The Best Wedding Songs 2018

Bey, stay (forever)

It’s somehow that time of year again, when we round up the best wedding songs 2018. These songs didn’t come out in 2018 of course, since sadly I cannot read the future. (Bey, what magical album will you drop this year?) But we have done a deep dive into the most popular wedding songs of recent years, with special attention to stuff that came out over the last twelve months. Some of these wedding songs we’ve heard on a million wedding dance floors already. Some of them we want to hear at every wedding we go to this year.

Can Bey’s “Die with You” be the new popular first dance song? Please?

This couldn’t come at a better time since I’m currently trying to figure out music!

Same! About to finalize list of songs to send to DJ… which at this point the list is mostly borrowed from a friend whose wedding was last year. I’ll add a few of these songs to bring it into 2018!

    • Zoya

From very recent experience, you can’t go wrong with the classics—lots of Motown, ‘80s anthems, etc. We thought our guests would roll their eyes at stuff like “Shout,” but people came RUNNING to the dance floor.

In our group, AC/DC, Def Leppard, Journey, etc. win every time. Air guitars rule.

Journey! “Don’t Stop Believing” was our big final song of the night, it was great. The DJ got everybody into a big circle around us and we were just all belting out the lyrics.

I do not think you can go wrong with this song.

      • sofar

Yeah, I’ve been to a few weddingw where the couple has clearly lovingly curated their “I’m so cool and anti-mainstream” hipster playlist. Floor is empty until the DJ finally gives up and plays “Shout” or “YMCA.”

This was the first song played after midnight at a NYE wedding we went to and let me tell ya noisemakers lend themselves WELL to this song!

    Uh oh I’m old.

    • suchbrightlights

Me too apparently, shall we rock on our porches and talk about kids these days?

    • Kara Davies

I’ve never heard of any of these. I’m old!

    • Meg Keene

Well, I mean, they are all very new songs, that is the whole point ;)

  • Amy March

    Ugh Havana is the worsttttttt

    • sofar

I’m in the social/ballroom dancing world and that song is currently the pop-song-you-can-dance-cha-cha-to dujour (a spot long dominated by the Rob Thomas and Santana hit “Smooth.”)

I change the station whenever it comes on the radio, but, when I’m at a dance thing, I’m like, “Aw hell yeah, let’s dance!”

    • Meg Keene

Obviously that’s Maddie’s current favorite song!

  • I generally think that ’87 or ’97 go’s down better at weddings than 2017, but here are some of my favorite dance-y songs from last year (a few aren’t like, 100% weddingish content wise, but also “Hey Ya!” is a modern wedding classic, so) :

    Water Me – Lizzo
Woman (Clean? I assume there’s a clean version?) – Kesha
    New Rules – Dua Lipa
    Nights With You – MØ
    Hard Times – Paramore
    LMK – Kelela
Shape of You – Ed Sheeran
    Oo La La – Ditto
I’m Better (feat Lamb) – Missy Elliot
To The Moon And Back – Fever Ray (explicit)

    • Zoya

      Yessss to Lizzo!

  • Antonia

Oh geez, I’m sorry, but “Say You Won’t Let Go” is so, so awful. It will no doubt get PLENTY of play at weddings, and I’m not arguing its inclusion in this list, but dear God…

“We danced the night away, we drank too much
I held your hair back when
    You were throwing up”

    “I wanna live with you
    Even when we’re ghosts
‘Cause you were always there for me when I needed you most”

    No. Just, NO.

I think I have different taste from the group who came up with this list so in terms of releases from last year, let me throw out Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, “Love and Great Buildings”. A love song to New York and relationships. Knew it would be on our wedding soundtrack after hearing 30 seconds of it.

“Love and great buildings will survive
Strong hearts and concrete stay alive
Through the great depressions, yeah the best things are designed to stand the test of time.”

    • Angela

Thank you for this, it’s lovely.

  • Hannah Rishel

While it’s a beautiful song I don’t think anyone should be playing “you’re going to live forever in me” by John Mayer at their wedding. The last verse goes:

“And when the pastor asks the pews
For reasons he can’t marry you
I’ll keep my word and my seat
But you’re gonna live forever in me”

Christian Hudson – Four Leaf Clover!!
