My Morning Jacket.

  • Ours was “The Wedding Song” by Paul Stookey, sung by my father and accompanied on guitar by my uncle. My dad had played it on guitar and sang it a lot when I was growing up, so it had special meaning to me to have him sing it at my wedding.

  • mere…

I haven’t seen anyone mention our first dance song yet – “You” by The Pretty Reckless. First time I heard the song I KNEW it would be our wedding song and fell completely in love with it.

  • Lou

Charles Bradley – Lovin’ You, Baby. It KILLS me. It’s so emotional and gorgeous, and we both just love the idea of dancing to a song that isn’t popular (not that we’re snobby about it, but there’s something special about it).

  • Amanda

My husband and I are big music buffs so we were in the middle of an endless debate about what our first dance song should be when we were passing through Knoxville, TN en-route to a wedding in the mountains of North Carolina. Something about that night in Knoxville made it one of the most magical of our whole relationship …and as it was coming to an end and we were wandering back through the front doors of the hotel and up to our room an instrumental version of Moon River was playing. It’s one of my favorite songs and I was so happy to be hearing it right at that moment but oddly enough my husband didn’t think he had ever heard it before. As soon as we got back to the room I played it for him…and then over and over and over again as we danced in circles overlooking the city. I like to think the song picked us.

“….Two drifters, off to see the world, there’s such a lot of world to see
We’re after the same rainbow’s end, waiting round the bend…”

    • Erin

      That’s so romantic!

  • Gayle

The Best Is Yet To Come, Frank Sinatra
(the 1964 recording with accompaniment from Count Basie under the direction of Quincy Jones)

  • Jackie O

“Got to Give it Up” by Marvin Gaye

  • Lindsay

Let’s Go Crazy by Prince. Because we’re from Minnesota and grew up in the 80s. Because we were hoping people would want to join us on the dance floor rather than watching us. And it worked like a charm.

  • KHaleigh

We’re dancing to “How Long Will I Love You” by Jon Boden, Sam Sweeney & Ben Coleman.
Other favorite song choice is my processional song, which is “Edelweiss” as sung by the father & daughter in Sound of Music :)

  • macaroni

We’re doing “Your Love Keeps Lifting Me (Higher and Higher).” Our “song” is “Higher Love” by Steve Winwood, but it’s SUPER long and kind of hard to dance to?

  • rachel

I hope we dance to “Your Guardian Angel” by red jumpsuit apparatus. love the lyrics and song!!!

  • Ali

Friday I’m in Love – The Cure

  • weedingcane

We’re doing a first song together ‘Be My Husband’ by Nina Simone, it’s lyrics are the utter basics of a man and a woman together including all things that can go wrong. Then first dance we’re having ‘Stir It Up’ by Bob Marley and the Wailers, first time he took out his bass guitar and played the opening bars I fell in love.

  • academical9

Come Fly With Me, Frank Sinatra. It’s really upbeat and fun to dance to, and since we’ve collectively lived on 3 different continents in the last 4 years, with the promise of many moves to come, it seemed appropriate.

  • Megan

My handsome fella and I chose “Unforgettable” by Nat King Cole. It leans a little classic, but we both love jazz and felt that this was not a difficult song in terms of dancing. Hopefully we can pull off this foxtrot!

    • macrain

I’m doing that one with my dad! Love it.

      • Lily

Me too (well, did). He didn’t know what the song was going to be and it’s one of his favorites. We didn’t have a videographer, but my best friend sneakily caught it on video on my phone. When I discovered it a few days after the wedding, I cried like a baby.

  • We did “Better Together” by Jack Johnson. We had a really hard time picking, then I heard it on the radio one day and it just made me so happy, so I knew we had to do it. It really summed up our fun, companionable relationship.

  • La’Marisa-Andrea

“Spend My Life With You” – Eric Benet and Tamia.

  • BigChiefNugget

“Our House” by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young – been our song since he first put in on a mix CD the first week we met

  • Mooza

Hopefully, to be used someday soon: “Is This Love” by Bob Marley. We were at a tribute concert and it came on and I was like: “hey, this would be a cool song for a… thing” and he looked at me all googly eyed, and since then every time we hear it we googly eye each other. We do love ganja though.

  • Treasure Stirling

“All For Love” – Rod Stewart/Sting/Bryan Adams – from 1993’s Disney’s The Three Musketeers
Because I originally wanted “Fields of Gold” – Sting, but He wasn’t sold – so we kept the discussion open, overheard it being played somewhere and went “we could do that” went home, listened; and listened again, and found lists of suggestions and listened to those, and then to “All for Love” again …. and then when we had narrowed it down to it and 2 other songs, I started just choking up, and he said “Ok, that’s the one….”

  • Christina

“Stand by Me” as covered by John Lennon–though we may have to practice to find out if it’s actually dance-able!

  • Elisabeth Risch

“I Want You to Be My Love” by Over the Rhine.

  • lindsayE

We are deciding between “I Found You” by the Alabama Shakes and Ingrid Michaelson’s cover of “Can’t help Falling in Love”.

  • Celeste B.

We wanted an R&B vocal so we chose “The Point of it All” by Anthony Hamilton

  • Blakers

“Right Down the Line” by Gerry Rafferty

    • ART

      ugh I LOVE THAT SONG!

  • Margaret Cruz

“All the Way” by Frank Sinatra. Our dance was choreographed to our favorite Rat pack member, who we discussed on our first date! <3

  • chirpygirl

Ours was Bruce Springsteen’s “If I Should Fall Behind” – we were dancing to it in my kitchen when the idea of possibly maybe someday considering getting married entered the conversation for the first time. We call it our “love song for grown-ups” : )

    • Amanda

What a beautiful picture! And I LOVE the song choice!

  • Laura

We used “Everybody Needs Somebody To Love” from the Blues Brothers soundtrack. It is my husband’s favorite movie, and we loved it! I actually danced so hard during this song that I broke my bustle!

  • cschaffner

We didn’t want our first dance to be slow because I knew I would get emotional, so we chose Eva Cassidy’s version of “Cheek to Cheek” and choreographed a simple swing dance to it to keep things lighthearted. It was SO much fun!!

  • Jess

“Into the Mystic” by Van Morrison

  • Louise

“Hold you in my arms” by Ray La Montagne. I still love it.

  • JSwen

“Hysteric” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It was very sweet and surprisingly appropriate to hear Karen O sing, “these strange steps,” as we were trying our damnedest to do a proper sway foxtrot. :)

  • Kirstin

“Oh” by Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds. We specifically used the live version from Live from Las Vegas. Sweet, simple song that isn’t too long.

  • deepbluedream

“Stay Young, Go Dancing” by Death Cab for Cutie :)

  • Alley

“When It’s Time” by Green Day

  • Mezza

“You Get Me” by Michelle Branch, which has been our song since we were a couple of nerdy high school best friends back when Michelle Branch was a thing. We hadn’t heard it in a while and it was really fun to listen to the lyrics during the dance (and it distracted me from being the center of attention).

  • Ashley

“You Belong To Me” by Bob Dylan from Natural Born Killers.

    • Lily

The Carla Bruni cover of this song is also amazing.

  • Nicole B.

“Little Trip to Heaven (On the Wings of Your Love)”, by Tom Waits, off the Closing Time EP. Mellow, sweet, and perfect for our October night.

  • Stacey H.

“Fly Me to the Moon” by Mr. Frank Sinatra himself (or maybe Julie London). We’ve been fairly non-traditional throughout this whole process and my FH wanted something a little more traditional. We’re even going to dance lessons to learn how to foxtrot!! (Also his idea!!) Now all I need are some killer dancing shoes…

  • Marta

Tupelo Honey by van morrison. it worked for us, since my hubby is obsessed with honey; it was in our favors and we toasted with mead rather than champagne. i was happy to have a unique but not too indie song. we used a shorter version than the 7 minutes though.

  • JKE

First Dance- Let There be Love by Nat King Cole
Me walking down the aisle- A Case of You by Joni Micthell
Processional- Best of My Love by The Emotions

  • Natalie

At the top of our list right now is Then by Brad Paisley. I love country music.

  • Stephanie G.

“La vie en rose.” A 90-second version sun in English and played on the ukulele by Cristin Milioti. She just recorded it this year for a episode of how I met your mother, and it is simple, beautiful, and gorgeous. And being so short, it was super easy to choreograph some basic partnering steps and not feel as if we were on the dance floor indefinitely!

  • Sarah

“The Man in Me” by Bob Dylan

  • Kelly

Can’t Take My Eyes Off You-Franki Valli

  • Lizzy

“You & Me” by Dave Matthews…I am a huge fan of DMB and the fiance (now husband) hated them when we first met. It was actually the source of our first real fight (weird?!). But over the years he grew to like them too and included the song in his proposal. I loved every second of our dance!!

  • Chris

We’re going with “First Day Of My Life” by Bright Eyes. We initially wanted to do “The Shape Of Things To Come” from BSG, but couldn’t manage to go fast enough for it, so it’s the recessional instead (nice bookend to the processional, which is “Roslin And Adama,” also from BSG).

    • Carin

We’re planning to do First Day of My Life also! I discovered the song shortly before my now fiancée and I started dating and it’s been so perfect for our entire relationship. It feels a little fast for a first dance, but I’m hoping we can make it work. I love BSG and I’m definitely going to look up the two you mention!

  • Anna Stern

This question reminded me of one of my favorite moments in our wedding. We have “a song,” as you do, but had both convinced ourselves this song was somehow “inappropriate” for a wedding. We halfheartedly chose a replacement…(I think it was Mushaboom by Feist–for the record it was 2010). After dinner and toasts, we had the tables cleared away for dancing, but people seemed content with their wine and chatting and we weren’t sure if the transition to dancing was going to happen. Then my husband came up to me and said “do you want to dance to our song?” And I said “yeah!” and he was like “I mean our o.g. song?” And I said “YEAH!” And so we danced to the song we wanted all along, “You Were Always on My Mind” as covered by the Pet Shop Boys. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q053PBA47gY Thanks for the space to remember that story!

  • Bree B.

We picked “Stay With You” by John Legend. Sweet, slow, and happy and we hadn’t heard it at a wedding yet – which was exactly what we wanted.

  • Ariana

“One & Only” by Adele. Whenever I hear it now, it brings me right back to that moment.

  • klk55

My husband and I are not good dancers nor do we like ALL EYES FOCUSED ON US for an awkward dance. We picked a LOVELY song and it was almost 2 min long. “I Will” by the Beatles. Btw – my husband, having been served several drinks and no food, changed after our ceremony and put his boutineer on backwards so the pin pointed out. When we were dancing, it stabbed me in the face and blood just started pouring down my cheek. He was wiping it off and everyone just thought I was crying. ha ha

  • Danielle

Ours definitely wasn’t classic (that I know of). “Falling in Love at a Coffeeshop” by Landon Pigg. It was very us.

  • Amanda Jean Castleberry

“Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran. The fiance love him and it speaks perfectly to how I see us and our future together.

  • Amanda Jean Castleberry

“Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran.

  • Normajean

Townes Van Zandt’s “Ain’t Leavin’ Your Love” is going to be ours. Not sure how much actual dancing there will be!

  • “Free” by Zac Brown… we knew we were moving into a van in 3 months…and no one else did. It was perfect for us!

  • Myranda

Jump, Jive, and Wail. :-) It was the first song we danced together to, way back in middle school jazz club.

  • Erica

Moon River – my friends sang and played guitar, like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubeFZwCR2lM. It was insanely magical.

  • Stacie

We used Earth Wind & Fire’s “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy”, which we choreographed two days before the wedding in our living room, because once a theatre major, always a theatre major.

  • Robyn

The Luckiest by Ben Folds. We did a cheesy little choreographed dance and people loved it!

  • Rachel

“Your House” by Jonatha Brook. We also ended the night with a totally impromptu air guitar/drum duet to “Let’s Go Crazy” by Prince. I loved both songs and experiences equally.

  • Manda

Gone, Gone, Gone by Phillip Phillips. I had a couple other songs in mind but I knew we should use this one when my FH showed me the video and told me it made him think of me. He’s not usually the romantic type.

  • rel_redhead

We’re using “Baba O’Riley” (aka Teenage Wasteland) by The Who. Not exactly a classic love song, but it’s meaningful to us within the context of our relationship. I hope people will find it fun and not just totally odd.

  • Kelsey

The day of our wedding, our recessional song didn’t end up being played (our guitarist didn’t know that there would be such a short period of time between playing a song in the middle, and the recessional, and unexpectedly didn’t have enough time to re-tune). So, instead of dancing to the song we planned, we danced to Not With Haste by Mumford and Sons. Its a beautiful song, and reminds me a lot of my husband, and actually what I had wanted to dance to originally.

  • lshaf

My husband and I both loved Phantom of the Opera before we even met and went to see it together on one of our first dates. Soon after we got engaged we took a trip to London and decided to catch another performance of it. As soon as “All I Ask of You” started to play, we both knew that this was the perfect song for us. Although we did edit out of the part with the Phantom.

  • Larla

Our first dance song is Cruisin’ by Smokey Robinson. Its our song and perfect for us.

  • elysiarenee

We had Dance me to the End of Love by Leonard Cohen , which based on the titled sounds inapropriate but is actually about journeying through the whole long life of loving one another and is very moving I think.

  • Shauna

We’re dancing to Peter Gabriel’s version of “Book of Love”, but Airborne Toxic Event’s version was a close runner up.
Also in the running: Storybook Love- Mark Knopfler, First Day of My life- Bright Eyes.
I’ve decided to walk down the aisle to “first day of my life”, and use “storybook love” for the honoured guests processional. Or vice versa… It is crunch time. Wedding is in 4 days… Time to make a decision!

  • Tiff

“Lose Yourself to Dance (feat. Pharrell Williams)” by Daft Punk

I was sooooo not into the idea of doing a first dance (I love to get my groove on but the idea of dancing in the center of a room where there was a high potential to faceplant in front of all my friends and family was nerve-wracking!) so I tried to avoid the subject and let my boo handle it all. After suggesting several other songs that I nixed, hoping he would give me a free pass on the first dance thang, he played this song and I loved it. All my friends know me as a huge Daft Punk fan (and I do have a medium-sized crush on Pharrell) and because “Robot Rock” isn’t exactly the easiest tune to waltz to, I loved his choice because it still has a Daft Punk vibe with Pharrell’s romantic sensuality that it made it perfect for the occasion. We even took dance lessons and borrowed a few steps from this video: http://youtu.be/Z11Y_Vlyvmo. :-)

  • Ellie

“Gold” by interference from the movie once. when we first started dating, we would lay out at night and watch the stars. he would teach me about the constellations and we would listen to this song among other things.

  • Julz

    “Better Together” by Jack Johnson

  • Jess

we chose “All of Me” by John Legend. I melt every time I hear it!

  • julianneclamcake

“Lady Love Me” By The Watson Twins. We weren’t even going to do a first dance, but I think now, yes. Less about the dancing and more about the being close listening to a meaningful song in front of a lot of people? That seemed less weird in my head.

  • Rygar Renz

Many suggestions in a list. But personally, I’d go for You’re the Best Thing That Ever Happened. Style Council, I think.

  • It isn’t official yet, but in my head it is because when I heard “Be My Baby” by The Ronettes again for the first time after being engaged I just *knew.* I got legitimate chills. We’re both huge Beatles fans and we met at Beatles Karaoke so doing a Beatles song would be too obvious (plus, how do you pick a favorite child?). But this is that perfect 1960s song. And it’s not too gender-specific (where I’d feel like it was just about me saying how great he is or vice versa). Every time I hear it now I smile like an idiot. And we had a conversation about first dance songs recently and both agree this is our top contender unless something else really wows us before the date.

  • Phineas Crumpy

There are so many songs that can fill in for a first dance.
