Sending save the dates felt like one of the first major items on our checklist. It made everything so, well, official! Save the dates signal that yes, this is really happening, and this is when it’s all going down. It’s exciting, but also a little nerve-wrecking. (I mean, isn’t that wedding planning in a nutshell?)
Getting to the point where my partner and I could cross “send save the dates” off our wedding to-do list was trickier than we anticipated. The process was more intensive than simply picking a day and telling everyone. It required self-reflection. We had to start thinking seriously about our guest list and to whom we’d ultimately send invitations.
But once we fine-tuned the guest list and decided on a mailing deadline, it was time for the fun part: designing our save the dates! My partner and I knew early on that we wanted to use Minted. They have a super extensive design selection, plus our general vibe is pretty minimalist—we aren’t into showy graphics, flowery fonts, or lots of color. (On a related note, people keep asking me what our wedding colors are, and I’m like, um, idk??) And while Minted does have those bases covered (and OMG their florals are so good), no one does minimalist stationery design better than they do.
If you’ve never created anything with Minted before, it’s remarkably simple. You can upload one photo and see it in all of their designs at the same time. And for a really low fee (usually $5 to $25), they will even do a printed design proof for you to make sure all your text is in the right place. Plus they’ve got actual human customer service if anything goes wrong (and I have it on good authority that the APW staff has put it to good use once or twice).
So we opted for Minted’s postcard format. At $1.35 (and with cheaper postage), they are way, way more cost-efficient, plus we figured that people throw out the envelopes anyway, so there’s no need for the extra expense. We also love to travel, and since our wedding will take place abroad, the postcards were the most natural fit personality-wise.
Of course, that’s what makes Minted so great and why we chose them in the first place. They truly offer a wide variety of save the date options for all personality types and style preferences. It was tough narrowing it down to just one. Fortunately for this article, I didn’t have to! I’ve rounded up some of our faves below. Can you guess which design won us over?
