One sentence sum-up of the wedding vibe: A fun family celebration including a graffiti wall guestbook, a kick-ass donut and cookie chandelier, and a special groomsmen performance of “D!ck in a Box.”

Other Cool Stuff We Should Know About

The wedding was held at the Juan’s aunt’s beautiful home in Gilbert, Arizona. The bridesmaids were asked to choose their own floor length gowns. They ranged from H&M, BHLDN and Windsor Fashions. Our groomsmen helped us build our graffiti wall guestbook, and another groomsman designed our K+J graffiti logo on it. Another groomsman made a special Caribbean drink called Sorrel, a throwback to when he invited us to New York with him and had Caribbean food in Brooklyn and where we got engaged. Bouquets and boutonnières made by my Aunt Sherry, which turned out so amazing. Juan’s cousin Brandon performed our wedding music as well as our First Dance song, “Stay With You” by John Legend.

We are major fans of the TV show Friends, hence the “He’s Her Lobster” cake topper. My brother Chris officiated the wedding ceremony, and surprised us with a “Unity Donut” (groom’s FAVORITE dessert) in lieu of a unity candle. Juan gave all his groomsmen all Arizona Cardinals socks as a gift, and wrapped them up “D!ick in a Box” style, with a hole in the box. Hence the hilarious “D!ick in a Box” surprise performance from the groomsmen.

We did a Soul Train style grand intro for reception and chose individual songs for each bridal party member and shared fun facts about each person. We surprised our guests with late-night pizza. The dessert table was lovingly designed by my best friend/bridesmaid who created the wood branch chandelier all by herself and hung donuts and cookies off of it. We ended our night with a sky lantern release, accompanied by our final song of the night, “Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson. Our two year old son LJ was the Best Man.

Favorite Thing About The Wedding

Every aspect of our wedding (setup, decor, coordinating, etc.) included help from a family member or good friend, which made it a million times more special. Our loved ones were so invested in making our day unique and flawless. The list is endless. We truly felt the love in all the weeks leading up to our wedding. Oh and our sky lantern release accompanied by “Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson at the end of the night? Magical.

As a donut lover my dream wedding cake was essentially a croquembouche but out of donut holes. Logitically we weren’t able to make it happen so we baked a few hundred homemade cookies instead.

      (You forgot dicks in boxes.)

Srsly, tho. LOVED these pictures… “At homes” make my heart sing, and these guys have suuuuch beautiful pictures… Further, I’ve NEVER seen a bunch of dudes dive so hard for the garter!

How the hell did I forget the dicks in boxes? I’m firing myself…

The “at homes” just have such a earnest joy to them. When I was 12 my grandma married her husband in her backyard and I always wanted an at home wedding after that. It wasn’t in the cards for us because my in-laws wouldn’t have allowed booze at their house, and getting married in my home town would’ve meant a lot of things that I wasn’t emotionally prepared to deal with.

  • As an AZ girl, let me just say, a Carolina’s-catered wedding sounds amazing!

These pictures make me so happy. I love the donuts, the lanterns, the band, the joy on everyone’s faces. I actually laughed out loud when I got to the d*ck-in-a-box photo. Everyone seems to be having so much fun! Beautiful.

I always love seeing wedding photos with the kids right up there as part of the ceremony! And that chandelier of cookies and doughnuts is fantastic.

  • e_elizabeth

I feel that every bit of wedding planning advice has failed me, because there were no mentions of a tree branch chandelier with cascading donuts and cookies. It looks like this wedding was an amazing celebration of love and happiness by all involved.
