Last year I had the pleasure of attending four weddings within a four month span. Yup, you read that right, a wedding a month. One in the Arizona desert, another at a Northern California winery, a backyard wedding in Lake Tahoe, and a small courthouse wedding. All in summer with totally different dress codes. I was on a mission to acquire allllll the summer wedding guest dresses, and fast.
Finding a Wedding Guest Dress
I had a few requirements when it came to my summer wedding guest dresses. The first being that I could dance in them and the second being that I would want to wear them again on another occasion. And since I had so many weddings to attend I used the opportunity to try out some new trends and also to try some high-quality pieces. The end result was me obtaining an embroidered floral dress from ASOS that I had been looking for an excuse to buy for months and a perfectly tailored-to-me jumpsuit that I will probably wear to every semi-formal event that I go to in the next couple of years.
And typically, most people fall into one of two categories on the wedding guest attire shopping spectrum: A) you pick one solid wedding guest dress that will carry you through wedding season (or every wedding for the next couple of years) or B) you have a new outfit for every wedding you go to (because why not?). And if you tend to fall into the latter category like me, go ahead and buy all the clothes you want in this round up, jumpsuits and suiting included!
Summer Wedding Guest Dresses and More
Embroidered Dress: Is this my favorite of all the summer wedding guest dresses? I think so. I have a real weak spot for embroidery and might just have to add this one to my collection.
Pleated Midi Dress: This dress is perfect for a casual backyard wedding and also makes for a great addition to your Monday–Friday wardrobe. Add a pair of statement earrings and a leather jacket and you’re ready for a night on the town. What I’m saying here is OPTIONS.
Satin Jacket and Trousers: If you’re looking for something that isn’t a dress, this satin suit is sure to land you on the best dressed wedding guest list.
Picnic Dress: Traveling for a casual outdoor summer wedding? Everlane’s picnic dress is one of the best summer wedding guest dresses around because it’s wrinkle-free (yup, go ahead and toss it in your suitcase) and it’s lightweight and breathable.
Ingrid Dress: They say the 90s are making a comeback, right? We’re all about this fresh take on square necklines and floral prints for summer wedding guest dresses.
Bow Shift Dress: Yellow signifies happiness and positivity and what better way to celebrate the newlyweds than with a thoughtful gesture like that?
Pleated Mini Dress: The cut and color of this dress is perfect to last you many wedding seasons to come. And let’s be real, pleated dresses are always in style.
Sunburst Wrap Dress: Rust colored, flowy, with stripes and 70s vibes. Add this to my shopping cart please.
Yellow Jumpsuit: I mostly look for two things in jumpsuits (maybe three if you count pockets): lightweight and breathable. This one checks all the boxes, pockets included.
Mini Linen Dress: Perfect for a beach wedding, you’ll be sure to wear this mini dress over and over again. Bonus: it comes in almost two dozen colors so there’s a little something for everyone!
Draped Floral Dress: If your style tends to skew on the more maximalist side look no further. Floral, one shoulder and mixed prints, this design wraps all of this season’s current trends in one.
Gallery Row Jumpsuit: When your hip friends decide to get married in an art gallery this will be your go-to.
Off-the-Shoulder Mini Dress: Millennial pink is out and lilac is in. Just kidding, we still love millennial pink but lilac makes for a great new-neutral.
Trapeze Dress: Wedding guest appropriate and easy to work into a professional wardrobe, it’s all about versatility. Someone get this into my closet ASAP.
Polka Dot Suit: Polka dots on polka dots. Bold style for a bold wedding guest.
Printed Maxi Dress: I think of this dress as the grown up version of tie-dye, just better!
Floral Dress: If this isn’t the best/most forgiving dress to break it down on the dance floor in we don’t know what is.
Block Printed Jumpsuit: I’d be lying if I told you this hasn’t been sitting on my wishlist for weeks. And it comes in petite sizes!
Vintage Flower Dress: Sometimes all you need is a pop of pink for truly epic celebration style.
Gingham Suit: Zara is killing it in the suiting department this season. And if there’s any print that screams summer it’s most definitely gingham.
Red Tea Dress: OK, I might be biased. This one is Meg approved and I’ve seen her style it so many ways that it would be foolish not to add it to your wedding guest wardrobe!
Floral Midi Dress: It’s obvious at this point that florals are here to stay. But that Kelly Green? It’s the unexpected color that really makes this a standout among a sea of floral prints.
