Five Reasons You Want a Squarespace Wedding Website

Spoiler alert: Because it's the best

I thought I knew a lot about weddings from working in them, but there’s nothing like wedding season in my friends circle (and getting a job at APW) to hammer home how much I genuinely don’t know. Case in point: the arduous journey of making a wedding website. While I consider myself a tech-savvy human, it turns out (surprise) the average person doesn’t spend as long online as I do. Which means, when they want to get information to their guests and start making an Internet home where it can all live… things can get complicated.
Making a website can be overwhelming on a good day. And let’s be real, APW readers are a busy bunch, so ain’t nobody got time to make a wireframe mockup and teach yourself code (unless you were already planning on it). If you have a wedding website, it needs to be easy to use, easy to navigate, and easy on the eyes. Okay, the last one is my own requirement but c’mon, you want a platform to do justice to the badass photos of you and your partner because… you probably (shhh) want to show them off.
For all of these reasons: hooray for Squarespace. I’m totally biased, because I built my own site on Squarespace, but I also know first-hand how smooth the process is. With that in mind, here are my top five reasons why when it comes to wedding websites, I’m a Squarespace fan:

1.You Do You

Squarespace lets you customize your site until it’s so personalized you can tell it’s yours in a millisecond. Impressive header image? Yes, please. Start with a pre-fab template and play dress-up with your website by changing out fonts, backgrounds, image sizes, and literally almost any element you can click on. Wanna keep it simple? No problem. Stick to the defaults and just drop your images into the backend (see: How To Make a Photo-Focused Wedding Website) and voilà: a gallery like the one you see above.

2. COMPUTER NERDINESS NOT NEEDED

Anyone can make a basic Squarespace site. I mean it. I know people say “anyone could do it” about a lot of things that are actually really annoyingly difficult (read: poaching an egg), but this time it’s for real. If you’re confident or curious, there’s a lot of opportunity to customize, but you won’t need to know a single line of CSS or HTML5 or whatever they’re using these days. Look at the above screenshot of the style editor: all the customization options are drop down menus. Can you use gmail? Then you’re all set. (For the rest of you, here’s a full on breakdown of how easy it is to make pretty happen.)

3. Say Goodbye to Photoshop (or Illustrator)

You see all those exceptionally awesome wedding logos up there? Every single one of them was made using Squarespace’s in-house logo maker. The tool totally didn’t exist in the dark ages when I made my site, and frankly, I’m jealous. What would take me hours—and multiple programs—to make is now as simple as picking a graphic, a few words, and moving it around. Maddie even figured out some fancy hacks for all your DIY logo goals (like pasting in a heart emoji as text).

4. AN ADDRESS TO REMEMBER

You know what’s not fun? When you try to remember your friend’s wedding site URL and you’re all, “Is it maddieandmike.weddingtimez.com or was it maddieandmike.weddingbellz.net, or… forget it, I’ll just text her.” Seriously, my memory can’t handle that. But Squarespace has your back. Every time you buy a site, you get a free custom URL. So go ahead, name your wedding website after some inside joke, or better yet, your wedding hashtag. That’s a thing, right? #apwloveshashtags

5. Right here, right now

One of the biggest complaints I have when I search for stock photos is that half of the office images are obviously dated (’90s blowouts, no thank you). Ditto when it comes to the wedding site layout. That’s why Squarespace is such a revelation. Since they are constantly updating their templates, you can make a website that’s clean, modern, and a reflection of today’s aesthetic (or one from the past, if that’s how you’re leaning!). And the upside to a minimal design aesthetic? Even your grandparents will find all the links they need.
