85 Marriage Quotes Perfect for Your Wedding

Because we know you’ve been looking for the right words

Letter board saying "wedding and marriage quotes"

Holy moly, marriage quotes can be a pain. Real talk: when Michael and I were putting together our wedding ceremony, we really struggled to find marriage quotes that we didn’t—what’s the word—hate. We were in a bit of a double bind. We wanted the written portions to feel deep and meaningful and to reflect our views on marriage, but we also wanted them to feel like us. And the problem was so many of the marriage quotes we were finding at the time felt saccharine. And insincere. And just plain bad. (Sorry, but my love is not like an ocean.) So he and I spent hours and hours searching all the wedding quotes that existed on the Internet, and then cried a little because endless googling makes your brain go fuzzy and deargodthesewereawful.

So, we wanted better for you. Maybe you could skip the crying part and go right to the part where you go, “OMG THAT IS PERFECT FOR US.” So today we’ve rounded up eighty-five of our favorite marriage quotes for you right here. (And if you’re planning a Christian or Jewish wedding, you should check out our best Bible verses for weddings as well.) We’ve broken these marriage quotes up by length (with some bonus pop-culture quotes thrown in for good measure), because while longer quotes are great for a wedding ceremony, shorter wedding quotes actually make for really great decor items.

Some of my favorite ways to include marriage quotes in your decor are right here:

  3. Shall we make a new rule of life from tonight: always try to be a little kinder than is necessary? J.M. Barrie

  5. Laughter is holier than piety, freedom is sweeter than fame, and in the end it’s love and love alone that really matters. Tom Robbins
  6. When it’s over, I want to say: all my life I was a bride married to amazement. I was the bridegroom, taking the world in my arms. Mary Oliver
  7. Love does not consist of gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction. Antoine de Saint-Exupery
  8. And once the storm is over you won’t remember how you made it through… You won’t be the same person who walked in. That’s what this storm’s all about. Haruki Murakami

Marriage quotes to use in your ceremony

  1. For her I changed pebbles into diamonds, shoes into mirrors, I changed glass into water, I gave her wings and pulled birds from her ears and in her pockets she found feathers, I asked a pear to become a pineapple, a pineapple to become a lightbulb, a lightbulb to become the moon, and the moon to become a coin I flipped for her love. Nicole Krauss
  2. They loved each other, not driven by necessity, by the “blaze of passion” often falsely
ascribed to love. They loved each other because everything around them willed it, the trees and the clouds and the sky over their heads and the earth under their feet. Perhaps their surrounding world, the strangers they met in the street, the wide expanses they saw in their walks, the rooms in which they lived or met, took more delight in their love than they themselves did. Boris Pasternak, Doctor Zhivago
  3. Love is the ultimate outlaw. It just won’t adhere to any rules. The most any of us can do is to sign on as its accomplice. Instead of vowing to honor and obey, maybe we should swear to aid and abet. That would mean that security is out of the question. The words “make” and “stay” become inappropriate. My love for you has no strings attached. I love you for free. Tom Robbins, Still Life with Woodpecker
  4. When two people meet and fall in love, there’s a sudden rush of magic. Magic is just naturally present then. We tend to feed on that gratuitous magic without striving to make any more. One day we wake up and find that the magic is gone. We hustle to get it back, but by then it’s usually too late, we’ve used it up. What we have to do is work like hell at making additional magic right from the start. It’s hard work, but if we can remember to do it, we greatly improve our chances of making love stay. Tom Robbins
  5. Love is fed by the imagination, by which we become wiser than we know, better than we feel, nobler than we are: by which we can see life as a whole, by which and by which alone we can understand others in their real and their ideal relation. Only what is fine, and finely conceived can feed love. But anything will feed hate. Oscar Wilde
  6. Because it is the nature of love to create, a marriage itself is something which has to be created, so that, together we become a new creature. To marry is the biggest risk in human relations that a person can take… If we commit ourselves to one person for life this is not, as many people think, a rejection of freedom; rather it demands the courage to move into all the risks of freedom, and the risk of love which is permanent; into that love which is not possession, but participation… It takes a lifetime to learn another person… When love is not possession, but participation, then it is part of that co-creation which is our human calling, and which implies such risk that it is often rejected. Madeleine L’Engle
  7. “Finnick!” Something between a shriek and a cry of joy. A lovely if somewhat bedraggled young woman—dark tangled hair, sea green eyes—runs toward us in nothing but a sheet. “Finnick!” And suddenly, it’s as if there’s no one in the world but these two, crashing through space to reach each other. They collide, enfold, lose their balance, and slam against a wall, where they stay. Clinging into one being. Indivisible. A pang of jealousy hits me. Not for either Finnick or Annie but for their certainty. No one seeing them could doubt their love. Suzanne CollinsMockingjay
  8. The sun shines not on us but in us. The rivers flow not past, but through us. Thrilling, tingling, vibrating every fiber and cell of the substance of our bodies, making them glide and sing. The trees wave and the flowers bloom in our bodies as well as our souls, and every bird song, wind song, and tremendous storm song of the rocks in the heart of the mountains is our song, our very own, and sings our love. John Muir, Mountain Thoughts
  9. We’re all a little weird. And life is a little weird. And when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall into mutually satisfying weirdness—and call it love—true love. Robert Fulghum, True Love

Love Quotes from movies

  1. “Look, in my opinion, the best thing you can do is find a person who loves you for exactly what you are. Good mood, bad mood, ugly, pretty, handsome, what have you. 3. “I don’t think you’re an idiot at all. I mean, there are elements of the ridiculous about you. Your mother’s pretty interesting. And you really are an appallingly bad public speaker. And, um… you tend to let whatever’s in your head come out of your mouth without much consideration of the consequences. I realize when I met you at the turkey curry buffet, that I was unforgivably rude, and wearing a reindeer jumper that my mother had given me the day before. But the thing is, um… what I’m trying to say, very inarticulately, is that, um… in fact, perhaps despite appearances, I like you, very much.” —Diary of Bridget Jones

We aren’t here to make things perfect. The snowflakes are perfect. The stars are perfect. Not us. Not us! We are here to ruin ourselves and to break our hearts and love the wrong people and die. The storybooks are bullshit. Now I want you to come upstairs and get in my bed.” —Moonstruck
  5. “I love that you get cold when it’s seventy-one degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it’s not because I’m lonely, and it’s not because it’s New Year’s Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.” —When Harry Met Sally

Unprompted, this is one of the quotes our MC used at our wedding (first in Klingon, then in English). “Love. You can learn all the math in the ‘Verse, but you take a boat in the air that you don’t love, she’ll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps her in the air when she oughta fall down, tells you she’s hurtin’ ‘fore she keens. Makes her a home.” (from the movie Serenity)

Over our gallery wall of family and bridal party wedding portraits (we hunted down 38 of them!) we are planning on a gold glittery sign that says ‘You Think This Happens Every Day?’- which is a on the DL princess bride quote- and I’m really looking forward to hanging it!

    • Her Lindsayship

      I love this idea!!

    • penguin

I love the subtle references to things – I’m walking down the aisle to “Concerning Hobbits” from the Lord of the Rings soundtrack. Some people might recognize it, but it’s a bit subtle.

      • EF

aw penguin! we did that too!

and left to the music from UP…which lots of people recognised. nary a dry eye…

        • penguin

UP? Oh derp, the movie Up? I was reading it as letters at first, like LotR for Lord of the Rings.

      • Sarah Jane

I walked down the aisle to “The Wedding of River Song” form the Doctor Who soundtrack – nobody recognized it except my husband, but it made the moment even more special for us

On the DL my sweet aunt Sally- I got that right away. I love that movie. <3 And I love that sign idea.

Aren’t there 84 quotes in the list, not 85?

Regardless, I love these! I’d also love to see a list of quotes or phrases short enough to make good wedding band engravings. We spent what felt like forever looking at options, and finally pulled a line from a ketubah text (not ours) that we might use: May we be better in being together.

    • Scalliwag

I’m a big fan too! I used to “collect” quotes, and seeing this list made me smile.

We used a portion of the Kurt Vonnegut quote listed above as our wedding band engraving, split between the two of us. I have “If this isn’t nice…” and my husband has “…I don’t know what is,” We say it to each other somewhat regularly and a poster with the quote is a main feature in our bedroom. So some of those, or portions of them could definitely be helpful!

  • We used this Edward Abbey quote as our benediction, “May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds. May your rivers flow without end, meandering through pastoral valleys tinkling with bells, past temples and castles and poets’ towers into a dark primeval forest where tigers belch and monkeys howl, through miasmal and mysterious swamps and down into a desert of red rock, blue mesas, domes and pinnacles and grottos of endless stone, and down again into a deep vast ancient unknown chasm where bars of sunlight blaze on profiled cliffs, where deer walk across the white sand beaches, where storms come and go as lightning clangs upon the high crags, where something strange and more beautiful and more full of wonder than your deepest dreams waits for you — beyond that next turning of the canyon walls.”

    • ssha

      Love this!

      Holy smokes, this is good.

Oooh, we made resin signs for our wedding from that tutorial, and I can’t remember if I ever shared pictures or not. We used two of them to sneak in minor geek references (one from Princess Bride, not actually all that subtle, and the other from Captain Marvel), and the only overtly political statement we made at our wedding. I can’t resist sharing some pictures–we were so pleased with how they turned out.

      OMGGGGGG.

In the future, for movie and TV quotes, can the writers be credited? While obviously movies and TV are collaborative media, the lines coming out of characters’ mouths were placed there by the writers. Usually (especially in the case of these types of films), words are not improvised.

That wonderful Parks & Rec quote might have come out of Leslie Knope’s mouth, but Alan Yang (incidentally the creator of Master of None) wrote the script for that episode.

The screenwriter of THE HUNGER GAMES deserves credit just as Susanne Collins does for writing the book. And Nora Ephron for WHEN HARRY MET SALLY… ! etc.

    • penguin

Considering that the quote from the Hunger Games was from the book, I don’t think the screenwriter for the movie based on that book needs to be credited for the quote.

For crediting the writes of movies/TV, they are collaborative – do you just put the main screenwriter? Or do you put down every writer? Personally I think it’s enough to just put what movie or TV show the quote is from, especially for a list like this.

      • edit – apparently I imagined a quote from Stardust. Aw well, both the book and movie have some good wedding quotes, which should be credited appropriately :)

      • rg223

Well, most movies and episodes of TV have one or two credited writers, so I think it’s reasonable to include those names. I found the crediting weird in general… like some of the quotes that were credited to writers were actually quotes from their books… I would argue for the consistency of always listing the author and work, if both exist.

Y’all forgot my favorite wedding quote of them all:
“We’re all a little weird. And life is a little weird. And when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall into mutually satisfying weirdness—and call it love—true love.”
    ― Robert Fulghum, True Love

What I kept saying to my brother the weekend of his wedding
(mostly the 5th sentence): “Your wedding day is about you and your bride. So who cares what anyone thinks? Love isn’t judgmental. Love is patient. Love is weird and sometimes gross. Love is elusive. And you found it. So treasure it.” – Liz Lemon

  • Thank you for collecting these! I’m always looking for love and marriage quotes, so I’ll be bookmarking for later.
